Fashion would indeed go totally haywire in a world like that. There's no point in dressing for the weather when 12 year olds can summon thunderstorms. You can't even dress for the season cos you never know when a elementally themed gang will accidently uncover a primordial sky god.
Would it not just emphasize very practical stuff? Layers for example to adapt as much as possible. Bags and accessories to help prepare for lots of different situations. Washability since clearly the weather will result in lots of water and washing lol.
@eliontheinternet3298 I mean, you can still make an educated guest and hope for the best. Or teach your Pokémon a move that alters the weather, and dress based on that
@@eliontheinternet3298 Well the early gens definitely emphasise that. Everyone you meet on a route is either in sports uniforms, activewear, or hiking clothing. It pretty much predicted gorpcore 20 years early.
For years I've said that that the secret to dressing like a Pokemon trainer is at least one major piece that cannot be described using clothing words that the average dad would know. "Pants", "shirt" and "skirt" are too easy. Show me a sleeveless jacket with suspender straps hanging from the bottom. Biker shorts that are also a unitard. Make a shirt that goes over too many sections of the body to clearly categorize, make the colors high constrast, and then cut the shoulders out and you're good to go.
I think “flamboyance creep” is more accurate than “flamboyance drift”. Drift (ie linguistic drift) means something slowly morphs into something else for no reason. Creep (ie power creep) is when something gets bigger & stronger in an endless loop of one-upping.
you're using "ie" (in effect) to mean "eg" (exempli gratia). the former means "this one thing, specifically, is all i mean", while the latter means "here, have one inexhaustive example of the kind of thing i mean".
Since I've cosplayed Cynthia before, I can confirm that the 'why' of her hair baubles is "the absolute whimsy of it bouncing when you move your head". It's a fun acessory to fidget with when you sit down or something. Only con is that it was SUCH an ordeal to find out how to attach it. I came up with a whole plan to attach them to hair clips, only for them to be too heavy. Eventually I just sewed them into my wig. I also think they actually defy the design expectation with that choice, because many people have thought 'she must have an umbreon' when seeing Cynthia, so that's a fun misdirect.
@@HeyLizardLeigh Oh I can definitely imagine that an Elesa cosplay would be quite the challenge too! But then the satisfaction of figuring out a way to make it work... *chef's kiss*
Isn't it referencing her lucario? EDIT: I've just noticed the accessories have gold rings on them. Genuinely feels like a Mandela effect, I thought they were completely black all this time.
@@hbic7367 Actually, you make a good point about how they look like Lucario's "mane", if it weren't for the yellow stripes. I never made that connection! That's a neat observation :)
@@marliesd5830 I'm certain they are meant to reference Lucario, who is treated like a mythical mon, you get it as a gift and it even got a movie. In the game it's treated as a special cool pokemon. But the colors look exactly like Umbreon lol!
AHH the gen 6 girl player design was an absolute obsession for my budding fashion designer brain, she's so perfectly on trend and polished for SPECIFICALLY the early 2010s. I desperately wanted to make her skirt. The entire thing of trainers being forced to always wear hats until gen 8 I think was also one of the defining traits of the Pokemon aesthetic, because maybe I just wasn't very sporty, but I knew no one who would ever wear a hat if they werent forced to at school. Yet the game said absolutely not, find a hat you like and wear it! Then gen 9...personally I actually really ended up liking gen 9 but ooof the uniforms are almost exactly like the ones I grew up with and hated, and kind of drained the outfit potential from all student characters/trainer npcs, luckily absolutely carried by Team Star and the gym leaders. Even Arven and Nemona, don't quite get to express with clothing that you don't just get to wear an exact duplicate of immediately. What is their taste in outfits outside of school? Is Nemona into sportswear with bright and cheery motifs? Did Arven have any space to develop a sense of fashion between a lot of depression and speedrunning survival skill development? (I like to think he's a socks and birkenstocks type, a combo strictly banned at school)
This! The fashion is one of the things that keeps me playing the games, I’m literally motivated by knowing where the next clothing shop is. Gen 9 was rough for me (even though I did enjoy the Team Star storyline and open world) because I got so burnt out on not having a fun little fashion break every few towns. I really hope they bring it back for the next game, it just feels weird without it!
