Dum Dum Girls have recently become one of my fave bands. I love Dee Dee's singing. And she has a rare talent for song writing, imo, including a gift few have for writing & delivering compelling vocal melodies & harmonies consistently. Not easy to do. Dee Dee mentions here their producer, Richard Gottehrer. From a Dum Dum Girls article I learned a young Gottehrer co-wrote the song "My Boyfriend's Back," a 1963 hit for The Angels - which was the first pop single I ever bought, at age 7, way back in 1963 (well, I asked my Mom to buy it for me after hearing it on radio & seeing it in a local store). Odd how fifty+ years later, Gottehrer is STILL part of my musical life, currently producing one of my fave bands ever!
Isn't it telling that KEXP has 100x better production on live performances than the Tonight Show? Even though Letterman definitely had many times the budget and equipment. Love you guys, you're the best of U.S. public radio!
My guess on the sunglasses is that yes , it is bright in there. Televised events or stage shows are always lit very well. The other possibility is that they are just nervous & use the sunglasses to deal with the stage fright. Just because someone can write & play amazing music doesn't make them an extrovert. I know many musicians that are just shy. It's that simple.
Too True is a marvel for so many reasons. Kristin, Sune, and Richard made such a concise decisive sonic statement. I wish it could have been better realized by this lineup. I blame lack of drum machine, or at least a click, unsure/uncoordinated delivery of backing vocals, and failure to deep study guitar tracks. These points are more obvious in their full-kit live performances from this tour.
Saw them as a four piece band (no Andrew). I remember a squeal at the beginning of the show, and thankfully Dee Dee started working with the equipment and got it fixed. Not just a pretty face!
Their name is misleading. The reason is because it's very intelligent in depth music. Kristen ypu and your band are in kontrol(yes the bad pun was intended).
Tim Nolan the 90's are back and i love it. Speedy Ortiz, Swearin, Lemuria, Ex Hex, Tacocat, Colleen Green are just a few examples of great "90's" like alt rock fronted by lovely ladies.
+miked4309 add Charly Bliss, Happy Fangs and Skating Polly to the list. awesome bands and each bring a different sound that is reminiscent of the 90's grind.
+ohthepeppers Mhhh.. Ok. I'll try. Then since you love their energy so much you can try looking into a wall. Also you can try holding your breath at the same with some shades ob. I've herd it dos absolutly nothing for you. It should be right up your bong.
+BMAH Yes off corse they can. You are totally right. But is it not lovely to see the eyes of an artist performing? They only reason i say this is because i think they would be even better if they all stod up and saved the shades for a sunny out door performance.
Daniel Drader The last three bands I've listened to on this station have all had sunglasses clad personnel. Maybe they have a rack of shades at the station ready for people who aren't expecting to be filmed.
He's been their extra guitarist on the Too True tour. I think it was partially to allow Dee Dee to do some singing without playing guitar (which she did when I saw them) but also to be able to mirror all of the guitar over dubs that are on the newest album.
So Joey didn't die? He just mellowed out, got shorter, quit the Ramones and joined this band? Wait...I didn't even realize her name was DeeDee when I posted. That makes it weirder.
May 2024 and this band still sounds amazing.
Such an underrated band and shame they're gone.
rrue..
The best version of Coming Down is here in this session for sure.
without a doubt ... spot on

And she played all the instruments on the new album taboot!
He was also a member of the Strangeloves, who did "I Want Candy".

Its a small room, not a soundstage live recording.
I'm in love with her voice, and I love their songs...
The TH-cam algorithm did well, it brought me here and i `m so glad to know this band. Thanks.
I am so glad someone recommended this band to me.
And now they are gone lol

I wear sunglasses sometimes indoors because the lights are too bright for my sensitive eyes and I am an introvert too.
I'm a semi professional musician and I can attest to the fact that playing live on the radio is intimidating!
dj mic qualities are always sS0o goOd
It's so sad that they have broken up
Thanks to KEXP for posting - excellent performance.
Indeed
We need more videos like this and to ban cell phone crap!
This has a Mazzy Star vibe to it and that's not a bad thing. Beautiful sound!
+mie damie def, the first song after the break and the interview, sounds like the strum pattern for "fade into you"
mie damie just search this band and the following video was a mazy Star vid
and the chord pattern as well.
@@opie3833 Pretty close Fade into you is A E Bm and Coming Down is D A Em
Guess one Dum Dum had a sex change.
Saw you at Coachella! Almost a year ago now! Amazing Dum Dum girls!
Awesome performance!!! Theres a real cool Mazzy Star vibe, especially in Coming Down
I can't get most of the tunes out of my head especially Bedroom Eyes and Ribauld Eyes. I get high listening to their pop music.
God I luv KEXP, thank you guys. From the uk :)

