Agreed. These tourists could afford the flights, £5,000 in spending money, but staying in a flea pit roach hotel. It's not foolproof, but if they weren't so cheap with their accommodation it probably wouldn't have been stolen.
And yet I left valuables, including £1300 in a safety deposit box, while I was kept out of Thailand during covid for two years and three months. It was there when I returned. I had not even paid the rent. There is no telling how honest they will be.
The hotels usually only accept liability for 5000 baht - around £100 - for a safe deposit box in a room. I don't know about boxes at reception, but quite possibly the same limit. Cards might seem the obvious solution, but most places want cash. And of course you get a 3% bank fee for overseas usage and a poor exchange rate for card usage. As for travel insurance, that probably won't cover the amount of cash you need, plus your holiday will probably be over before they pay out anyway.
You might get a 3% fee and poor exchange but others with good cards and banks pay nothing, including having atm charges refunded back regardless of amount.
@ash31311 All the major uk clearing banks have these charges, so the comment is relevant to the vast majority of people. Perhaps a more constructive comment would have been to name the financial institutions providing the fee free accounts to which you refer.
@censoredeveryday3320 The couple in the video who had their money stolen were British holidaymakers. This was the intended audience of my original post. Schwab is an American bank. It does offer 'checking' accounts to the UK, but it's primarily an investment platform and a brokerage account with a minimum balance is also required. Also, all funds are held in the US in US dollars and all transactions are in US dollars. It's no use as a replacement for a UK current account and I can't really see a British holidaymaker opening one just to try and save a bit of money on card usage when they go away once or twice as year.
