A great drummer and a genius. Nice atmosphere and respect between the two. The precision and definition of Buddy plus his showmanship is incredible. Eddie's technique is impeccable and also a joy to watch.
I love how open these great drummers have their kits tuned. Ed's toms are big and open vs Buddy's whose toms are tighter but Buddy's kick drum is huge sounding in this clip. Sadly these great drummers are no longer among us. So glad that we have these clips of their great talent that allow them to still inspire young drummers even now.
Yeow!!! That was some strong drumming. I remember a Tonight Show episode where Johnny asked Buddy who he thought were the top 5 drummers. He said, "Your man Ed Shaugnessy would be one of them". You had to have some serious chops to get that kind of recognition from Buddy. Without a doubt, both of these guys can turn up the heat when you cut them loose.
Arguably, Eddie's greatest and most fulfilling moment in public. If you read his obit, he was very proud to finally "battle" Buddy and let's face it, he did good. It was very important to him, for sure.
When you consider that Shaughnessy was playing WITH a band with very few chances to solo every night and Rich was leading a band and soloing constantly Ed did a FANTASTIC job keeping up with Buddy. That's like standing in the ring with Tyson in his prime, going twelve rounds and leaving without a cut. And all of both ears! Ed should have been proud of that.
Yeah Ed said it was the performance of his lifetime and mentioned it numerous times as one of his best achievements and best moments in his life. If I gave that performance against Buddy I'd also think that!!

You can call this a draw or you can give the "decision" to Buddy but in no way did he Leave Ed in the dust as he had so many before him. Buddy really had to work to get this one and thats probably the biggest compliment HE could've paid to Ed.

When you watch Buddy Rich drum it looks like the video is set on fast forward. Many times it looks like the video is playing in both normal and fast forward; he's so perfectly fluid & smooth. I had the great good fortune to see him and sit center front, in a folding chair, just a few feet from him! He was AWESOME!!! I took my "Big Band" Dad to see his hero and when we left, he was my hero too!
You know to watch the two of them it is like they are speaking a "language" to each other. Interesting to watch their facial expressions and gestures as they play.
Holy fuck these guys are fantastic. I remember seeing this on TV, at the time I was a big Johnny Carson fan. It's how I learned about the amazing Buddy Rich.
I always remember an interview with Buddy on the Tonight show when Buddy said he had just given a Royal Command Performance for the Queen and she had asked him, "Where do you get all that energy?" and he said, "Just lucky, I guess." Such a maniac, and so salty and streetwise.
There is a really funny interview clip here on youtube where Ed says that he asked Buddy not to do any of those fancy overs and unders Etc. that only he could do and make Ed look bad in comparison. Buddy of course did them anyway and afterward when confronted by Ed says he just got carried away in the moment.
I wore out an audio cassette I recorded off the original broadcast back then. The audio quality (cymbal distortion at the end) was the same as now. Interesting.
Man how I wish I could have played along side Buddy. Thanks for this post, brings back memories of the old days. Check out my tributes to Buddy on my channel as well. I feel very privileged to have seen him play live several times back in the 70s & 80s. He is still inspiring drummers to this day.
That was actually kind of close, bu Buddy had the edge on cleanliness. His rolls were just impeccable, as was all of his synchronization. Shaughnessy was right with him, sync-wise, though, and ALMOST as clean.
One thing I've noticed about Buddy is that you NEVER hear his sticks click together accidentally while he's playing. He knows precisely where he is at all the time.