Ohh the advent of ORAS redesigns hit me at the same time I discovered Drag Race and I like to think they both equally sewed the seeds for my current flamboyantly dressed self.
i find it hilarious how you say that pokemon genders are super binary because whenever i want to look the most extremely nonbinary i dress like a pokemon player character dressed by an eight year okd
yes!! this is EXACTLY why it's so funny that the game design for player characters is so wildly gendered (boys can only wear pants and girls can only wear above the knee skirts or shorts) when I feel like the actual aesthetic of pokémon is way more flexible.
The way the poke balls are attached to the hip makes me think of a chatelaine! Basically a woman’s keychain on the hip with chains that hold all the things she’s use for her trade like scissors or other tools. I don’t know if you’d take suggestions for this cosplay and I don’t want to change the way it is but it would be a beautiful design detail and maybe you’d add other lavender witch trinkets!
I can imagine this cos play being an antagonists in a future game where she specialises in Halloween pokémon and her having a noibat/pumpkaboo as a starter
Have her be a dual type Grass/Ghost type Gym Leader, who also shows up throughout the story, and her Gym is just a Grey Gardens style mouldering manor - with a giant haunted garden maze! You could even wrap the whole thing in a Past/Present gimmick, and have the Past be when the manor was in active use! And you'd have to swap back and forth to solve the puzzles
I do love the team start outfits, I realized as I was editing that I don't think I underlined enough the fact that like while I do think they are WILD I also DO LIKE THEM A LOT, especially atticus tbh
I like the team star outfits mostly because I think they reflect something in the narrative. Team Star was created by a bunch of social outcasts who got bullied for being their own varieties of weird, and so when they became the bosses of Team Star they embraced it by having their team's tailor make absolutely ridiculous outfits.
I appreciate how you did the sponsorship part of the video. Doesn’t feel forced, it’s something you actually use and tied into the video so it’s wholly relevant, and after a while it didn’t even feel like an ad, but a tutorial on how you used it for your project
this means so much to me!! I was so excited when Milanote reached out because I knew it would actually very genuinely help me in these projects. and i had SO much fun making the boards themselves, I think they turned out SO cool and helpful!
Seeing this cosplay come together over such an extended timeframe is weirdly reassuring to me. Like we all know making costumes takes a ton of time, but sometimes professional cosplay content makes me feel discouraged over the lack of time I can dedicate to my projects bc of my life and full-time non-cosplay job. The way you present your process feels so relatable, right down to the late night, last minute “I really should be packing” final touches. Like cosplay is not a slickly-edited 30-50 minute video, it’s months or years of creating and long breaks and creating some more. Great job on the video! Can’t wait for the next one! 🖤
thank you!! tbh I think a big part of it is that I cosplayed for so long with absolutely NO social media following, and then even longer after that while not being a "content creator"! it means that while I'm very much focusing on my video production as a job, it's so important to me to keep my crafting the same way it's always been. Which is also how a lot of other people craft too!
I speak pretty much no French at all, but I read so I do know that he never said quoi means a certain something? I think. So yup this makes perfect sense to me as well😂❤✨
@@cmaden78 the literal translation for je ne said quoi is 'i dont know what' but in english we use it to mean something like an 'x factor', so to having to 'sais quoi' is 'i need to know what the x factor is', in this case, what makes pokemon fashion that
Love how consistent the quality of your content is while maintaining these run times, and my adhd brain appreciates the noticeable play speed increase.
Inventing my own Pokémon was my gateway into doing character design. (Also, I swear I drew Azumarill a year before it existed: I was making fake chocolate wrappers where each of the flavours had its own creature, and the bubble chocolate was represented by a round boi with rabbit ears, a similar wavy/spotty pattern to the Pokémon and a gumball tail.)