Love the early Jesus and Mary chain style two drum set up! Suits the sound well
Yes, but this style come from Velvet Underground
Me gustan más estas versiones en vivo que las versiones en los albums :D
I absolutely love it. Thanks Kristin, err I mean Dee Dee. Much respect to you. Also, thanks KEXP.
Wow...just....wow...what an amazing voice!
Thanks!! This band Rocks! I appreciate. :)
tres bon groupe , un premier album tres entrainant ,i wait for more from them ,really good band ,
loving the percussion
Great set and great interview, Troy.
Wow just found you guys / girls! Greatness! Thank you KEXP!
Kri-oops, DeeDee is the textbook definition of Cool here.
Cool undercurrent....with the smooth vocals and nice melodies..
Saw them as a four piece band (no Andrew). I remember a squeal at the beginning of the show, and thankfully Dee Dee started working with the equipment and got it fixed. Not just a pretty face!
I kind of like them, today is the first I've heard of them.
She's adorable too!
Coming Down is a great song. Heard on the radio.
Superb stuff!!!
Amazing performance. Would be great if there weren't ad breaks in the middle of songs though.
beautiful voice !!!
Right in the middle of Coming down, You Tube interrupts the song to show an ad, How sleazy is that?
Get ad blocker...
Their name is misleading. The reason is because it's very intelligent in depth music. Kristen ypu and your band are in kontrol(yes the bad pun was intended).
Trouble is My Name got me
Dum Dum Girls are making early 90s style music.
I love their sound. I play the guitar and love their sound. It doesn't hurt that they are cute and sexy too!
Yo Mike D, thx 4 dat list, so far Speedy O, Skating P & Happy F top mine.
Now, go try Ron Gallo " Young lady you're scaring me".
just AMAZING
sounds like mazzy star meets the Sundays ..nice.
Meets Suzanna Hoffs (Bangles)
Awesome!
heard a little mazzy star in there
love her dip dye hair
I kinda feel the same vibe like warpaint with this interview
Please Come to Hawaii!!
My heart melts at 7:18
I love them!
Thanks to Beware the Batman... I found a great band!
coming down reminds me so much of mazzy star
Nice and mellow :)
Nice !
why da people call dem da dum dum girls? i happen to think they is all very smart and talented to. it's not fair + i luff dem.
dum dum is a sort of ammunition and not "stupid" in this context :)
i was of course just being silly (joke) - they're quite smart
Oh my God, Malia...
that Mustang. holy smokes.
+M. Craver There's no one playing a mustang?
+Robbie Broome 2:35
thanks for contributing tho
My bad - I watched the full video, no clue how i never saw it. Gorgeous though.
5:40 what a smile!
7:14 Again
This is good. Very eighties British sounding. Nowt wrong with that.
Did these gals name their group after the song by Talk Talk?
Loved it. But their energy? It's like looking at a wall.
+Jamie Holmes Perhaps Miley Cyrus would be more to your tastes.
+ohthepeppers
Mhhh.. Ok. I'll try. Then since you love their energy so much you can try looking into a wall. Also you can try holding your breath at the same with some shades ob. I've herd it dos absolutly nothing for you. It should be right up your bong.
+Jamie Holmes Can't they just play their instruments and sing their songs without bouncing around?
+BMAH
Yes off corse they can. You are totally right. But is it not lovely to see the eyes of an artist performing? They only reason i say this is because i think they would be even better if they all stod up and saved the shades for a sunny out door performance.
Jamie Holmes Shades in rock-n-roll has a long history, ask Roy Orbison and a million other rockers.
i wish i was that bike
looks like a Ramone and is called DeeDee - nice xD
yes its ok:)
must be real bright in there huh
Witness protection? Guess we have to go to the shows to see what they look like.
Daniel Drader The last three bands I've listened to on this station have all had sunglasses clad personnel. Maybe they have a rack of shades at the station ready for people who aren't expecting to be filmed.
Michael Dicicco
who the fuck is that
Daniel Drader
i was suggesting shes not worth looking up
Daniel Drader
every time you respond with all knowing wisdom i get harder, dont stop
If Jules was my mom I'd still be in nappies
Brave e Belle...
I tought that Dum Dum Girls was a band of girls, but I saw a guy in the band is someone leaving the band?
He's been their extra guitarist on the Too True tour. I think it was partially to allow Dee Dee to do some singing without playing guitar (which she did when I saw them) but also to be able to mirror all of the guitar over dubs that are on the newest album.
look...........................................................................................................................................................................................................music
sorry but my child will sleep
what are the songs name?
+sammy c. Are You OK?
In The Wake Of You
Coming Down
Trouble Is My Name
+sammy c. Darude - Sandstorm
I prefer Grand Ole Party
So Joey didn't die? He just mellowed out, got shorter, quit the Ramones and joined this band?
Wait...I didn't even realize her name was DeeDee when I posted. That makes it weirder.
#BrodyshotMusic
m u i buena
Bad ass
mazzy star?
I really liked 'Are you ok". But Coming down was to slow and depressing.
gafas de sol hhahaha
Nothing personal, but "Coming Down" is a blatant copy of Mazzy Star's "Fade into You".
Dum Dum Girls copy Mazzy Star who copied Galaxie 500 who blatantly copied the shit out of The Velvet Underground.
It's so sad this gets you enough attention to get drugs
Muita pose, muita maquiagem ...muitos acessórios e pouco som.
Don't do drugs kids...
Paul C ...do them when you get older instead ;)
+Paul C Oh, but you should.
Coming Down & Bedroom Eyes would be a great combo for a stripper to dance to. Just sayin'
I don't like all the members. I perfer the old band.
Boring
poser.
Yikes. If you can't fix it just cover it in reverb!
