I’ve been cutting wood for 45 years, for personal use only. I’ve learned more from watching your videos in the last six months than I’ve learned in 45 years. So all I want to say is thank you so much. I use zip ties for measuring the length of my logs, so fast, I have a Fiskars X27 splitting ax/mall, I sharpen my chains with a Dremel, and most importantly, I wear chaps every time I cut a log.
I love this trick! I started using zip ties to measure cuts, only a few months ago. I have a neighbor that uses a PVC pipe with a magnet on his bar. I came to help drop and buck up a tree, and just knocked his socks off with this little tip! My customers love how neat and quick I can zip up a tree, at 16" lengths, with zero effort!
Nice video Chris. You have described about every method for measuring (all work well). I like your “curb feeler” method best. I have a little hand saw (actually the saw from a miter box-very fine teeth). There is a metal rod threaded on both ends attached to a hole in the blade on one end and a metal washer on the other end. My grandfather gave me this over 60 yrs ago and his initials are carved into the wooden handle. Every time I pick up the saw, I’m reminded of the man who made it and who was such powerful influence on my life.
G’morning Chris. I have used your zip tie method since the first day I seent you do it, years ago. I used to use my 18” bar as a marker. THANKS. GoodNightIrene
Good morning, Chris, from southeastern Pennsylvania! I always enjoy your videos and try to comment when I can. I guess i'm an old guy and have tried a ton of ways to mark rounds, all of which you mentioned. It is really a personal preference, but my absolute favorite has been the Firewood Prosizer laser. They now have the green laser, which is easier to see in bright light. Also there is a basic model which is much cheaper than what you mentioned. I tried the zip ties, but was getting way too distracted visually. To each his own, and that is what is so wonderful about the woodhound community!👍
This zip tie log marking method has saved me untold hours since I started using it. Thanks again, Chris, for this and all of your other tried and true methods for producing firewood fast and easy.
After seeing the zip tie trick in one of your previous videos, I got some big zip ties from work and put them on my saw. I didn’t put the tape around them to keep them in place as I like being able to fold it down since my chainsaw has a case. But the measure from my bar to the zip tie is about 15 inch, and I like a 16-18 inch log so I just eyeball the extra inch or so. It is so much faster than using the bar as a measure stick. I was helping my buddy get wood from where the state dumped some cut trees yesterday, and I about ran through my cuts. We split it back home, and it was perfect to just run through the splitter without a second thought.
Thanks Chris. Simple, time efficient, effort efficient, accurate enough ... is elegantly optimal. (Being cheap and easy it doesn't fit major drivers of the system.) I may have something similarly useful in the area of chain depth gauge setting (a constant angle gauge) When I manage to make and test it, if it works I'll let you know and send you one. If it works as I expect it should give you fast cutting to the witness mark. Cheers sincerely d
Your videos are great. Love the zip ties idea. Do you have a video with thoughts on the Echo 7310. Thinking about something a little bigger and it looks like a good saw.
Mornin Y’all! Chris with his face cord of chainsaws, show off🤣. I like your zip tie method but I use 2 of the biggest ties I can find and attach them in opposite directions and pink tape them together at the very end. They even fold towards the back of the saw when not needed. Last for a long time. Thanks buddy.
Greetings from Greece Chris! I have installed the zip ties since I saw you using 2+ years ago and it is a game changer! I prefer my zip ties retracting like Bert.
I took your idea and upgraded it. I bought a quick connect GoPro mount that fit 1 inch handle bars. I put the zip ties on the mount and I can quickly take them on and off my saw.
I use tywraps after watching your videos!! Some of my friends are also after seeing mine. I gave you all the credit since me and my friends knew I wasn't smart enough to think of it myself!!! Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
I am going to have to try. The zip ties. Burning for myself never really matters that much. Not that I trying to sell wood. I need to try make it Match. I not huge fan of the ones that stick on the bar. Great video.
Ive been a number 6 twister for consistancy or just eyeballer for camp fire wood. Love the zip tie concept will give it a go. That said, i will contine to barely bump the bicycle in the garage. TOTALLY refusing to hang a tennis ball for the windshield like those Stihl guys!
I'm a measured stick and a can of bright green spray paint sorta guy. Works for me. I break a stick off about 2" shorter than the stroke of my splitter.