when you talked about being a lawful instead of chaotic sewer when cutting it out i IMMEDIATELY thought of nicole rudolph who is so precise with the stuff she makes, and then was jumpscared when you brought her up in the very next section 😂😂❤
Even with the generations' professors, their designs tell you what their personality is like from the first look you have of them. Oak is classic, he's the baseline. You don't find out much about him but he's professional and put together, without being too rigid Elm looks a bit more erratic, which makes sense as baby Pokémon were introduced in that gen, so he has to keep up with all the baby Pokémon in his lab, like a tired parent Birch, in both the original RSE and ORAS, you can tell he's pretty laid back when he's not being attacked by a wild poochyena just by the cargo shorts Rowan is the first one to not wear a white lab coat. He's well dressed and put together, but there's something about him that makes you curious every time he's talking to your character. Juniper has the same vibes as Birch, while also maintaining her absolute girlboss nature with that pencil skirt Sycamore (my beloved) looks like he's been through some stuff. His hair is wild and fluffy, his shirt's slightly undone, but it's tasteful. He's a cafe-loving goofball; but depending on sources he's simultaneously a workaholic with a coffee addiction. Kukui is even MORE laid back than Birch or Juniper. No shirt at all. But despite that he still knows what has to get done since he makes himself your final challenge to become Alola's first champion (honorable mention to Burnett, another athletic girlboss) Magnolia has this wise lady look to her, she's been at this for a long time- and her look reflects that, with her lab coat reaching her ankles with her dress. Sonia on the other hand, she JUST finally became the regional professor in place of Magnolia, so she's still wearing what she is when we first see her. She's a well known researcher in galar, but when it comes to being a professor, she's still got things left to learn. Sada and Turo are.... obvious. They got so absorbed into their respective time periods (past and future respectively) that they lost sight over everything else in their lives. Their AIs wearing what the humans that built them thought was appropriate for whatever time they were researching. I just think that's fun ^-^ Some more honorable mentions: Laventon; like our player character, isn't from hisui. But unlike us he's still from that time period, and his clothes reflect that. They also look well worn, since he follows the player to every galaxy base camp while they help him complete the first ever Pokédex. Director Clavell, our stand in professor since Sada and Turo are absent, also wears the same color palette as the students. He doesn't have to wear the uniform like them but seeing him with it makes him seem approachable. Though the fur collar around his neck (similar to a certain trauma inducing champion from Sinnoh 😆) tells us that he's probably hiding something, but we won't find out until later. Bonus points for his glasses doing the Anime Thing. Lemme know if I missed anyone!!
I love this analysis, and may I ask; I consider Jacq the true professor role of gen 9; he introduces and guides the player and evaluates your Pokedex, and he even follows the tree name tradition. But honestly, all I get from his design is "quirky purple man, got a lotta books!"
@@lilpetz500 i was kinda thinking that the professor role is split pretty evenly between Clavell and Jacq, mostly since Clavell is the one you get your starter from. (But if you really wanna push it then you could say that about Leon in SWSH and Tierno and Trevor in XY too so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ grey area, I guess 😆)
I actually like the Team Star bosses' crazy outfits. They are homemade by one of the bosses, and he is wonderfully extra. I'm not sure if the creators made this intentional, but my head cannon is that the amateur fashion designer went all out on his friends' outfits because he had too many ideas and fit them all in at once....which I totally did at that age!
I didn't get a chance to get into it enough with trying to keep the script length down but i DO ALSO love the team star bosses- Atticus is one of my fave poison designs in the whole franchise, and I think it's sooo smart to have multiple enemy bosses so you can get more 'typed' trainers in each game without splitting them between versions. Like I was soo sad to miss out on some of the galar gym leaders because I was playing sword and not shield you know? 😭
@@HeyLizardLeigh 100% with you on Galar and Atticus! If you haven't been able to do end game dialogue with characters (sorry, new to your channel so I haven't seen much YET😂), I would even just look up the scenes as a compilation because Atticus is fun to talk to post game.
One thing that I find occurring often in Pokemon design is an interesting head. Either a hat, facial accessory, or a unique hairstyle. The vast majority of Pokemon characters have something interesting going on at their face/head.
"Checkmate atheists" really had me out here choking on my breakfast ramen, thanks uncle lizard On another note, I love how much you detail the process of upgrading and reiterating your cosplay pieces, it makes me feel like just because I "finish" a piece doesn't mean I can't push it further later, even much later if I want.
