The Canal & River Trust is responsible for managing Edgbaston Reservoir, which was once known as Rotton Park Reservoir and as Rock Pool Reservoir on some early maps. It is a canal feeder reservoir located in Birmingham, England. It is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation and is located not far from Birmingham City Center.
Initially known as Roach Pool, this small pool in Rotton Park was greatly expanded between 1824 and 1829 by Thomas Telford to supply water to the Birmingham and Wolverhampton Levels of the Birmingham Canal Navigations (BCN) canal system. Water was delivered to the Wolverhampton Level via the Engine Arm and a culvert, while the lower Birmingham Level was reached through Icknield Port Loop at the base of the dam.
It was the largest body of water in Birmingham at the time, spanning 58 acres and dug to a depth of 40 feet. It contains 300 million imperial gallons of water. Small streams and a feeder from Oldbury's Titford Reservoir (Titford Pools) provide its water. A little creek was dammed to create it. The dam is an earth embankment that stretches 1,080-feet (330 m) and rises 33 feet (10 m) at its center.
Thomas Telford designed both the reservoir and the gatehouse, the latter of which is a two-story listed structure in the corporate BCN octagonal style with an 1880 addition. Charles Blondin crossed the reservoir while walking a tightrope in 1873. A 1992 monument honoring him is on the Ladywood Middleway ring road in the vicinity.
