This is one lady that never did enough credit for her voice. In my humble opinion she was one of the best singers in Country Music if not the all time best. And I don't say that lightly.
Whenever I need comfort I watch one of the video clips or listen to a record of Anita Carter and quickly am lifted up as if to heaven for a moment in time listening to her sweet voice. A beautiful angel with one of the greatest voices of our time. I can't help but wrap myself in the thrill of listening to her crystaline passionate renditions. I have and always will be partial to the beautiful Anita Carter. Loved her since age of 5. The title of "Appalachian Angel" is Anita Carter.
What a voice!!! I've only started listening to country music and I've started at the beginning and I'm so glad I did. What an amazing talent; the whole Carter family, blessed!
I've been to this concert in 1978. I was 14 and it was one of the milestones in my life. I remember when he said words "Tenesee free" and just by saying the word free there was a 5 minute standing ovation... He was more than just a musician, he brought hope to all of us behind the iron courtain.
I ditto wagadman's view> She is an angel and her voice is very comforting and it takes me to another place. She was the baby of the family so she was mainly backup vocals until she hit her late teens and she started to sing lead. June was so proud of her little sister, she always said Anita was blessed with the "pipes" and appreciated her lovely voice as did all of her family.
anita carter, legendary country music immortal AND SHE DIDN'T EVEN TRY ONE LITTLE TINY BIT; she just sang to be with her family she never cared about being a star
A friend dated June when she lived in Richmond and attended John Marshall High School. The Carters were on the "Old Dominion Barn Dance" on WRVA radio 1140 am.
It's tragic what RA did to her. She was already suffering from it when this was made. The puffiness in her face is from the Prednizone she was taking for it.
i saw ceclia bartoli recently, many people feel she is the greatest singer of all time male or female and she IS mind blowingly good but shes no anita carter
Theres something really mysterious as to why Anita didnt have better coverage, better material, and didnt record a truckload of music. I just dont get it, find a better country and or folk voice, cant be done. Someone should write a book about her.
@Jrebindixie Certainly one of them. My favorite female voices include the likes of Dame Joan Sutherland, Marilyn Horne, Maria Callas....and Anita Carter
AN ASTONISHING PERFORMANCE BY HER. SHE SHOULD HAVE RECORDED THIS AS A 45RPM SINGLE. (THAT LEAD GUITAR SUCKED; WHAT A TERRIBLE TONE, AND PLAYING.) NEVER SEEN HER HEAVY LIKE THIS BEFORE, BUT SHE STILL LOOKED GREAT, ESPECIALLY HER FACE, OF COURSE!
The country was communist hard core then, maybe Anita helped a little, not much really but I believe there is no such thing as not enough when you are an individual that does the right thing.
Johnny you heartbreaker, I didn’t know you broke Anita’s heart , I do now and feel so bad for Vivian and June now. And the aborted innocent baby , you almost made this secret go to the grave with you, I. Loved you so much but I feel different now. How can I forgive you without the knowledge from the Bible we must forgive as we r also forgiven . My heart is now broken

I agree!
I agree with you friend.
Anita just gives me chills with this song. How I wish they would have had her do more solo numbers in the concerts. Thank you johnnyfan.
Pure notes of an Angel.
She was so beautiful in every way.
No other woman even close.
Love Anita. Her voice is so perfect.
Greatest voice of all time.
Anita Carter was one of the most talented sopranos of her time, but was seldom recorded as a solo performer. Thanks for posting this rare clip.
There has never been a better female singer on The Grand Old Opry than Anita Carter..........
The best voice in the whole Carter Cash family empire.
I second that
And the prettiest.
The best female voice in country music.
One great song sung by probably the purest voice I have ever heard !!
The Greatest Female Country Singer Of All Time.
Tammy Linda Dolly Patsy
Melba Dolly Emmylou. ...
But your are right Anita
was just purer than all the rest...
@@kerryg100 You list some great ones but I put Anita at the top of the list, so pure and her range was amazing .

Isn't she wonderful? So beautiful, with the sweetest voice of them all.
Anita can hold a note so pitch perfect, solid and even - amazing. Cheers fae Bonnie Scotland.

Just beautiful!!
Awsome! she chills my spine every time I hear her sing. June had a more gutsy voice and was more of a comedian, but boy, oh boy, Anita had the pipes!

Yup!
This is just the greatest ever if only she had lived to an older age than 66 fate has a funny way of working
I think Marty is getting a great kick that we are watching this video.

She played bass on Chet's "Main Street Breakdown" in 1949.
Pretty voice.....much better than June....I like this song...A Marty Robbins favorite, too
Anita sure was the prettiest of all the sisters! Does anyone know who the lead guitarist was? He sure knew how to make that guitar twang razor sharp!
Bartoli is a great singer no doubt. Nobody can ever say "this person or that person is greater" as its subjective.
@Jrebindixie Certainly one of them. My favorite female voices include the likes of Dame Joan Sutherland, Marilyn Horne, Maria Callas....and Anita Carter

Marty WHO, she should have recorded it first!
Doing a great job on marty robbins hit
Could any other singer nail a Marty Robbins song?

You shouldn't spread rumours like this about people who've passed. I don't think it's fair as they can't defend themselves and their legacy
Her husband at the time was the lead guitarist, from Johnny Cash's band.
What the hell! I hope Marty didn't this horrible rendition of his song. She sings as bad as her brother-in-law Johnny.
Ann Green You're literally the only person who thinks Anita is a bad singer
That is just mean hearted, they are dead. Take a good look at yourself, Ann.
Obviously can’t tell a good voice, from a frog croaking
