There are those, seeking to criticize, who like to say Buddy wasn't "musical" - as if being blessed by being so technically brilliant and so incredibly fast would have to preclude musicality. This solo, another masterwork, again demonstrates how musical he was, his skills seemingly limitless.

Well, Carl Palmer and Billy billy Cobham was worthy. I know that buddy used to claim that young Palmer was from another planet. What separates buddy from the lot is not just because of his elevation as a drummer but also the fact that he was a pioneer that layed many of the foundations which all drummers after him follows to this day. He is by far the most innovative drummer that ever lived and is still also one of the most technically accomplished.

I've seen Buddy two times and I've seen Carl Palmer four times. Carl "modeled himself after Buddy." Buddy was the "KING!" At some point I read Buddy referred Carl as a "bitch." Since Buddy is gone...in my opinion...Carl is the best. Buddy...invented "drum solos"...love him.

I saw Buddy with his orchestra at Bristol UK every year from 1966 to 1973 , unforgettable , his solos are still ringing in my ears especially his West Side Story drum solo in 1966 in front of most of Britain's top drummers, the solo was 16 minutes long and unfortunately was not recorded. I still have all the concert programmes.

This has to be one of my favourite drum solos of his. There does tend to be a little bit of a theme and a little bit of repetition in a lot of Buddy Rich's drum solos, but there was something about this one that was definitely structured differently. Just awesome. I love the way he mellows it out with the stick tricks towards the end and then suddenly fires it up again, I love the way he builds it there.

+erzug I heard he played a club in Harlem, when he was just starting out, where he kicked off the band with a semi drum solo, which caught the attention of the musically critical audience and when the stage curtain opened they saw he had his right arm in a plaster cast and sling ! Always gave 110% and expected it of the musicians he surrounded himself with. So fortunate to have seen him several times live. Last time I saw him was at University of North Texas a few years before his passing. He had just come off heart surgery and could still play circles around guys half his age. He was playing with college musicians, too, and giving everybody hell. Loved Buddy Rich as much as Philly Joe Jones. RIP BR! Thanks for posting this.

@MorbidManMusic I think Buddy was relating to his daily routine on tour not how he archived his ability, in the past he studied under some of the best

    • @nthdegree1269
      @nthdegree1269 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@MorbidManMusic No he didn't practice in the sense of spending time at home and practicing on his own to improve. His practice was his rehearsals with the band, and sharing tips with others and vice versa. He was a prodigy as well as one of those who could learn a piece after one hearing. Just look at the Carson clips or other shows from the times. They would often get him some cheap kit he never even touched. Or he would play some one else's kit without a rehearsal. His natural talents limited him in certain ways as things came far too easy. He stuck with what he liked and became very set in his ways.

Every time you saw him and his greats bands you thought, how is that possible? Did I really see what I thought I just saw/heard?
Even as a teenager in the mid-late 1970s I knew I would never, ever see anything like it again.
Here in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN he played: The Prom Center, Orchestra Hall, The Riverview Supper Club, & others, and the last time in town in I believe March, 1986 at Bloomington-Kennedy High School. Were we ever lucky! RIP forever Buddy

You're welcome John, I'm glad I was able to. I saw him play 3 times in the u.k. He did a midnight show in the New Theater, Cardiff and the place was packed. The band kicked off and I thought the sound was wooly ( awful ). At the end of the tune Buddy asked one of the band to tap the mike stand. It turned out that a trumpet player, next to the mixing desk had forgotten to turn the P.A on !. Buddy just said " These folks have paid good money to see us tonight and we are gonna give them a show ". The P.A was turned on, the band played the opening tune again, the sound was great and we all had our "moneys worth ". I don't know what happened to the trumpet guy afterwards...

artfrob , Great story about the Cardiff gig. His humor at the end of the sets was great too. Over here (USA) he would appear on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" often and they would crack each other up.
At concerts he could/would be even be funnier. Once during the short (a few beats) pause in Channel One Suite, a younger guy in front of me was counting out loud and Buddy & band heard him. Buddy and whoever in the band could had huge smiles. Buddy pointed with laughter and appreciation to him for his knowledge of the song. Another one of those sweet moments during his concerts.

The last time i saw Buddy play at the Barry memorial hall, prior to his heart by pass there was the usual 'glytch'. This time the guy on the spot light, assigned to high light each indivividual soloist...must have been a bit deaf as he either stayed on Buddy or swung round to a sax guy tuning his reed whilst the piano player was in the dark. If looks could kill. Buddy, had enough. Whilst driving the band he placed both sticks into a bow and arrow and started firing at the spot guy and he never missed a beat...At the end of the session Buddy came to the audience with towel, asked if they would like anything special, one lone voice said 'Another Drum Solo' ...a big grin from Buddy....great night...artfrob

I normally take a snooze during any drum solo longer than 30 seconds. But Rich. No. He does not waste a single second of playing.

    Young drummers take note.
Playing 4 piece.... no muffling on the snare and toms.

Ah, the Ludwig years. I suspect he could have played CB700 and still sounded amazing. There was a local music store that had the Ludwig Buddy Rich kit, complete with the wrapped throne. Man, I lusted after that kit. Though when it came time to buy my first new kit, I couldn't help myself and went with Slingerland, because most of the photos of him, Louie Bellson, and Gene Krupa had Slingeland. Still have that kit!

I know I’ve often noticed that as well. He often has a bored look on his face like he’d rather be doing anything else.
