- Wynter Floyd was raised in Compton, California, a city known for gang activity and violence. But this hasn't stopped Floyd from competing in barrel racing, a sport with few black women.
"There is a lot of gangs in Compton," said Jimmy Bernard Bright, Floyd's step-father. "If you on a horse, the gang members, they respect you." Watch as this Cowgirl of Compton changes stereotypes in the rodeo world and motivates others in her community to pursue their dreams.

Way to go cowgirl! I'm an old Indian cowgirl from the rez and I grew up doing rodeos. I know the work and costs involved in going to barrel races. Never lose sight of your dream and always keep riding. They're are rodeos and associations specifically for black cowboys and cowgirls too. Good luck in your rodeo endeavors Cowgirl!
Y’all better do y’all history, Mexicans and blacks were the first cowboys, this young lady is the example of true American western culture.
Yup! Not sure why people assume it was created by whites when the whole cowboy thing started by Mexicans and black people. There’s even different competitions in Mexico.
Mexicans have been vaqueros = cowboys since 1500s and whites learned in 1830s and blacks learned in 1865 after slavery was abolished. Vaqueros have been cowboys for 500 years and are the first cowboys to ride in America. Indians also rode horses back in the 1500s but the first cowboys were Mexicans. I got to this story a lil late but what an inspirational thing it truly is! This young lady and her Moma are more the norm than not, I assure you!!! And I grew up w a similar intro into this all consuming world of Barrel Racing . One piece of advice that the late Alison Powers, of Sonora, Texas, a former WPRA Texas Circuit Director and very special friend to me as a teen, shared with me that it didn’t matter what you pulled up to an event in, it’s what you pulled out of the trailer and what you did with it that did matter! She was sincere in that advice because at the local Jackpots-back before the “D”’era had started-it was common to see Ms. Alison in her Lincoln Continental pulling her Single horse Bruton”Easy Pull’”single axle trailer with her nice horse, Chicks Mr Maydeck headed to get a run in between rodeo’s!!! Hope Wynter and her Moma are still at it and doing well!!! Barrel racing can be your life if you want it to, and if you can dream about it, it can happen!!! Loved this!❤

Ride on the side of the horse the whole time like someone is shooting at you your chest should be leaning against it’s body when It takes the barrel use voice commands and a modify your saddle.

Why do I feel like crying? My ancestors were cowgirls and cowboys. First the Mexicans, then Black Americans.
