Thanks for this video. I have a a 91 LS that I love. It's my second '91. The first one (which I drove for the last 12 years) just went to the "farm in the country" due to high mileage, brakes, fuel lines (etc) and RUST. But not before being stripped for parts. My "new" '91 was a barn find with only 75K on the clock. I hope to keep it as long as I will live. (I'm 67). Just had it Ziebarted last week as I live in Chicago with all the salt in the winter. These are the coolest trucks and always get interest from the passing trafffic. You should get a great price for that rig. Old "Japanese iron" is making a comeback in pricing. I recently saw a '91 with 250+K go for $16K.
Great video. I got a 1990 four door manual and I love it. Hope to keep it forever. Had a rough summer with it. Crank but no start. New distributor and the ignition control module and it started. Now it’s running rough. Idle is surging. Think I need a new throttle body. Won’t be cheap but worth it
@@davidkeetz it sat in my mother-in-law’s driveway for about 20 years. She felt like it made it look like someone was always at home so they wouldn’t break in. The city made her move it so she gave it to me as a gift.
thanks for posing this up - i had all of that same work done when i found my '89 in 2014, and it is running strong at 340K miles at the tail end of 2022. hope it sold for a good price!
i do valve guide seals on my 1989 Montero every 40 thousand miles cause they dont last very long on the 3.0 i do the job with the heads on the engine it a peice of cake and can be done in 3 hrs roughly
I just picked up a Gen1 last weekend, almost like this one's twin. 89 LWB, V6, LSD rear, bouncy seat, same color interior. It has even more miles at 374k, but drove it home.
It's worth buying yours after it's all been thoroughly documented on video. I have trust issues (lol) but seeing all the hard work makes a compelling case for buying yours specifically!
great work, I am about to do my valve cover gasket and lifters on my 89 v6 montero. I have that nasty lifter tick. can you do the valve stem seals without removing the heads?
This is the first Gen 1 Montero I've ever seen with that small sunroof over the driver and passenger seats. The factory option sunroof that I've always seen (and that I could find in the parts diagrams) for these was about twice that size but it started basically at the head rest of the front seats and extended back over the rear seats. Can you confirm that this was an aftermarket installed by one of the previous owners, or was this some special order option from the factory? Do you have a closeup of the sunroof switch? Also - did you end up having to replace the intake water pipe that runs through the valley between the heads? That thing tends to rust up pretty good after 20 years.
I have a 1989 maroon 4dr factory sunroof which the back passengers can stand through😊, love mine but after spending a boat load on wiring issues had to park it, working on my '88 Raider(imported for Dodge 2dr) in that 80's blue/silver rebuilding an extra 2.6ltr that I got with a parts car, I have 4 1st gen 4drs, & 2 2drs
You worked on a couple of Montero’s….. I have a 1991 Mitsubishi Montero I would like to get a quality water pump, and also a fuel pump unit,do you have it any recommendations?
For waterpumps i almost always go with Aisin. However with this rig, i went with a gates timing belt kit that came with a water pump. Gates has been pretty well known in the montero world to have decent quality parts. Aisin is probably one step up from the gates. For the fuel pump, i would go with denso. Denso also has a good reputation. Delphi also makes a pump, i personally have not had to replace any so i have no direct experience with them. But generally denso and delphi make good parts.

5k is a great price for a running one. Great video
I have a ‘91 Montero with 97K miles. I love it.
wow - you might have the lowest mileage example out there. ha. Great find.

How did your gen2 montero do towing the trailer and 1st gen montero?
5k? Damn!
This is why I got 2 1st gen sorentos. Montero prices were steep. I wanted a 99 sr. Still do,maybe someday.

Its actually a dealer installed sunroof. Thats why it was such a clean install. But yes, factory sunroofs are over the rear bench mostly.

Nice video and good work making it useable ... has it sold ?
It did! Its actually in one of the new "matts off road recovery " videos haha
Good job bro where did you get all the parts. I have a 89 that I want to do pretty much the same service you did. Thanks for the video.
All the parts came from rockauto! Thanks for watching
Evan would love your feedback on the kits you used I am rebuilding a spare engine on the stand for mine
I used a gates timing belt kit/ water pump. For the seals and stuff i would go koyo or any other japanese brand.
Anyone, I have 1990 mit mont , has a high idle about 1400rpm on park. Tps, iac, maf, temo sensor, have been changed any ideas,
Look into a FIAV bypass plate
