When I first started sewing I would have days where I thought, "Oh, gosh, I should be better than this by now. Why isn't it working out? I don't understand what these instructions are trying to tell me!" All I ever saw were TH-cam bloggers whose videos looked flawless. So yes, I heartily agree, and was very happy to see, that you left the entire process in tact on the footage. Thank you!
I had actually put away a pajama top that I just could not figure out how to do the collar interfacing/button placket based on the pattern instructions and the TH-cam videos I could find. When I watched you fix your project, it became clear what I should do. I did, like you, go back to the pattern and re-read the instructions and I STILL could not figure it out based on that, but how you explained it made complete sense to me and I could begin work on the project again. Many thanks for keeping that bit in the video. .
Thank you for leaving in the places where you struggled with the construction! I think you did a good honest job! It's funny how sleeping on a problem will help you work through it, that happens to me too. I also know that when I start making mistakes that I need to stop for the day because I am tired and it will go from bad to worse if I continue.
Hi Sally 're neck facing and front placket: you need to sew the short vertical end of the neck facing to the front vertical placket with the prescribed sa. Then the placket is pulled back to the correct width for front placket. The next thing is to sew round the whole neck from one side to the other. Then when you then out to wrong side you have a neat top edge. It's a lovely shirt to make, I have made 2 and love them both!
Hi Sally, funny but I’d just watched the first Wren Blouse sew-along tutorial on Chalk and Notch YT which covers the bit you were stuck on. I wasn’t sure from that video though either, which is why I tuned into your sew along to get a better understanding, before I send for the pattern. Thanks for your vlog, it’s a lovely blouse on you. Susan x
I was debating whether to buy this pattern, and then came across your video. So pleased I did - it was very informative and I'm going ahead! Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this see along, it was really helpful to see that you also had a problem with the instructions for the facing. I started to make this but could not work out how they were asking you to attach the facing so searched TH-cam and found you. You now have a new subscriber. Your blouse is very pretty 😊
4/24. I was ready to throw my Wren out the window while trying to add the collar!! So I decided to watch a video tutorial… and yes, I chose to watch yours!! I wanted to throw the TV out the window!! But you figured it out and so did I. All is well, blood pressure is under control🤣🤣. Thank you for helping me! Great tutorial!!
I think your honesty is very reassuring for the rest of us! We all have "those days" when everything seems to go wrong. Like you, I have often woken up having resolved a sewing problem in my sleep - maybe that's why they say to "sleep on it" when you're perplexed about something 😊 Anyway, the end result is gorgeous, well worth the effort 👍
Thank you I'm glad you think so! So funny how those moments happen isn't it, our minds are obviously always thinking about sewing, yes that's funny I've never thought about that saying before but I suppose that makes sense. Thank you I'm glad you like the blouse x
This pattern looks great made up. I am pleased that you left the mistakes in and said how you corrected them when you went back the next time, it makes it so much more real as not everything goes right all of the time.
Love this blouse and thank you so much for such an honest video! It’s good to see the reality of sewing-even when it goes wrong. Think I may give this pattern a go! X
Thank you so much for watching, I'm glad you liked it warts and all haha! Enjoy making the blouse if you try it, it's a lovely sew (when it goes right)! xx
Thank you Sally, I loved watching you work out some different sewing techniques and I appreciate your dedication to us and allowing us to learn along with you. You are a tremendous help and inspiration to me. Your blouse looks so pretty on you, well done.
Ah thank you so much I'm so pleased you think so. It's always helpful to hear that these things happen to us all I think. I'm glad you like the blouse, I wore it for the first time yesterday and it was really comfortable to wear x
I loved that you showed your mistakes and how you resolved them,it helps us to see mistakes are normal.I always find if things start going wrong ,when sewing,if after a cup of tea it's the same it's best to walk away.I love this blouse ,the fabric is gorgeous. The design on the sleeve would look lovely in a plain fabric, although I still love yours.I use greaseproof paper to trace patterns. If you find it difficult to see the lines on the original pattern I find it's a good idea to have it placed on white paper. You can buy cheap rolls of wallpaper lining or cheap rolls of drawing paper, white printing paper or any plain white paper. This helps the pattern lines to stand out and helps support the tissue paper. You could also draw around the lines on your pattern with a dark soft pencil or gel pen(I find these don't rip the paper).I hope this helps.
Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed it. I agree, a cup of tea usually is my go to first too. I use greaseproof paper as well as Burda tracing paper sometimes. Thank you for the tip on tracing patterns too that sounds like a very good idea. Thanks so much for watching xx
Thank you so much for being so honest, if like me you’re not a very confident sewist it helps a lot to know that experienced people have things to overcome too. Thoroughly enjoyed this video and I won’t be as scared to sew it up now x

I also struggled with the instructions regarding the front facing , but after reading one of the comments on your vlog I was able to move forward. I’m still mid construction so I’m not sure how the final garment will turn out. Yours is really lovely, thanks for the tutorial.
