BALAYAGE, FOILYAGE, OMBRE - WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? & WHAT TO ASK YOUR HAIRSTYLIST FOR

  • Breaking down some common hair color techniques to give you a better understanding of what they are, how they work, and what results they'll create. Hopefully now you'll be a little less confused when talking with your hairstylist and explaining what you want!
    Keep in mind, like I mentioned in the video, these terms mainly refer to the TECHNIQUE and not so much the final result. A hairstylist that specializes in color (particularly these "lived in" low maintenance colors) will know the best technique to use for your specific hair and hair goals.

    Please keep in mind, these are general descriptions of some popular terms/techniques. Each one can slightly vary depending on the stylist and where you live. As you can see from the photos, a lot of these techniques will give a very similar end result, so don't get too caught up in the terminology - let your hairstylist worry about that part ;)
    ALSO - I forgot to mention "shadow root" - but that's basically the same thing as a root smudge.

    I love the orange theme. 🧡🍊 That's the color of the sacral chakra. You're definitely creative and educate others with your knowledge.
    I experimented with some hair lightener with 20V and hair color 2.5 to 3 levels higher than my hair to create teasylights as a cost-cutting way to add color without tinting my whole head, and it worked nicely.
    Since my hair is curly, the different soft rays of hair color work to my benefit in order to create a soft beach inspired look, especially when the sun shines.
    Sometimes you have to work with the elements of your natural hair rather than forcing it to do your will in order to chase trends that can ultimately harm your hair with time. I speak from experience.
    Not everyone is meant to have a perfectly blonde balayage. But maybe you rock a raven blue black, cherry wood, or metallic balayage that becomes your signature look. In the end, it's more important to be memorable than hip. 💇‍♀️✂️

      Danielle Moxley well if you’re getting any of the techniques in this video they’ll be using bleach. And if you’re going to go to a salon and expect top quality work then you need to expect the price to follow their skill level and art work. If you wanna risk a school to save some bucks then do it. But you get what you pay for

There was a language barrier between her and I and it was difficult to explain what I wanted to say. But all I have to say is thank GOD for Redken Flash Lift pH bonder & shades EQ and FINE FINE FINE sub-sections!!! She lifted unevenly but to about a level 6-7 with 30 volume and minimal breakage. This is not always the case I just got lucky lol

    Which of these techniques do you think would work well for virgin hair that is looking for low maintenance haircare? I always thought I wanted to do a balayage since I heard it's not supposed to damage the hair as much. Now after hearing all this new terminology, I am curious for styles like babyhighlights how much more or less damaging is it to the hair?

    Hiiiiii Sam!!!! I have a question because these hairdressers in my town don't seem that they are being honest with me. I went to a few places with a questions about my hair because I want it bleached blonde.. Okay so my hair is naturally brown and i box dyed it blonde like a year ago so it's half way grown out. And it never came out blonde btw more like a very light brown. Now i want to get it professionally dyed blonde at the salon but my hair is very dry and damaged so do you think it's a good idea to bleach it? Also i have sensitive hair. i got bleached highlights one time and my hair was falling out and was stretching like elastic. The hair dressers I've asked don't seem to be concerned with what I've told them and said they shouldn't have no issue. What do you think? Should i just stay away from the bleach??

