    Cool little gem of a video.. I like the part when you tossed the old yellow welder out the window

    I weld 3/8 plate, do structural welding on vehicles and trailers. I've put a mile of wire through it and never hit the duty cycle. This welder in the right hands is capable of way more then people who know it all about welding will ever give it credit for.
    Did I mention I run mine of a 3k inverter and a 50ft extension cord with my service truck?

    • @shermanyoung8185
      @shermanyoung8185 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adam M, please forgive me not understanding you, but do you mean 3000 watts inverter generator or $3000 dollars inverter generator 🤔 because I'm thinking about buying a generator to power mine too 🤔 thanks

      @@shermanyoung8185 he’s talking about 3k watts. Dollar amount is irrelevant

      what wire do you use?

    • @adamm1998
      @adamm1998 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Welding is all about heat, you have to heat the metal to welding temperatures. My setup is not ideal, I'm self employed and underfunded. My setup cost about $350 finding deals on Facebook and bartering on job sites. I use a 3k modified sine wave inverter, oxy-propane torch, 3 interstate batteries.
      When welding heavy steel I will run tack welds at full voltage low wire speed over the length of the area to be welded before laying the final weld. That's if my torch is dry and not an option, I'd the torch is up and running I'll preheat the area and in extreme cases I'll put my welding head on and heat the area ahead of the welder almost like a tig welder.
      On thick metal I've found .035 deposits metal to quickly for good results, because of that and my daisy chained AC-DC-AC-DC welding setup. I run .030 wire. I prefer central weldings 71t-GS it's $17 for a 2lb spool where I live and I find it the easiest of all the cheap wires to run and the most forgiving.

      @@adamm1998 thanks dawg. I'm going to use solar. 20 amp pure sign inverter. 4 interstate 6 volt.

    I bought a Century FC-90 about 3 years ago, at the time Harbor Freight flux-core welders were only AC, not DC like the Century. I got the same results on welding, as you did, with multi-pass on 1/4" Mild Steel, but I welded on both sides for strength.

    I bought this as my first welder. I have welded a Coleman minibike frame that broke - 9 months later it still holds. I welded a piece of playground equipment - it still holds 9 months later. I also welded a trailer hitch tongue onto my trailer after the old one was bent in an accident - that has held up under commercial use for the last 4 months. I use it with a 25 foot 12 awg extension cord on a 20 amp house outlet, or on my 9000 watt Predator generator. I have never maxed out the duty cycle, and I am not a pro. I just find a way to get it done like most of you.

What a difference.I am now using solid .030 wire and have had great results. Hey Rick a rule of thumb is when you have slag you drag. Instead of pushing the puddle pull it. Have the wire facing the start and drag the puddle toward, similar to stick. I also like to run circles with flux it gives a nice bead profile. Good luck!

    I had a 125 AC version of that 90 bought on clearance at Harbor Freight. Fantastic starter gasless flux core welder. I upgraded to a Titanium 125 Easy Weld after making some decent money with the Chicago Electric 125. I then sold the Chicago Electric to a guy who I knew didn't afford to buy a welder for $50. He's still using that damn thing and is making decent money in Kirkland wa.

    • @RickRabjohn
      @RickRabjohn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Been thinking about this, but coming up short. I guess it depends on the thickness of the patch panels - I have welded 20 gauge steel using multiple tacs but it's easy to spend too much time over target and blow a hole through the thin metal.

      hahahahaha - not tossing this machine - it's been working great. I also find that it's forgiving in terms of the settings - if I'm in the ballpark on the settings - it just works. I still use my Everlast stick welder for anything over 1/8 inch but this one handles everything else.

    Aww man, that was a dick move tossing that out the window. Even a crappy welder is a welder someone could have used , assuming it was still working. If it was dead, i retract my "dick move" statement. I tuned in here because i am considering the FC90 welder, havent seen much bad about it. I learned long ago that spending a bit more on a reputable manufacturer serves my long term needs much better (I am a professional Master Automotive Tech). I generally buy the premium tools. No HFT in my tool box, at home or at work. I dont need a big welder, I dont even need a welder, but i want to learn to weld. I want to learn to weld on a decent welder. First project is building a cart/frame for an RV generator i have in storage so i can make that monster portable, to run the welder and compressor in my detached shop (about half mile away)ha ha.
    Thanks for the review. it helps, thumbs up to you.

      Thanks Rod - I was experiencing Post Traumatic Stress from the history of bad welds due to that welder; it never worked right despite many efforts to fix. So, the window toss was part of my recovery plan:-))) Welding is not that hard to learn and wish you luck and big fun as you get into it.

    You think this would work to weld up handles on "smaller" billets like around 2 inches tall or even just san mai billet around 3/8" thick? It's been a while since I've searched around for one but I use to ask around which decent 120v (I don't have 220 in my shop) welder could handle this stuff and was never able to get an answer. I also like welding a handle on 1/4" bar stock to make forging blades easier to manipulate. I just know that my old 90amp HF is a pain to use with the choppy wire feed rate so I honestly could never control my welds enough to really test what it could hold. I know preheating can be key, especially with carbon steels and these smaller welders, so something that will get a handle stay stuck to a billet even with some preheating would be nice. Any recommendations? Thanks

    • @RickRabjohn
      @RickRabjohn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe it could handle what your talking about with multiple passes set at the maximum. Obviously, a 220 stick welder like an Everlast would be more effective on a single pass, but this welder with multiple passes can work. Good luck!

      It's very easy to use. I would suggest replacing the ground clamp for a better one. If you are using it to weld such items like muffler pipe, use a large C-clamp on the pipe...and connect the ground clamp to the C-clamp. Clamp it as close as you can to the welding location.

      Common knowledge. DC negative. Reduces spatter...

    • @elfpimp1
      @elfpimp1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RickRabjohn so, a DC negative is just cleaner, it's spatter is greatly reduced as it DC negative doesn't overheat the wire causing the flux to be useless and getting spatter all over the place. We have a couple vids over at weld dot com channel about it. Check 'em out.. They remind me of my welding teachers, lol..