I'm glad to know it wasn't just me that found it confusing. I hope your blouse turns out ok, I haven't worn mine a lot yet because I made it at the beginning of autumn but I do love it xx

Thank you! Yes I think we do all have them don't we, I just need to learn to walk away earlier I think :). So glad you enjoyed it anyway thank you for watching xx
I have this pattern and plan to make it soon. Your version is lovely. I definitely would have fudged up the neck facing/button band so thank you for doing this as a sew-along and including all of the footage. I had the same experience this week with everying going well during the day after a horrible evening of sewing the night before. A good night's sleep can fix a lot!
Thanks so much and I'm pleased you found the facing part helpful, it's quite difficult to know how clear I'm being!! Sleep definitely fixes a lot, my problem is knowing when to stop I tend to stubbornly keep going and end up making more work for myself in the long run! Thank you for watching xx
Hi Sally just watched further on and you had worked the neck bit out. So it looks beautiful. My feed back on content etc is that you get the balance just right, bit of sewing sped up, lots of how to and showing things that don't go according to the pattern is honest and instructive. We learn more from correcting problems as I find processes that go well first time are forgotten. So keep up the good work love your vlogs and videos. 😁😁😁👌👌👌👌
Thank you so much for the feedback I'm pleased you think it's the right balance, I agree I think it's good to have these challenges every so often because it's all learning. Every day's a school day in sewing. I'm so pleased you like my videos - thanks so much for watching xx
Your blouse is a total winner, colour, fabric, style and it looks great on you too …. Agree about cutting out and sewing in one day🥴 I usually decide on size etc, trace, cut out and set up machine etc on day one and sew together on next day
Hi Sally, love the fabric you picked! I find loosely cutting out each of the pattern pieces (keeping all the sizes) and then tracing them with Swedish tracing paper helps (rather than tracing off the whole pattern paper)
I made the Wren blouse and ran into the same head scratcher on the facing that you did. I had to read the instructions a couple of times and slow myself down to figure out what they meant by in bringing the edge of the fabric. Initially I was looking at the wrong edge and did a slow read and careful scrutiny of the pictures in the instructions. It could have definitely been clearer and what saved me was previous experience with placket finishes. How did you find the shoulder fit? I have broad shoulders for my height and I found that the shoulder seam was a little off my shoulder - never run into that before. I have also found that I have a hard time shutting off my noodling about how I am going to figure out a construction issue if I step away from it and have woken with revelations. My husband Charlie says I need to stop sewing right before bed! Love your make!
Ah I'm so pleased to hear that (in the nicest possible way) I did wonder if it was just me but I didn't find the drawings particularly clear either. I agree I think previous experience with other garments was what got me there in the end. I found the shoulder fit ok for me actually it sits just before the shoulder drops, if that makes sense!! Funny how those revelations happen isn't it. Thank you for watching xx
@@SecretLifeOfASeamstress definitely not you. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out that facing by the way the directions and illustrations directed. It was when I gave up trying to figure it out and just went with how I did it on one of the heirloom little boy shirts I made in the past that the penny dropped about what edge to bring together. I definitely want to give this pattern another go. I love the sleeves.
Thanks so much for all the great tips and for explaining the neckband. I definitely have days like that with my sewing! You have given me inspiration and confidence now to try the pattern 😃The sleeve construction sounds interesting with the two pieces but I do like the puffy sleeves. It does look lovely in the seersucker fabric and I like the length you chose.
Thanks so much I'm glad you like the blouse, and I'm also glad I've helped you to feel you can give the pattern a go, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. The sleeves are lovely and with the long sleeves there is an open cuff which is also pretty. I hope you enjoy the pattern if you make it xx
Thanks for your honesty. I had a bad day sewing yesterday, with my l Safiya trouser, just went wrong!! I am hoping that my Lyra dress for Rachael will be ok, which needs hemming
Lovely blouse and yes it was the right thing to do to leave the frustrating bits in because as you say we all have days like that! I just cut a whole blouse out upside down on a precious fabric that I had to pre order 😫 I stitched it up because my partner said no one will notice and he was right and I couldn’t bare to waste the fabric. Can you tell me if you have had to replace your auto threader, I have the same machine and my threader has broken. X
Oh no!! Yes definitely all have those days and I don't think it makes any difference how 'experienced' you are haha. I'm glad you still wore your blouse, I bought a dress for my daughter from a shop and parts of that had the print upside down, if I had made it I would have thought it was wrong but as you say no one else would have noticed. I never use my auto threader to be honest so I've not needed to replace it x
Hi! I know this video is a year old, but I do have a tip for tracing off the pieces from traditional pattern paper. Take any other type of paper (gift wrap, butcher , copy paper, etc.) making sure it's large enough for the pattern piece to fit. Place some Tracing/Transfer Carbon Paper on top (with the waxy side facing down) and then your actual pattern on top of that. If you use a smooth (not serrated) tracing wheel, you can easily copy the pattern and it will end up on the paper underneath. And this keeps your original pattern in tact.
