To tell the truth I went from cricket to baseball,I felt baseball was tougher to understand even after watching it lots of time,only reason I understood it was because I was playing ootp21 which I had fun playing

You should do a breakdown of that Aussie bowler getting 6 wickets in 4 overs in The Ashes! And talk about how INSANE that is, especially in test cricket (can last up to 5 days). Guy basically got 6/10 of the batting team out in 24 pitches, playing a format where a team can spend all day (typically more than 50 overs/300 pitches) batting before getting 10 outs.

Something I've never seen before... notice how the last batter, Clarke, came in with 32 runs? This is because Clarke was forced to "retire hurt" (injured) earlier in the innings, but apparently was OK enough to come back in and bat after the 9th wicket fell. I honestly have never seen that before, but apparently that's a thing that can happen! (retire hurt does NOT mean you're out, but if that batter absolutely can't continue, a team can end their innings after just nine outs instead of the customary ten.)

Sad story but true, Phillip Hughes was killed in 2014 playing for South Australia. He was marked down as ''retired hurt'' but the controlling authority instructed the score keeper to change the scorebook to ''not out''. This is the only time a controlling authority has interferred in a game of professional cricket in 200 years.

(The 2008 Stanford SuperStars match that happened to be on ESPN2) I didn't REALLY get into cricket until about 2011 or 2012 with the Caribbean Twenty20 series that was on what was known as ESPN3 at the time. I've since picked up a Willow TV subscription.

For the americans watching, Trent Boult is in New Zealands international side, a truly great bowler who is basically an automatic lock for any game, any condition. He also bats 11, which is dead last, essentially the (International) team is saying "Boult is our worst batter" so for him to smack a six off his second ball under that much pressure was a magnificent sight.
How about Lockie Ferguson's batting ? He recently hit a six off the second last ball.
@@JonSnow-pi6jb Lockie's a bit better than Boulty but not by much, depending on the team selection he'll bat 9 or 10, but again, he's a world class bowler, he's not expected to make large runs.
Also, funnily enough Boult actually has the world record for most sixes hit as a no11 batsman in test cricket haha

I got into cricket after watching the 2010 documentary Fire in Babylon about the West Indies cricket team beating England in 1984. It’s a great movie with a great soundtrack and I’m glad other Americans will hopefully start to get into this great sport.
As a New Zealander who loves cricket, i've gotten into nhl and baseball over the last few years (the nhl is fucking awesome). so cool watching new sports, and glad to see americans (and others) getting exposure to cricket.
It is crazy how often cricket comes down to the last or last few balls! Especially for the Black Caps (New Zealands national team) in ODIs (One Day Internationals, 50 overs ea side, so 600 balls bowled). So tense but soooo good!!!
Test cricket is over 100 hundred years old, the amount of countries playing x amount of tests in over 100 years is A LOT. There have only been 2 tied test series

Great breakdown Jomboy, NZ cricket fan here and its great seeing the game being explained so well to a wider audience. Starting following baseball because of your breakdowns so I hope we can get a few converts over to cricket from the US.
In case anyone wants to know why the second ball was not faced by the new batsman, on the first ball of the over that was the high fly ball before being caught, there was enough time for the batsmen to run between the wickets. They therefore ‘crossed (ran past each other) before the ball was caught’. The new batsmen therefore stands at the non-facing end. This is advantageous as the person who will face the next ball should be more up to game speed and better able to deal with the next ball/pitch. Except of course, he wasn’t…

@@Ibangedmatt Wides, or no balls (a no ball is any other illegal ball, which can include too high on the fly, too high off the bounce, bouncing twice before the batsman, or bowlers foot being too far forward when bowling, as the most common ones) are all rebowled and basically there is a free run for the batting side. It doesn't count to the total
why the new batter already has 30 runs in? I thought if out never bat again?

The thing about (ahem cough cough) *Trent Boult is he's an amazing Bowler, this was not expected of him, which makes it even more fantastic. It also probably led to an easier ball being thrown, as the bowler didn't expect Boult to be able to get this.

Imagine tripping over your words about cricket.
Imagine getting 3 wickets in an over only to get hit for a six on the last ball by Trent Boult. How horrible this would have been for the bowler.
And the thing is that actually Trent Boult is the kind of bowler you bring in to bat in this sort of situation actually because he CAN REALLY hit it - he doesn't so much bat for a long time, and he doesn't usually just poke it into the gap for a single run but he's known for being able to really slam the cover off it.

I may not know much but I do know Trent Boules has no right to be that cool after walk off winning on the last bowl.
"Lovely" Trenty (as he's affectionately known), is a clutch player. International standard swing/seam bowler, absolute madman in the field (check some of his catches!), and as this clip shows, no slouch at scoring a few quick runs at the death (end of the innings).
He's a bit of a national hero in NZ.
If you fancy doing it, I think a breakdown of the difference between spin and pace bowlers (with some footage of the best of each) would be really interesting for your American audience. Knowing nothing about baseball, the way you explained in your previous videos what the pitcher and catcher were doing in terms of tactical signals, spin/fade, and positioning within the strike zone was an absolute revelation!

