Many people can Copy others. But then it is playing mechanically. I was that way with Violin for decades as I was taught to play the notes exactly as on the sheets. No personal emotion. Guitar allowed me to use my emotions. Then I went back to violin and played it in my Voice. People like Master Tomo helped me get thru that. Thank You so very much.
@@didamnesia3575 No. I am that old it wasn't thought of yet. LOL.. We were forced taught to Sight Read and only play the notes as written. I was in violin and orchestra from age 8. That was one of my issues with reading music and playing guitar. It is so programmed that C4 is 2nd finger A string (2nd string). Took me 10 months to break that. We were taught to be machines.
Thank you for sharing! I think copy too fast and not reviewing enough. You can add a little emotion with writing music too! That's teachers job to make students shine! Thank you so much!
@Jack.Waters I used to work at a music store, one of the violin teachers there used the Suzuki method, her students were awful, one day she got weird and had her husband come down to lay down the law on us so we fired her on the spot. She didn't even know I had been playing trumpet for 25 years at that point in my life and thought I was just some kid behind the counter. I was 32 with a baby face. Apparently, learning by rote pitch matching not only effects the music but the brain too! Anyways, that's one of my stories about an insufferable violin teacher. They are not all knowing. You should get back into it and nix the classical stuff for something else. Tons of bands would love a violinist that can lay down simple backups and occasional solo
@@didamnesia3575 ah the classics. That’s how we get melodies on guitar instead of that boring 4 chords and repeat 50 times of rock/roll. Yea, I play now for me. I go into the woods on a hill over looking a local lake. The sound comes down from the trees upon them.
I can remember lining up for a soccer match in Kathmandu in the 70 s and guys kept pushing in after a while i got a bit angry grabbed the guy who just pushed in around the shoulders and heaved him as hard as I could, I didnt move him even half inch and he just turned around and smiled at me. I love Nepal a special place a special people.

Tomo, thanks for helping to make my journey from 4 decades of trumpet to guitar/bass so much fun. Concussions ended me playing the Mendelssohn concerto and being a soloist, but the music is still there even though I can't take IC pressure anymore. I still refer to my picking hand as my trumpet hand though... you know what they say though, don't fret over your left hand 😂 (dad joke) Luckily, a guitar teacher I know locally had an opening but it is weird paying for lessons again!
You're very welcome! No matter what... you can enjoy playing guitar in many ways! Thank you for sharing! Free is so dangerous! I rather pay for any professional help! Thank you so much!
@TomoFujitaMusic I agree, a good teacher, and he's great, is worth every penny. We went to NAMM together about 16 years ago so he and I get along really well. Much better vibe and feeling than what I had experienced before as a young man.
This was awesome. Stevie Ray Vaughan is in my top 10 list of my favorite guitarists. I never saw him live, but I did see Jimmie Vaughan live and I met him. Cheers! ✌️🎸
@TomoFujitaMusic Here is my top 10 list of my favorite guitarists. 1) Eric Clapton. 2) Jeff Beck. 3) Jimmy Page. 4) Jimi Hendrix. 5) Chuck Berry. 6) Chet Atkins. 7) Scott Gorham. 8) Stevie Ray Vaughan. 9) Carlos Santana. 10) Duane Allman.
Your how to jam 5 tips video from a while ago inspired me to get better at jamming because I felt like I couldnt improvise. (I know the A minor pentatonic scale like the back of my hand, but I was very stiff) Any ways so Im learning the A minor triads right now for each 3 string sets and Im gonna try to incorporate it into my jamming with the A minor backing track
I just made 7 tips version from that video... then I realized I already made it on 2023! I just made it as new version last week. You can do it! Not about scales chords...how to what to use when! Less is better. When you learn Am triad. Think deeply R b3 5 / b3 5 R / 5 R b3.. and move minor triad to Major triad while thinking these intervals. Don't think too much shapes. Don't use any backing tracks! Practice chords, rhythm guitar and record your own backing thing. So you learn!
This is great as always. Love how you point out concepts instead of copy paste playing. I play in a jam band with some friends. Sometimes we go on one chord vamp jams. When we're in a minor key or modal minor, I feel like I always end up sounding like the blues. Any advice on how to play minor tonality lead guitar without sounding like the blues?
Thank you so much! Copy and show things ... too easy! For jam band, you need record all your rehearsals. Do you? If not, that's only way to improve improvisation. You are playing too much blues (minor pentatonic shape lick) Jam on Fm7.. and don't touch any note above 13th fret and don't play minor penta vertical shape/notes from 654321 strings. So your new phrases are only one string or two strings. Play more 123 set strings and avoid vertical shale shapes!
@@TomoFujitaMusic wow this is such great advice! I do record our rehearsals. It's both helpful and humbling. Your advice really resonates with me. Especially limiting myself and not playing vertically or above the 13th fret. Such a great idea to limit that space. That's where I often go into classic rock/blues reflexes as I play quicker and with more intensity. Thank you again for taking the time to respond. You are a masterful teacher and a wonderful person. 🙏
