I know the Ray Noble version with Bowlly is the pinnacle of this son but I actually like this one better. Great piano & strings.

I like this version too, but personally the Noble/Bowlly version is a favorite of mine! :D

Enjoying these Fred Hartley sides - knew him mainly for his accompaniments on Gracie Fields 78s but it’s nice to hear the band’s own discs. Thanks for sharing

I've always wanted to hear another version of this classic! Why doesn't there seem to be very many? I know there was one by Roy Fox and his band, but that's about it other than this new one you've just uploaded.

There are certainly several, but not many.
I think this song wasn't that much of a hit, because I can't seem to find it in any hit compilations or charts from the era. Maybe it was on someone's old 78s collection and that's the reason it ended up in The Shining?

@@LudiusQuassas It was in The Shining since it was a haunting tune, and it had a 1920s style to it.

It is a bit of a reach of a song to randomly have on a movie, especially since there is no evidence that it was a hit during its time and could've been largely forgotten by the general public.
It's also unmistakably a 1930s-styled song, as slow jazz pieces were extremely rare during the 1920s.

@@LudiusQuassas The arrangement was very 1920s like, and it had a haunting feel. I also presume the reason they used a 30s song was because it was easier to digitalize a 30s song because of electric recordings. 1920s songs did not sound very good, even with the invention of the electric recording in 1925.