I’ve been using a stick and folding pruning saw for awhile. But sitting here wondering if the blade could slotted into the measuring stick and then just rotated up for a quick scribe and etc.
You think you have enough saws Chris? I know, they are like guns, you can never have too many. Last year when I was hurt, a few friends cut up 20 hickory trees that uprooted on my place. I love these guys, they are great friends but the pieces go from 12" to 19" but most are 1-14 and very hard to stack. Consistency makes stacking sooo much easier.
Great idea. The only suggestion is to use UV resistent zip-ties and self-amalgamating tape that won't unravel into a sticky mess like standard electrical tape. Yes, it's a little more money but will last longer.
The company I worked for used millions of Ty-wraps from Panduit, aka Zip Ties. I've been using that method for 50 years. Shalom/gw. PS. I see you like Husqvarna.
@InTheWoodyard Hello again. Just wanted to say thank you for all the great videos. You, my friend, are a great man. The information you share with your viewers is spot on, especially the safety items, like chaps. I was a Husqvarna dealer for 8 1/2 years. My Husqvarna sales rep used to show me articles and photos of chainsaw accident victims. Quite the horror show! Chainsaws are great tools, but they have the potential for doing unbelievable damage to flesh and bone. ALWAYS BE CAREFUL. Shalom/gw
@InTheWoodyard I know you will understand this. I have always had a "machine Jones". From cars and motorcycles to machine tools to excavating equipment to private pilot. I love cutting and splitting firewood. Husqvarna is my saw of choice. As George S. Patton once said of war, "God help me I love it!" ❤️ Shalom/gw
Speaking of saving time, see if you can get a dump box for your new truck aluminum are maybe carbon fiber they have. Don't shoot the messenger. You put all this time-saving in my brain. I wish they had TH-cam 60 years ago. Kenny from Western North Carolina. Enjoy the spring weather cuz we know it's going to be quite warm.
A lot of people want me to have a dump box in my truck. I use my truck for a lot of other things too so I am not interested in a dump box for it. I do have 4 dump trailers that I can use any time I want so..no thanks.
What I use is a female air fitting welded to one of the nuts on the bar. I then have a female air fitting with an insert that has 1/2" bolt threads inside of it. I then cut a rod to length and thread into the female air fitting. I can quick connect the length or rod to the saw fast or remove it. The way the air fitting is welded to the bar bolt it still allows the scrench to by used as normal. I had to cut the air fitting threads of prior to welding to the nut to keep it small that the nut. Been using this for years.
I stole your zip tie on the chainsaw handle, and improved on it a bit. I use 2 zip ties, from 2 different sides. One on top of the the other, then I use electrical tape to mount a pencil between the 2 ties. The pencil eraser sticks out at 16inches and is the target. When not in use, I just fold the whole thing back towards the rear of the saw.
I like to start my saws and let them idle for a minute or 2 depending on temperature. Then I shut them off and let it heat soak engine. Same after if I have been bucking a lot. Let temps come down before shutting it off.
They had sticks 15/16 inch long mounted to the saw only thing is it would break off but the tree company owner when he cut wood sixteen inches on the dot all of them another one I found have guys cutting all the time and splitting thanks Chris
After seeing the 2 big saws and the 390. And comparing to the ones I have. For the non computer controlled carb saws, ONLY the Choke lever changed color around 2010. I agree! but it is not nearly as inexpensive as he makes it out to be $ .07 he uses two zip ties plus electrical and duct tape so probably closer to $.15 GNI 1%💩😁
So, you one of "those" guys ...everyone makes great saws or they would not be in business...let me guess... Fords are the only trucks too? Dodge maybe??
Chris, would you believe that I've invented a pair of smart safety glasses that indicates a perfect 16" on a log without measuring and marking? Nah, didn't think you'd believe that!🥸
@@InTheWoodyard Actually I have given some thought to it, but I'm sure that it would be dependent upon always being a precise distance away from the log. Chris, you could probably do this, and if you do, I hope it will make you a millionaire!

My favorite saw Is the one that is sharp and running great.
Amen Chris ,but the site of that truck bed did make my soul happy 😁 lol thanks for the video
@InTheWoodyard At first glance, I thought you took us to a pumpkin farm. Glad my eyes are fixed and I realized they were saws.

I started using the zip-tie method as soon as I watched one of your videos a year ago! Thanks!

I like the zip-tie method the best, but it limits you to cutting from left to right.

I have poached your "curb feeler" zip tie idea on my saws. It works great, thank you !