Man, you really do just steal hours of my life at a time without me noticing smh. Jokes aside, I have been *addicted* to this little series of yours, I watched the last one twice! Dropping my like and comment to help push this into the algo for those like me who love this shit! On a separate note, you definitely sold me on trying Milanote. I'm currently working on a very large crafting project myself and i think this is exactly what I need for my organization! Signed up with your link. Have a good week Lizard!
ahh thank you so much, i'm glad you're enjoying the series!! and YAY milanote was genuinely such a treat to use for this video, I can't recommend it enough!!
39:41- the shawl you chose definitely still makes sense! it is always more possible that people still wore something outdated than someone wearing something that hadn’t been popularized yet!! i think you made a great choice!
I'm a MilleniElder, so the 90s series was what the kids I was babysitting when I was a teenager were watching. So I immediately identified with and adored Team Rocket, the flamboyant duo. I (theater kid, gay Dad) loved repeating their chant and then having the kids repeatedly fight me with their Pokémon stuffies until I dramatically fled. Very fun times.
Whopper popper is also the term for large snaps in theater costume design too, the woman I worked under when did my work placement in a regional theater called them that and for the longest time I thought that was here own silly little name for them and it is very heartwarming to hear other people use that term
This series is hands down my favorite thing to watch rn! As an English literature and linguistics student and someone new to cosplay, it's the perfect mesh of media analysis and really cool crafting! Love all the insight in your thought process, ans your willingness to change, shift and go back to already finished pieces to make them better. That takes some of the pressure off making more complicated pieces. Genuinely, thank you for all you do!
In series merch is one of my favorite things. That's why I'm obsessed with the random kid in one peice wearing a Kuma shirt. Like yeah....either his mom made it for him because he loves kuma....or Kuma has merch....and I love both ideas
i played gen 5 but heard it was easy, so gave myself the challenge of "never use the pokemon center" ... and that challeng genuinely made it one of my favorite games. so i highly recommend that
Personally, my method of adding challenge to pokemon games is to run them where I only use what I call “gift pokemon” - that is, pokemon that game practically hands to you. So yes, your starter and any other pokemon that are literally given to the player, but also things like trades, fossils, and set encounters (such as the Snorlax that like to block your path, or the Gimmighoul that sit on top of the watchtowers in Paldea). I also try to rely on found items as much as possible, rather than buying them, though that’s not exactly a new concept to pokemon challenges. I find it very fun, as it forces me to not only use pokemon I normally wouldn’t (see: Snorlax!), but also to just deal with type disadvantages and lack of coverage that, on my own, I would have never let be an issue. For example, I’m in the early part of my scarlet run rn, and my only three pokemon are Sprigatito, Snom, and the aforementioned Gimmighoul. The fire/flying struggle is REAL, I actually lost to the bug gym on my first attempt, and Gimmighoul is frankly a struggle to make work at the moment. I’m having a lot of fun! :D
I love the different ways these videos wander around. It's like going through an exhibit that has connected but distinct parts and that the transitions between the individual exhibits have been carefully chosen and arranged.
I love how your videos never feel like they drag on, despite how long they are! You do a really great job of pacing and transitioning topics. Also, I highly recommend ORAS, I think it does a really great job of keeping the best parts of the original games while also adding a lot of fun content. Looking forward to the next one!
Yesss it’s so good! It follows the timeline of Emerald rather than the original two Ruby and Sapphire too! Most of the fandom hardcore ships Wallace and Steven and playing the game will quickly show why lol
honestly, the little details you considered when choosing certain aspects like square patterns and tying back to the Silph Scope.... that's so insane. it's so cool. those details are what truly make the design not only shine but link it strongly to the Pokemon world it's supposed to be coming from and i was floored by your choices there (also thank you for the shoutout to us pkmn gijinka creators)
i also am pokémon naive and all these videos are so accessible and interesting! i'm honestly kicking my past child self for being so unnecessarily contrarian that i missed out on such a cool franchise but very happy i can learn about it now from someone who so clearly has so much love for it!