    My hairstylist, where I went once and never will again.., really fucked up my hair... I wanted a nice dark brown (my natural hair color) to blond blend and I showed her a picture.. She didn't even talk to me about what I want before she started, I showed her a picture and she said "oh yeah that's a balayage" and started... That should have been the first red flag (But this was my first time in a salon, bc we have our own hairstylist, a friend of my mom, but she isn't specialized in those types, so I went somewhere else) then when she was done with the balayage, I liked it, but only bc my hair was nice and fresh. (i payed 150€) Then after a few days I realized that that wasn't what I wanted, bc the dye was tooo far down (2nd red flag) Then after a week I decided to go there again to let it get fixed (which was a huuuge mistake) I told her again what I wanted, I trusted her which was a huge mistake as well. So she made the balayage again but started nearly at my roots TOO FAR UP!!! It looked nice again after she was finished, but only bc I hadn't seen it that good. I ended up paying 50€ for conditioning, drying, etc.. So I spend 200€ for regretting that I even dyed my hair in the first place, bc it looks bad. Those blond highlights aren't anywhere near blended nicely into my natural dark hair and when my hair is wet it looks like ramen inbetween WHAT I DON'T WANT AT ALL bc I want my hair to even look good when it's wet, bc it's nearly summer and I will be in the pool very often. The picture that I showed her and my result look as far apart as Europe and the US... And now I don't know what to do, I don't want to go back and I don't want to leave my hair like that, bc I don't really like going out in public looking like that. And I want to feel confident, bc I am a waitress and am constantly around people. I think I'll go to another BUT GOOD hairstylist, explain her what I want and how the other one fucked up my balayage/or whatever technique that picture shows and will pay even more for my hair, but when the result will finally end up being how I want it to be, I am willing to pay that price.
    Moral of the story: Do your research, when it comes to hairstylists, etc!!!!
    (Excuse my English, my first language is German🙈💕)

    What's the real difference between sombre and ombre? Some hair salon on ig put a pic on their ad saying that's ombre, and they can do it for $XX, only to backtrack when i asked and say that's not ombre, and it'll cost $XXX 😐

    • @styledbysamvay
      @styledbysamvay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I always see, sombre is somewhere in between an ombre and balayage... but again, the terminology isn't really that important if you just bring in a photo of the look you want. As far as prices go, you can't just say "the hair in this photo will cost X amount" because it all totally depends on each individual client. Everyone has a different starting color, different amount of hair, different hair length, etc. So the price comes down to the amount of time and product that's needed for YOU specifically. Just keep that in mind!

    • @styledbysamvay
      @styledbysamvay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, there's so many factors that are involved with color (especially with lightening) so I can't make any assumptions without being there and seeing your hair and watching what she did. Does this stylist specialize in blondes? How did you find her? Did you do research and look at her portfolio before deciding to go to her? Did she do a thorough consultation at the beginning and explain the process? Did she promise you that you were going to leave with platinum hair that day? All I can say is at least you're lighter than what you started with and (hopefully?) weren't left with damage. I would find a blonde specialistic next time, and hopefully with one or two more appointments you'll get your goal color.

    • @Ascadians
      @Ascadians 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Sam!
      She was referred by an an acquaintance and works at a fairly decent salon in a high-end town.
      I guess my real question is since I know that my hair is not the problem is it normal to keep having to pay for extra sessions to get your hair lighter and lighter?
      I know my hair can lighten because it was almost platinum blonde before she put the toner back on it.

    • @styledbysamvay
      @styledbysamvay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Typically going platinum does require multiple sessions depending on your natural color, but considering your hair isn't that dark to begin with and was virgin hair, it doesn't sound like there's a reason why you couldn't have achieved it in one session. I'm not sure what she meant by "blaming your hair." And if it was blotchy, that typically would only happen if you have old color left in your hair or some type of mineral build up, or if her application was uneven. When is the last time you colored your hair?
      Luckily, toner isn't permanent, so it'll eventually fade and get lighter.

    • @Ascadians
      @Ascadians 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My hair was untouched for 6 years. She blamed my hair. I’ve gone plat over 15 times, always worked first time, no issues, no damage etc.
      Like.... if you can’t do my hair, you probably shouldn’t be touching hair... THATS how easy my hair is. It does anything you want.
      What product can lighten this toner? Nothing extreme! But like a shampoo or rinse you’d recommend? This crap hasn’t lightened up AT ALL unfortunately.
      She texted me a few hours ago and told me she was canceling my appointment now. She’s a coward who can’t even handle a very kind client expressing what they want.
      Sorry but she’s a dipshit without people skills, class, or common sense. Luckily we have yelp reviews!

    So happy to have found this vid. I have what I consider a #2 hair color, darkest brown before black, it has never been colored, and now that I am starting to see a few greys, I am considering getting my first color in my life....And I don’t know where to begin! I am guessing a foilyage?

    OMG I knew this woman that'd bleach all the hair and then go back in and do the lowlights... It looked really ridiculous 🤦