Love the cricket content, and the fact that you're being noticed by the broadcasters in my hemisphere.
Just a technical point. If the bowler bowls a wide, it is counted as a run, but the batsman doesn't get credit for it. It is marked by the scorer as an "extra". When you look at the score card, you'll see all the batsmen listed in order, and then under all of them, the extras.
Apparently, the third highest scorer for England this year in test cricket (the 5 day version, so think of it as marathon cricket) is extras.

Underrated aspect of this: Ed Nuttall, the bowler bowling this last over, conceded 29 runs off a single over earlier in the match. If he'd won it with this final over, it would have been an incredible comeback.

A subtle insight is that Clarke appeared to have 32(12) when he came out. Which probably meant he batted earlier in the innings, then retired hurt, then came back in as the last batter in a last ditch attempt for his team to win - and they did.

Hey Jomboy, glad to see you're getting into cricket since I grew up watching it alongside baseball. I was thinking you should do some breakdowns about some historic moments throughout cricket history, specifically international cricket. Obviously you do you in terms of what content you'd like to create but there are some really special and interesting moments I'd love to see you breakdown.

"and a new batter named Boult has come in, and we're at the back end of the batting order" Boults been at the back end of most International matches the Black Caps have play for the last 10 years. He's slogged a few 6s in his day, so of course he's the one to step up and bring the game home.
His experience of being in the same position as a bowler and therefore knowing exactly what Nuttall was thinking would have given Boulty a nice advantage here.

I'm a Canadian and there is a small but enthusiastic cricket league out here on the west coast in Victoria. I knew nothing about cricket but after meeting some people I somehow found myself playing and fell in love with the game in my early 20's. Terrific sport and some great traditions....like between each teams innings there is a tea time break with beer and sandwiches for everyone! That was during the 50 over version on the weekends. A second league played 20/20 in the evenings or just 16 overs depending on the sunlight and afterwards we'd head to our sponsor pubs. Great memories.

it's funny that you'd say "why don't they just throw an unhittable ball", this exact situation happened in a match between new zealand and australia in 1981, new zealand needed a 6 to win, and the australian bowler rolled the ball underarm down the pitch to stop the batsman from hitting it properly. people are still upset about it

Commentators might say a catch is "taken for the wicket" but you'd usually just say they were caught out.
Oh also the batter doesn't score from a wide, just the team does. So happy to see more cricket content on this channel!

@@wyattmund9286 Yes, those are called "leg byes" - just like "byes" except off the batter's body. ("Byes" are runs the batter takes after he's missed it, it misses him but the wicketkeeper/catcher also misses it.)
They were caught, but where? slips, gully, silly point, extra cover, silly mid on, silly mid off, caught and bowled, cows corner, long mid on/off, deep cover, short mid on/off, etc etc
Gotta do Peter Siddle hatrick on his birthday test match. 1 of many legendary moments in Aussie cricket. On his birthday, in the ashes when they were haveing a terrible series. You will get a chance to explain the 3rd umpire situation as well!
They weren't having a terrible series at that point though. It was at the end of the first day of the first test.

Be care careful - if your partner (the other batter) regularly hit twos or threes, that can be extremely tiring!
Will not be easy though, you have to wear lot of gear and protection and run with that plus bat, plus you might survive t20 doing back and forth but in odi and test will not be easy. You need serious stamina in them formats.

Fun video. FYI in cricket we do say 'caught', and that is the official name for the method of dismissal where the fielder catches it. Commentators just like to say 'taken' because it's fun when the batsman hits it to say 'edged!' or 'in the air!' when the catch might be about to be taken cleanly, and then say 'taken!' when it is.
"Taken" is a shortened form of "the catch has been taken" - as opposed to dropped.
Both Sodhi and Trent Boult are regulars in New Zealand teams

Greatly appreciate your videos explaining Cricket in Baseball terms. Having said that there is no comparison as to which game is more exciting, technical, statistical, etc. For one the fielders don't have gloves so even a simple catch in baseball is not so simple in Cricket.

Behind my house growing up, we had a huge field with 3 retention basins and one of them is used as a cricket field. It’s wild, for a town in Central IL, the amount of people that come is insane, you can hear the roars from the house. There was one guy we always watched, we called him Big Papi and that man hit bombs.
We have a large amount of people from India in town, if that makes more sense to why cricket is so big in this one small area each weekend ha
As an Indian kid my whole life up till now has revolved around cricket. We played it in childhood in streets and backyards. Later on I started playing cricket on college, district and played once at state level and never continued due to my family. Then I found your channel and understood so much about baseball. I want to try playing baseball and hit bombs over the fences.

Jimmy seems to have missed to explain why the last batsman who came at 9 wickets already had 12 balls faced and 32 runs scored. For those who are confused, this happens when a batsman gets hurt earlier and is now feeling ok to continue playing after some rest.
