And the post match interviews were amazing. Often when a player does the 'it was my teammates' it seems disingenuous. He seemed so humble and genuine though.
I was hoping he would have got the last wicket. It’s deadset a fantastic result for test match cricket. I’d love to see the Windies build from this just abit of belief goes a long way. This is also why test match cricket is the king. T20 has nothing on the 5 day game

The story the other way if Smith had hit the winning runs was also interesting as after the first innings the knives were out. Still batted through the innings though which was a fair effort.

@@ChuckwaldMartin I actually agree with the sentiment that Test cricket needs a strong West Indies. The balance of power in cricket has never really shifted away from the England-India-Australia triad since the West Indian greats of the 1980s. My beloved New Zealand have been good/great but they go unrecognized in the cricket world, perhaps because of a lack of money - for whatever reason they're just not a drawcard. The same is true of South Africa (when they can even be bothered sending a full strength team on tour). But because of the history of the West Indies, the legacy of guys like Garner, Holding, Lloyd, Sir Viv Richards, and later Brian Lara, etc. might just be enough that a strong 2020s WI team might just get the cricket world thinking a little more globally again.
I'm so fortunate. I'm so fortunate that as an American, who has long lived cricket, that my favorite content creator just happened to suddenly also love cricket. Every so often a video comes out to remind of just how fortunate I am.
There's really no substitute for watching a game.
T20 cricket was designed to be faster, with more action, and to fit into a 3 hour broadcasting window.
It's a great sport, filled with tactics, drama, precision, power and finesse.
And because International competition is the norm, there isn't really an off-season. It's always summer somewhere!
Even as an Aussie this Loss didn't feel bad because what an amazing story for Joseph and just an incredible win for test cricket itself.
It was also really great to see many of the SCG spectators showing their appreciation of what was a tremendous effort.
I love learning baseball terminology from the cricket breakdown; "dotting the corner" is such a perfect expression for a great pitch, in the same way that "top of off stump" is a chef's kiss for a bowler.

Bluey is a pretty spectacular kids’ show given that both the kid and the parents like it. Parents watching Cocomelon is like some Clockwork Orange torture.

As a cricket fanatic and a Jomboy fan, I really enjoy seeing a mash up of two of my favorite things.
Also enjoyable about this - an Aussie commentator had ripped the Windies for being pathetic and said they weren’t strong enough physically. Post match interview included the Windies captain showing his muscles and saying “is this strong enough for you??” Lots of fun.
Such an awesome story. Even as an Australian I couldn't help but be excited by this story. Good for the game of cricket young teams like this showing they can beat the best in the world.

This was only the second Test match (the international 5-day format) Shamar Joseph had ever played. His first was the previous match between Australia and the West Indies where he got 5 wickets in his first innings, including getting Steve Smith out on Shamar’s very first ball.
So Shamar has gotten 5+ wickets in 2 of the 4 bowling innings (or 4 half-innings in baseball) he has played so far. Incredible stuff

Man when I lived in NYC I would have loved playing cricket with Jimmy and Jake. As someone who loves Yankees and cricket it’s a fun combo
You would have been really pleased if you had attended the T20 cricket game at Yankee stadium that was played betweeen teams led by Shane Warne and Sachin Tendulkar almost ten years ago. Here in Oz we have seen the famous Sydney Cricket Ground beautifully converted into an MLB field ffor the season opener (LAD / ARI) back in 2014. Vision of the conversion under MLB supervision can be found.
That ramp shot was pretty cool, it's something you can never really see in baseball because of field positioning and equipment. I'm sure you can get the ball going a lot further if you can add momentum like that instead of having to counter the momentum like in baseball.
One of the best shots I've ever seen tbh. The skill of Smith to play it, let alone have the guts to do so under those circumstances.
Joe Root is also excellent at it. Only because he, and Smith, are extremely skilled.
There IS no analogy of the ramp stroke, or any other shot that does not go into the quadrant immediately in front of the batter, between the two sports. Most commonly the ramp is played as a deflection shot with a relatively still bat. No crossover insofar as batting skills given there is no deflection in baseball. Consider that the two bats are made to produce different results. Diamond sports are also unique in that the bunting of the ball is often used offensively.
You can't swing at it though so it's completely momentum based. So no, it doesn't go a lot further, A well timed ramp will generally be a decent amount shorter than a lofted on-drive (which is the most common straight hit for six. If the batter is at 12 o clock, this goes between 4 and 5