Have you looked into the Pokémon conquest game designs? I love how the warlords evolve with their signature Pokémon (yes they literally evolve and get more fancy outfits) and there is a lot of incorporation of Pokémon within their outfits
I'm watching the long form videos on this project way out of order and I've seen your reels in passing for ages but in the past couple of days I've finally watched several of your long videos while working on my own little craft project and it's been a real pleasure. The time spent on the video subjects (e.g. the primary: sewing/project work and the secondary: movie analysis/convention stories/etc) is incredibly well balanced, the transitions between subjects is smooth and allows for you to build your discussion in a way that's dynamic and engaging but not disruptive, and your vibes are just immaculate. I love cosplay, I never broached it to the extent you have, but we come from the same late '00s/early '10s cosplay era and your approach to the craft resonates with me deeply. I remember doing a somewhat thrown together Cowgirl Trainer cosplay at Colossalcon way back in 2013 and unfortunately it didn't read as Pokemon so much as a MLP character 🥲 This video lowkey makes me want to reimagine that cosplay because I stand-by that it was a great idea for a low-key, final-con-day, cosplay LOL Anyway, thank you for sharing your creation/development process through these videos. They're really cool and it's very fun to follow along while exploring topics like The First Movie or the unhinged fashion of the Pokemon world!!
This cosplay is EVERYTHING. I can't even pick a favorite part, because it's all my favorite! And I love your style of mixing "making" videos with analytical essays!
absolutely wild seeing you say that was your second ever crochet project. watching you make that little piece for your stardew valley cosplay was the push i needed to learn crochet and i got fully obsessed immediately. i finished crocheting a giant blanket to this video !!
@@HeyLizardLeigh Now imagining "I LIKE SHORTS" emblazoned on the back of shorts in the style of Juicy. Maybe a bit wordy but this feels workshoppable 😂 On a less silly note, I would totally consider buying shorts as merch with understated/tiny embroidery with the phrase. Coincidentally going tiny would also make it less rude to shorts to put it on a shirt, and it would be pretty neat if you were able to offer a set 👀
Your videos are so high quality and satisfying to watch. I know NOTHING about fashion and honestly, don't really care much for it -- but you make learning about it enjoyable! keep up the great work :-)
sdfghjhjkk i loved pokemon fashion when i was younger, and making up trainer inspired outfits, which almost always involved stealing my mom's fanny pack. EDIT: SHORTS 🙌
Oh my gosh I am dying to go make things from this but I am needing a infodump about your son Sableye so badly ALSO THE REVEAL IS STUNNING I'm dying, its SO good I'm dying, I wanna make a trainer fit so badly, 2003 is coming back to haunt me, I can feel it 🤣
I will ALWAYS have a sableye on my team in game, and irl if pokémon were real I would 100% just be a sableye trainer and struggle with getting them to not eat my rhinestone collection in my craft room 😭 I love them so much
i love this long-term commitment to a project series, as a testament to how it's okay if things take time. it's okay to give yourself a little break. big thoughts take big time. it's not about churning out "content" - it's about figuring things out and being kind to yourself and allowing space for designs to change and grow as you do (and the occasionally very chaotic late-night rush when the inspiration hits). that's what makes your videos so wholesome to watch! 💖
you're so inspiring to me!!! as another crafty nonbinary creator i love to see your point of view on fashion and how you tackle your projects with an analytical eye ❤
!!!!!!! i think i've been seeing shorts from you for a long time, but youtube finally placed one of your videos in front of my eyes and i think i sat still for an hour with my mouth wide open - you are both so talented and also so, so interesting to listen to!!!! i'm in awe of your hand stitching and delighted by so much pokemon lore i have extremely little context for - thank you so much for sharing! genuinely can't wait to catch up on the journey and see more!
I just wanted to say I adore this saga so much and get so excited when your notifications pop up! Thank you for sharing you talent and loves with this world 💜
I unironically can and do dress like a Pokémon trainer every day. I only ask myself what Pokémon type I want to evoke with my apparel and the fashion demon delivers every time. Today is Grass/Dark Type.
I love your sewing vlog/video essay videos so much! I’m always so excited to see the notification! It’s also very encouraging to see you putting so much thought and time into each piece when there can be a lot of pressure to rush as a maker.
thank you!!! and yeah man I FEEL that pressure, I very much still feel like I’m trying to figure out the balance. which is why it means so much to hear from people that it’s nice to see this pace of crafting actually represented in content, cause it’s just not that common !!!
I've never played Pokemon, only watched a couple eps of the cartoon.... But I still super love this deep dive and the costume emerging from it. Thanks!
