    If there were no electoral college, the people of just ONE AREA of the nation could actually choose the president.
    We NEED the electoral college. It is the only way for ALL people of our nation to be represented, and not just those of one area, or one large state.
    This also speaks to why, as the lady in the video spoke about, the Congress does not use the electoral college...we vote on Senators and Representatives...Congress...in smaller areas...congressional DISTRICTS.. Think about it.

      You have it backwards my friend! What do we do now? We sit around waiting for the votes in a few swing states who decide the election year after year! If you don't live in one of those states you are a spectator, not a voter! In most states, you won't even see an ad for president because your vote doesn't matter, whether you live in a red or blue state. If you live in Pennsylvania or Wisconsin the candidates are kissing your butt. If you live in Texas or California, they take you for granted! In fact, if you life in any of 44 states they take you for granted! With a popular vote, your vote would count just as much no matter where you lived. Candidates would have to care about you.

    This voting system in America is weird. Each vote should count and who gets the most wins like in all other democracies and not on who wins certain states. Americans can't even vote in a timely fashion and looks like a third world country when it comes to voting with corrupt practices given the nod.

    This “winner-take-all” system, unlike the Electoral College, is not mandated by the Constitution. States could choose to award their electoral votes *proportionally* to their statewide popular vote, ensuring that every vote in even reliably blue or red states mattered to the outcome. This can be changed without a constitutional amendment.

  • @Eluzian86
    @Eluzian86 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    The Electoral College basically means the States of the United States elect the President of the United States, because each State is a sovereign entity within the United States, similar to how most of the countriesof Europe are united in the European Union. So you can't get rid of the Electoral College without diminishing State sovereignty further to where each State becomes something more akin to counties within the country. It would no longer be the United States of America, but simply America. Also, the proportional composition of the Senate can only change on a State by State agreement.

    I'm fascinated by articles like this. First, there is no such thing as a 'popular vote.' Second, when you cast your ballot, you are selecting which parties' Electors you are sending to the Electoral College. You are not casting a vote for a particular candidate. The Electoral College is brilliant. Otherwise, the 3 largest states would pick the President and disenfranchise most of America.

    It was said right in the beginning that they chose to go against the popular vote because “there was no such thing as campaigning and they thought people would just vote for their local leaders....”. Yeah, well, that’s not the case anymore is it. So, amend the constitution, abolish the electoral college, let the candidates campaign and let the people vote. Period.

  • @niltomega2978
    @niltomega2978 ปีที่แล้ว

    Think about it. If the contest were to just win the popular vote, that would be an entirely different campaign strategy. Presidential candidates would only campaign in the most populated parts of the United States. There would be no need to campaign in the smaller states like Iowa or Maine. They would be ignored. THIS is why the electoral college was created to make sure ALL states have a say in the election. If states had no say in the elections, they would secede from the nation, which is why the electoral vote was created.
    The founders were VERY smart.

Membership will insure your state's electoral college votes go the the winner of the NATIONAL popular vote. This is the easiest way to get rid of the electoral college because it doesn't require a constitutional amendment. The 'electoral college' system is undemocratic and must be reformed before we can have a true Democracy where every vote counts.

    America has changed so much since the Constitution was written. It's not horse and buggy time anymore. The Constitution needs to reflect our lives as they are now and it needs to be updated to eliminate the electoral college. It simply isn't necessary anymore. Popular vote is the voice of the people. The more people you have speaking for us, the higher the likelihood for fraud to occur. The People vote and the person with the most votes wins. It's not complicated.