I enjoy watching these breakdowns but I still don’t understand enough about the different forms and rules and it is a lot harder to find time to watch sports that are on during weirder time windows. Jomboy runs his own business and his job is about watching and discussing sports in large part. But if you don’t do that, harder to watch a sport you don’t know much about during non standard watch hours. And once baseball starts, that’s about all the time I have for sports for over half the year
@@wwpjd28 its a pretty simple game at its core and once you understand you can enjoy these breakdowns without needing to follow cricket.
@@thejesusaurus6573 I already enjoy the breakdowns quite a bit. But for actually getting into the sport, the different forms of scoring and overall game format are definitely a bit confusing.
@@wwpjd28 There aren't different forms of scoring unless I'm misinterpreting you. You get 1 run every time the batters swap positions, 4 for a ground rule double, 6 for a home run. That is the same across all formats.
As for the game format, you really just need to know test cricket or limited overs cricket in test cricket everyone on a team bats until there are 10 outs, then they change sides. In limited overs cricket everyone bats until there are 10 outs OR the limited amount of overs is reached. That's all really. Limited overs games are designed to be much shorter. That affects HOW you play the game in terms of strategy but it has no effect at all on the rules of the game. They are the same.

Joseph wasn't even going to go to the ground because of his toe.
What I found impressive was that he bowled 10 overs in a row before the lunch break (and then a couple after), and at the end of those 10 overs he was bowling faster than he did at the beginning.
Very unusual in modern cricket to see a fast bowler bowl that many overs in a row.

I grew up hating the West Indies because we (Australia) could NEVER beat them. Nobody could ever beat them. They were untouchable throughout the 80s and early 90s. Sure we'd pinch the occasional victory here and there, but we'd ultimately get soundly beaten over the series. After Australia finally beat them in 1995 (in the Caribbean, no less), the West Indies began their steady decline into virtual nobodies, and it was only as an adult that I truly appreciated what a powerhouse team they were, and how privileged I was to witness the likes of Richards, Greenidge, Lara, Richardson, Ambrose, Walsh, Bishop, etc. in their pomp.
It's been kinda sad seeing the WI decline over the last 20 or so years, and I really hope this win helps them start to turn it around. I fear that it won't happen unless their cricket board comes to the party and starts paying their players what they deserve. Too many good players have shied away from test cricket to play in the big T20 leagues because of the big bucks on offer. I love all forms of cricket, but test cricket is the best and must survive.
The universal consensus in Australia from everyone I spoke to, friends, family, work mates, is that this was a good result. No one wants to see the WI beat up on forever and our Aussies need to be humbled now and then. Plus one of the best eras of cricket was when the WI were powerhouses. Need more of this.

I am in Melbourne and haven't taken much notice of the cricket but I had to take my car somewhere and when I jumped in, put the radio on, there was instant palpable excitement from commentators as I got the good luck to hear the last 3 overs on radio. It was amazing. The West Indies were once a mighty almost unbeatable team and it was great to hear them win.

A stat and info for you Jomboy. From the bowling crease (where the ball is release) to bowling crease at the other end (where the batter generally stands) is 58 feet. Similar to Baseball 60 feet 6 inches.
Joseph is bowling over 90mph and the ball bounces on the ground.
As a batter in cricket if you get hit by the ball it is your fault.

