Thank you Zack. Lot of people are freaking out about this. We have roofs over all our runs, all water and feed are inside, not even a wren can get into cages, I'm not freaking out.

I am so glad my birds are inside. Even when I take Lucy for a walk, we stay in the home area, and not walking where ducks and geese visit. The ducks and geese stay on the other side of the river from me. Only ones I have to worry about are the ones that might fly overhead. I am the only one allowed in the quail room.

Myshire and big producers are the most important ones to protect. Let's face it: If you've got 40 quail and have to cull them all in a worst case scenario, you could be back up to 100% in just a short time (a few months) by buying fresh hatching eggs. Bummer, but not the disaster that you would have if you had hundreds or thousands of birds to deal with. I'm just about to get started and I'll be doing everything indoors. Zack, you are a GREAT source of quail info. Thanks!!!

The biggest thing to do is not to try to look for it bc then you will find it at every turn. Good luck and see you in a few months

Thanks Zack. This gives me lots to think about. We put our layer chickens out in the chicken tractor daily, but likely will reduce this or eliminate it and keep them in the covered run/coop. So glad we are getting started on quail. We will likely make a foot bath for when we come home from feed stores/etc.

When I worked at the veterinarian I would spray the bottoms of my shoes before visits with people who had pets and before entering my home. It’s does help to prevent the spread any virus. Clean hands. And all around cleaning

Thanks for sharing your research with us! AI hasn’t been confirmed in our county or neighboring counties as of yet, but I have my aviary birds tarped up and other farm birds confined for now for good measure. Not freaking out, but definitely being observant and using smart preventative measures.

My quail hutches are attached to the outside wall of our garage. No way to bring them all inside. But we have plywood right on top of the cages and a metal roof over that as well as metal sides so no droppings can come in. Birds hang around outside, though. They clean up whatever bits of feed get on the ground when we clean trays out. We also have a hawk that hangs around and some owls. But nothing can get in, and I'm certain no droppings can get to them. We cover the doors at night with wooden covers that fit in the wire openings.
I covered our chicken run (chain link dog kennel) with chicken wire all around and tarps on several sides which we do for winter anyway plus it has a metal roof due to predators. I get an occasional sparrow or wren in there. Can't seem to close up everything enough for all of them to stay out. Chickens are far away from our quail, and hubby and I are the only caretakers. Not sure what else I can do but this all makes me really nervous.

I'm just starting but glad I have plans to completely cover my livestock tractors. I'm wondering, what happens with your pond after the geese are done moving for the year? Is there even a way to disinfect it? It lasts so long on surfaces, I wonder how long in the water?

    • @MyshireFarm

Try 50% water and 50% listerine(Yellow) mixture for any cleaning you need to do, I'd make sure it was dry before I allowed the Quail back into the cleaned area.
