They weren't manipulated. As Piers Morgan stated, everyone was laughing at you and Amanda's quote "everybody was against you and we were all being cynical". That is the way the audience felt and there was no manipulation but pure judgement on everyone's part.
I've been on X Factor And I wouldn't call the performances "Staged" But they were definitely rehearse a preview to show the producers before meeting the judges in front of the crowd and if they thought you were entertaining in some fashion the put you on

Isn’t it sad how much people where judging her when she walked out on the stage INCLUDING Simon? But she shut them up real quick... the audience was super judgmental and she didn’t let them bother her. She’s an amazing woman and I love her.
Simon was not surprised - he auditioned her. Only the audience was surprised. Simon knew what he was bringing them - it's all part of television and it was very well done. The woman is phenomenal!

Henry & Clarice. Before she started singing, apart from Amanda, the other two were rolling their eyes. They thought Susan was a joke, same as every person who was watching. That includes you two and me. 2.26 minutes, simon realizes, he's made a mistake and she isn't even six bars into the song. 4.27 minutes, Simon sighs with disbelief and awe at what he was hearing. Although he never stood up at the end, that lady shocked him. She made him and Morgan look stupid......she booted the arse out of both of them.
They do have quite a lot of joke acts on BGT, so it might not have been all prejudice. It's not just her appearance. She has a funny, quirky voice and accent, and to hear that cultured, controlled voice come from her is shocking. To me, the song also fits much better with an older unmarried lady than a young girl. One of my favorite ever auditions.

The same thing happened during Jonathan Antoine's audition with Charlotte! They were all down on them because of Jonathan's appearance standing next to Charlotte, but when Jonathan opened his mouth, he blew the roof off the place and Simon had to scrape his chin off the floor!!
I'm here for the....what...100th time? It NEVER gets old. So many different aspects. Don't judge a book...The mouse that roared.......Never give up......And the performance! The crescendo is just incredible. And the judges reactions are just priceless. So many unknown talented people. It's one of the fantastic things about the internet. In spite of the gruesome trash out there, there are pearls to be found.

The reason she sounds so good, and shocked so many is because she has what most big name artists now have lost. She sings from the heart, it's not fake. People don't know how to handle that anymore, that sort of authenticity takes them off guard. Really a sad comment on our society more than anything.
That's ridiculous. The song probably meant something to her as an anonymous homely middle-aged incel (life has killed the dream I dreamed -- heartbreaking) but she sang it in cold blood. Her performance brings tears to my eyes but not to hers.

I thought about that, but really: the GB would have ruined the performance. As it was the audience was cheering her on, and while I'm sure it must have been awesome watching it live, the audience cheering the golden buzzer would have silenced what we did manage to hear.

Best audition ever, nowadays it’s more about looks than talent when it comes to singers. This time the talent was so good, they had to finally see past that.
"...But the tigers come at night...they tear your hopes apart..." The real power of the performance was in the irony of her own situation, even how she was (un)welcomed onto the stage.
She competed! Second place isn't bad, and it didn't matter anyway because she already had millions of fans (plus a recording contract) by the time the finals of BGT began. Of course she'd already sang for BGT's producers before appearing on the big stage in front of the judges. So while the judges may have been surprised by how amazing Susan sounded, the producers were ready for her to blow everyone away and they made sure she was signed to a contract before they put her on TV.

i kinda agree with you. artist like elton john, billie joe armstrong, celine dion, eminem, and even freddie mercury sang their hearts out. its not only the heart im after what i am also after is the story behind the song the messages the content that makes people say this song literaly breaks me in tears or a song that plays the emotions. nowadays i hear songs that rhyme for no reason no story no message no content no heart break feeling

I thought about that, but really: the GB would have ruined the performance. As it was the audience was cheering her on, and while I'm sure it must have been awesome watching it live, the audience cheering the golden buzzer would have silenced what we did manage to hear.

As she walked away after her performance, it only shows that she's not going to compete. She just want to perform.
She competed! Second place isn't bad, and it didn't matter anyway because she already had millions of fans (plus a recording contract) by the time the finals of BGT began. Of course she'd already sang for BGT's producers before appearing on the big stage in front of the judges.
So while the judges may have been surprised by how amazing Susan sounded, the producers were ready for her to blow everyone away and they made sure she was signed to a contract before they put her on TV.