Beautiful! The facing looks fine. I would open up the facing and flip the placket around so they’re right sides together and sew along the neckline. You should be able to then flip it out!
Thank you! I managed to work it out in the end, I think I was just trying to do too much in one day and my brain was fuzzled haha. Thanks for watching xx
Gorgeous blouse, I was thinking of buying it. We all make mistakes and walking away for a while always helps! I had a lightbulb moment in the middle of the night when I was making my Carolyn Pjs, when I worked out what I was doing wrong with the facings. The fabric looks amazing on your blouse, well done.
Yes I should have walked away earlier shouldn't I! So funny how those moments happen isn't it, obviously our brains are always thinking about sewing even when we might not realise haha. Thank you for watching xx
There is a simple way to trace a tissue pattern. Put your tracing paper down first and then lay the tissue pattern on top of it. Use a Sharpie felt tip marker (this is what they’re called in the US) and trace the pattern. Because the tissue paper is light weight, the marker bleeds through to the tracing paper.
@@SecretLifeOfASeamstress I am struggling to work out the different size lines on the pieces. I use very light weight interfacing and it works just fine for other makers’ patterns. I have this Wren blouse and the Fringe dress.
I didn't have any problems tracing this pattern; I put a large sheet of white paper under the pattern and used Swedish tracing paper. I used a highlighter on my size for the first couple of pieces but I didn't need it so I stopped
Sorry did not play to the end and you didn’t do French seams. Great video just would like more detail on the way second part of sleeve fits as still only advanced beginner!
I would say there's a could of techniques in there that might be a bit tricky if you're a total beginner, if you've made a couple of garments already with facings, casings etc you should be fine x
If you want to trace off patterns that use tissue paper put a white fabric or paper under the pattern paper. It makes it much easier. Indi patterns are way too expensive to be cutting appart.
I wont buy patterns made in that tissue as I like to make a pattern more than once. And sometimes you might decide you’d be better with a different size!?
Yes that's why I usually trace. Someone suggested putting white paper underneath the pattern before tracing so I might try that next time. Thanks for watching xx
Like you say everyone has bad sewing days, I walk away if things are going bad, I never cut and sew on the same day and brake sewing into 3 parts over three days as don't have long each day for sewing. Susan Peach
That is a very good way to approach it. Sometimes, because I have to get everything out every time I sew I feel as though I need to get as much done as I can while it's all set up. Silly really because it's not like it takes that long to get it all out again the next day. Thank you for watching xx

Oh thank you that's a great tip I'll have to try that next time :) Thanks for watching xx
I use a very lightweight interfacing type fabric for tracing patterns. Cheap and durable.
Thank you that’s a great idea and not something I’d thought of doing before xx
@@SecretLifeOfASeamstress I am struggling to work out the different size lines on the pieces. I use very light weight interfacing and it works just fine for other makers’ patterns. I have this Wren blouse and the Fringe dress.
PS it's lovely!
I didn't have any problems tracing this pattern; I put a large sheet of white paper under the pattern and used Swedish tracing paper. I used a highlighter on my size for the first couple of pieces but I didn't need it so I stopped
Great tip about the white paper - thank you! x
Sorry did not play to the end and you didn’t do French seams. Great video just would like more detail on the way second part of sleeve fits as still only advanced beginner!
Is this sewing pattern great for beginners
I would say there's a could of techniques in there that might be a bit tricky if you're a total beginner, if you've made a couple of garments already with facings, casings etc you should be fine x
Feeling the same about the front fold! The pattern needs a bit of a rewrite.
It’s a tricky one isn’t it! I wonder if they will eventually x
I haven’t even been able to work out the different size lines to start tracing out the pattern. Very frustrating.
Oh no! xx
If you want to trace off patterns that use tissue paper put a white fabric or paper under the pattern paper. It makes it much easier. Indi patterns are way too expensive to be cutting appart.
Thanks so much for the tip I'll definitely give it a try. Thank you for watching :) x
I wont buy patterns made in that tissue as I like to make a pattern more than once. And sometimes you might decide you’d be better with a different size!?
I have bad sewing days too. Sometimes I just put it on my mannequin and she looks after it until I’m feeling more like sewing lol
Yes that's why I usually trace. Someone suggested putting white paper underneath the pattern before tracing so I might try that next time. Thanks for watching xx
I'm glad it's not just me haha x
That’s a good idea 😊
Like you say everyone has bad sewing days, I walk away if things are going bad, I never cut and sew on the same day and brake sewing into 3 parts over three days as don't have long each day for sewing. Susan Peach
That is a very good way to approach it. Sometimes, because I have to get everything out every time I sew I feel as though I need to get as much done as I can while it's all set up. Silly really because it's not like it takes that long to get it all out again the next day. Thank you for watching xx
