    Using simple physics to achieve carrying heavier loads is something I've never seen elsewhere with motorized prosthetics.

      I feel like the biggest thing our friend Ian is proving here is that maybe we all got a bit carried away with trying to make "advanced" prosthetics when we could've been making much cheaper, simpler alternatives that also work much better at the same time. It blows my mind how barely functional some of these medically marketed prosthetics can be considering how outrageous the pricing can be at the same time, when Ian has been making way more functional prosthetics in his garage for these past few years for what I assume is considerably less money.

      @@patrickhector Something funny I noticed (since I'm a programmer) while working on car projects with my mechanic friend: as a guy who works with mechanical solutions, he praises the reliability of software over mechanics. Yet, I always say as a programmer, "No way! Mechanics are way more reliable than software!" Hahaha. I guess it depends on your perspective ;-) But I'd 100% take Ian's solution here over some of the slow, more digitally based prosthetics I've seen online.

      Honestly if i lost a hand right now I wouldn't use electronics I'd use a rope and pulley system or some kind of soft robotics. Especially because I'm training to be a welder and I don't think electronics would be happy with that lol.

      This is probably a case of "the correct number of fingers is the number you're used to" ngl, though maybe dropping the number to 3+thumb wouldn't be the worst idea for the sake of simplicity - as amazing as this hand is, it certainly doesn't take as full advantage of 4 fingers as a fully articulate bio hand does

    • @KamikazeWombat
      @KamikazeWombat 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      That's not a bad idea, especially for people who didn't grow up with a standard hand. Without the ability to individually move fingers, especially sideways, only 3 or 4 fingers may be easier to do. Although, I would guess other than reducing the number of parts having bigger sturdier fingers would only be useful to people who would regularly be abusing the hand alot. Like a blacksmith or something.
      Hell, for a blacksmith having a metal hand may be better than bio hands! lol

    I love your dedication to this project. I have no need for it, but I grew up around WW2 and Korean War veterans who were happy to have the very limited claw-type prosthetic. One of my Grandfather's friends had both hands blown off in combat (he always said that it was a bank-robbery accident to avoid having to talk about what really happened).
    I wonder if anodizing would be an improvement to long-term durability. Having the parts made undersized to allow for the treatment (and possibly eliminating the need to file) could allow for a kit that only needs to be anodized at home to the color preference of the end-user.

Holding something heavy on the back of fingernails seems uncomfortable, but if you're designing those parts it makes sense to continue to make them good at grabbing on both the "pad" and "nail" side of the distal tips! I know you've gotten all sorts of "go go gadget" "add a wire stripper pinky!" IDK if the industry has moved on or perfected the affordability od Cerakote, but last I read about the stuff (roughly 4 years ago) Durakote did most of what Cerakote could, but was simpler, didn't come in as many colors, and thus, was cheaper.
    A point of criticism, though: Your video is far too quiet. Looking up the metadata for this with right click>stats for nerds, it's over 18db quieter than baseline. TH-cam only compensates for videos that are too loud compared to baseline, but YOUR video (at least this one) is about 3x quieter than it should be, which is a pain when there's only so much someone can crank the volume up on their end.

    Curious if I've thought about using zinc parts since they self lubricate or would they not be either cost effective or strong enough for ur application

    Wow, your mechanical ability is awesome. You should be funded already. But our society places importance on sports players as opposed to people doing real things.

    I know you had trouble with marketing the prosthetic as a medical device, but is it possible to instead market the kits as novelty, hobby, prop, or toy products instead?

    What kind of coating thickness does Cerakote need? I.e., does that require a decrement in part thickness anticipating the coating, and potentially a doubling in part versions for coated and noncoated?

      There was a meeting about that topic. The thickness varies by applicator. But plan for 0.0035"/side. So where the p1 and p2 cross (4 surfaces) , 0.020" will net you 0.0025" ×2 of clearance for the parts to pass each other and not drag. Rn I'm thinking that it's probably going to be 1 maybe 2 applicators that get the project, where you would send your fitted parts to them with colors. We'd have an expected price. And it would just be a line item expense. It's still super early, it might not be as finicky as I'm anticipating, but better to be on the lookout for this kind of issue to arise than not.
