Brett, from what my native american friends have told, namely navajo, those were drawn by the young braves who were sent out for their first "spirit walk" when they came of age. Tradition is/was that when they reached a certain age they were sent out on their own to camp for 3 days with nothing but the clothes on their back, a hunting knife, and their spirit bag around their neck and were to live off the land and what the great spirit provided. And at the end they were to leave a record of their experience painted on the rock, either their spirit animal, spirit guide, a remnant of their dreams, ect. They could have used peyote or from lack of water, sleep and food... it is anyone's guess.
The drawings are so fascinating . I am like you. I wonder what peoples came before us and what they saw . Like the stage stop. Hard life was normal in the 1860-1880 going west before railroads. Look forward to your Butterfield Trail ride .stay safe.

Dang great episode Brett. Beautiful territory. Glad you got to share it with your favorite hound and thanks for taking us along. The petroglyphs of the horse riders were neat. Did get the creepy feeling of being watched on this end, even on video. Probably drug runner or mules. Good to have old 1911 for reassurance. Awesome video.
I thought so too, @36:14. Short front legs, long back legs, large teeth, maybe a tail . . . pointy things above head may not have been part of the head . . . swamp feet or wearing moccasins😊
Love how you sneak a picture of your beautiful wife into your video. I know you get a kick out of it because she doesn't like it...😮 Your bad my friend...😂😂great video
I am a 75 yr old female that would love to go exploring again. But with my age and being female I don't think it would be wise to do! Don't think I could change a tire anymore and I don't like guns too much. But thank you for the video!
Petroglyphs are in fact a Native American written language. They can tell tell of events, ceremonies and travels. Since this is near a spring it was probably a communal gathering place. Since the Indians probably saw horses for the first time and they recorded what they saw. Many of the symbols are also based on Indian sign language. In order to understand the meaning you would have to understand the universal Indian sign language and understand the culture and think like an Indian. Interpretation today is difficult to say the least. As a native American it really irks me when they call petroglyphs rock art. It is not art. White archaeologist are not much help either. Petroglyphs record droughts, events, battles with other tribes, accidental deaths and location of water. The Indians had many Gods that they prayed to for various things. I saw a few different Gods on the rocks.
Hey, partner, I love your shows, ma'am. They relax me so much. I'm 67 years old. I live in the panhandle, Florida. I'm gonna come out and see you 1 day. Keep up the good work. We load the petroglyphs and the other stuff Also
The panels get better with altitude, implying levels of skill in communication. I see a rite of passage that has evolved. Someone had leisure time, life being less of a struggle for survival.

Hope the HH rendezvous went well. I was hoping I could get my friend to show up (who received a life-time achievement award from safari international) but they were up here in Washington visiting so the timing was bad this time. I keep telling him to hook up with you to get himself a lion. They are now in Scottsdale. I love seeing these petroglyphs and especially getting glimpses of native cacti (I'm also known as Cactus Jack) not the opuntia & cholla but the echinocereus and other round clustering ones that are much rarer varieties. God Bless!
Wonderful episode, it’s so interesting to see the stage stop and the petroglyphs right there together. Do you have a recommendation on a book for the Butterfield stage trail?? Up here in Utah, I so enjoy going out and exploring and finding petroglyphs and ruins, just to wonder what these people were thinking and doing. Thanks again…
My wife and I ran a campground at Roosevelt lake once that was built on the site of a native burial ground. Walking around alone there I got the distinct feeling of being watched, and caught furtive movements out of the corner of my eyes. It was very eerie.
I watch a channel every now and then by lost history channel and he's been doing a thing about the squatter-man. I bet you've seen some of the same drawings and petroglyphs. Good little video
I know what you mean by it always feels good! Woohoo! I always feel that way when I leave Phoenix and head to the mts of Flagstaff! It feels so freeing! I love it too!❤
The petroglyphs are very interesting especially the crocodile. I think a thousand years ago there was a whole lot more water there so that having crocodiles would not be unusual. The people that were there could have been Pleuboins or navajos. I really don't know but I'm going to look it up. and there are interpretations for all these illustrations
All those lines in the stone remind Mt of a motorcycle trip a buddy and I made. We went from where I use to live to Hocking hills state part. No clue where we were going but an abandoned gas station had a pile of maps in the front window. I took a picture, a crappy one because of the angle and reflection in the glass, but damn if it didn't pan out.
The lightning bolt being a universal symbol, I like to think that instinct brought you to this place in time to brave the elements. Is that the womenfolk down among the cottonwoods?

Very interesting video, thanks for sharing it! Have to wonder, you said you had your .45 1911 with you, but we don't see it as you are climbing around the rocks and brush. Were you carrying it concealed or is it back in your 4x4? I always carried a S&W 59 (9mm) in my wilderness wanderings of my younger years. Because I got it cheap and had no better option or extra cash back then. Now retired, just a little older than your own good self, my choice would also be my .45 1911. Bought me a leather reproduction of a WW2 Tanker holsters, will give that a try for getting the gun up above the brush and debris.
There are videos on the web that I've seen about rock art very similar to what you've recorded here. Some of those people refer to this art as "Stickman on Stone". Pretty interesting, they've been found all around the globe.

Brett, another fun and amazing video. If you would, what ATV Brand is that you used? I’m asking because I’m in the hunt for one. The Can Am Defender Max has caught my eye. I drove a Polaris General around trails near Lake Conconully in WA this past weekend. It was fun but that ATV WAS too noisy. Your ATV seemed much quieter than the one I drove. Onward and upward my friend!
I agree with you about finding likely places to stop for the night. I'm 65 now, and ever since I was in my late teens I have looked for quiet, out of the way spots to stop for the night, rather than staying in a motel. Most of that fancy, high-tech camping gear people take with them really isn't necessary and you learn a lot about the country you're passing through that way.
I noticed those prickly pear fruits all around you! Nice little sweet fruity snack lol! Really cool video got to see and learn about some stuff not too far from here in Odessa, TX!