The cricket episode of Bluey instantly became my favorite episode. And I have Jimmy and cricket breakdowns to thank for that.
It was so great to see the Calypso Kings giving we Aussies a dose of what they gave us long ago when they had a veritable production line of greats like Shamar. People forget too soon the greatness of the men from the Carribbean and what they gave to the game when they were virtually unbeatable. They are the fourth oldest Test status team and deserve the respect they have earned.
As an Aussie I love this from the Windies. They made cricket exciting in the 90's/early 00's. More people watch when teams like this find flight. Here's to hoping for more excitement

I grew up watching the West Indies being a dominant team in the 80s/90s, so this was both amazing and frustrating to watch at the same time. They had some of the coolest guys in those teams. You couldn't hate them. They also have one of the best logos in sport. Shamar Joseph needs a movie made about him when he's done. Such an awesome story. I love that you mentioned attacking the stumps of the lower order batters! Probably the thing that annoys me the most is letting bowlers get cheap runs by trying to bounce them out instead of hitting the stumps.

In the 1960s Australia and West Indies played a tie (both teams dismissed for the same score after two completed innings each), one of only two ties in the history of Test cricket and this had the potential to become the third.

As an aussie i was so happy sri lanka won. It was so deserved and made for great watching. The aussies are no1 in the world and have won almost every test match this season so it wasnt like we were desperate for a win. S.L are second from the bottom in the team rankings so to see some young sri lankain guy with a smashed toe, who only started pro cricket 2 years ago and lives in a remote tiny village completly win the game was absolutely awesome.

A little terminology for you, Jomboy. When a specialist batter is protecting a lower order batter, as Smith is doing with Hazlewood here, it’s called “farming the strike”. You keep the tail-ender away from the bowling as much as possible.
The saying you were looking for was:
"Hit the top of off-stump"

Just before that, Smiths hand movements were about how he could have played the shot better. He is saying to himself that he should have opened the face of his bat more to find the gap
Let me see if I understand test cricket properly: a test match lasts for 5 days, consisting of 2 innings per team, with a maximum of 90 overs a day (so presumably 450 overs over the course of the match). An over is 6 legitimate bowled balls. Team A, who bats first, will bat until they’re bowled out and get 10 wickets, seeing as many overs as they can. The captain of Team A may end their inning early to enforce Team B to bat, again presumably since the match ends after 5 days this is a tactic to ensure a draw doesn’t occur, and that’s called innings forfeiture.
A test match lasts up to 5 days. It can be finished before then of course. Ending an innings early is called declaration, not forfeiture. Although innings can be forfeited which means skipping the innings, a rare occurrence.
your understanding is certainly good enough that you'll be fine to watch cricket but a couple items. Its actually a MINIMUM of 90 overs in a day played over 3 sessions that are about 2 hours long each. Team A bat until they LOSE 10 wickets, the fielding team are said to have TAKEN the wickets (not important in terms of understanding, but that is the terminology). Team A can "declare" (end their innings) at any point, and yes the only reason to do so is really if you've scored an awful lot of runs and youre concernd the match may not finish in time, so declaration is FAR more common in the second innings, declaring in the first innings would be strange unless a team scored like 500+ and was expecting a lot of rain
Pretty much! Great understanding. As with this match (and most in Brisbane) weather comes into play, so Australia declared early thinking that a cyclone would make landfall north of the city on day 4 or 5 and the rain would call for the match to be abandoned.

Would have been nice to have spend a minute or two explaining what the West Indies actually are. It's kinda an archaic term for the Caribbean island nations + Guyana. (Of course most of them were former British colonies because it's cricket). So they're actually multiple small and not very rich countries working together to field a relatively competitive team in world cricket (even if they've declined a lot in the modern period). The team that they've fielded in this test match is very inexperienced and not a first-choice side because a lot of their better players have taken franchise-cricket contracts in the t20 leagues to earn more money.
Historically from the 80s-90s, West Indies were basically the US Mens National Basketball team of Test Cricket. They destroyed teams for fun with bat and ball, but especially with their bowlers. Everyone feared them home or away.
Australia on the other hand are a juggernaut in world cricket. Incredibly wealthy, a much bigger population, a near impossible to beat in home conditions, especially in test cricket. Massive David v Goliath game.

You need to do a breakdown of South Africa vs Cape Verde in the African Cup of Nation quarterfinal penalty shootout. The South Africa goalkeeper saves four of the five penalties. Just before the shootout he asks the coach what side number 6 of Cape Verse will kick, they reply left and he saves that one to win the game by going left