Uniforms in g9 is a backtrack, but I feel like it's partially a stepping stone for how much customization we got for the character. Im hoping they bring back the wardrobe of outfits AND the player customization for g10! (I was also salty about the uniforms but the dlc adds some more which is nice, but still hoping for wardrobe comeback)
You just explained perfectly why I love Sword and Shield Gym Leader designs so much, when even I didn't even know how to put it into words. That outfit you made is absolutely stunning and I'll be looking forward to seeing that staff~
Loved this dive into the fashion design of the pokemon world! So excited to see more and more of this cosplay coming together, each piece is so artfully crafted! Your lawful good style of sewing pays off spectacularly!
i just wanted to stop as i watch thru this video with two videos left in the playlist currently and share how inspiring it is to watch and hear about your thought process, and over the past few hours watching these in order all in one go has got the gears in my head turning as I'm working on redesigning my own pokemon OC, and this video did wonders to help me figure out what's still missing from their design, so your videos are definitely doing an amazing job inspiring other people and I'm personally also enjoying watching the care and thought going into each piece you make as someone whose sewing abilities are nowhere close to this yet :'3 your work is incredible and the amount of time you spend deep diving is also so fun to watch as someone using these videos as 'second monitor' content to watch as I'm working on my own projects
im a casual pokemon fan, ive only played one of the games (pokemon X), but the charcter design has been the thing that keeps me interested in every generation. i feel the same way about the gen 8 gym leaders, they are just so incredibly well designed!! im SO excited to see the gengar staff build!!! just from the bits and pieces you showed, i know its going to look incredible!!!
This is the first video I’ve seen of yours, and I am completely floored! You are an amazing designer and I love the way your brain works. I love Pokemon and art and creativity and this was such a captivating video! Beautiful work and I’m looking forward to seeing more ❤
I do know what a Pince Nez is... but it's a word that I encountered for the first time while reading "Treasure Island" when I was 7, and I'm now horrified to discover just how incorrectly I've been pronouncing it for 23 years
When youtube put this video in front of me I was expecting just a video essay but now I NEED to see the rest of this cosplay come together A video essay about pokemon fashion is also something I need but oh well
Loving this series as an ode to nostalgia, nerdhood and crafts. It's coming together beautifully and is always such a delight to watch. Thanks for sharing and the incredible feats of editing!
I highly recommend starting with ORAS, both because, as you mentioned, the redesigns are ✨chef's kiss ✨ but also because if you go the contest route, you can fight the evil team with literal beauty pagant pokemon, and it's absolutely hilarious to be doing a final battle with a pokemon that has the supestar aura you get from doing all of the master contests.
I have never played a Pokémon game, but I love the energy and fun that I see from other people, also the cute little guys! Thank you for making these videos so that we can learn a little about both the game and the history!!
1. I love the sponsorship ;u; I think I might use it for d&d organization in the future after playing around with it a bit. 2. I'm currently planning my own original take on Jirachi and it was definitely inspired by watching you make this whole costume so this keeps feeding my brain worms so thank you.
This is wildly beautiful and thus wildly successful! Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Both the physical act of sewing and assembling, and also the thought process behind it.
I've been bindge-watching all your Lavender Town Witch videos this week, so I was so excited to see this one drop. It's honestly such a great series of videos essays about Pokemon, historical fashion, and cosplay, and this was an amazing finale!
I absolutely adore this series you're doing. It's so lovely to see both your crafting process and dive deep into your inspirations and love of the source material!!
I never before heard about you, I have about 0 interest in fashion and my pokemon days have been long ago. But was I glued to the screen for this entire video? Heck yeah I was. Your energy is amazing and your skill is *chef's kiss*. I will now proceed to watch the video on that skirt, because these pokeball details are such great desing work, I need to know how they came to be and if there is more great details in this that I am missing.
This is such a well thought out and informative video, I’m actually watching it while making my own pokemon cosplay and this has given me a whole new perspective
Absolutely adore this! Love seeing your process. I am most of the way through making my 'Steampunk Pokémon Trainer' cosplay,. I've been making it on and off for 5 years 😆 but i'll get there eventually!
I've just finished binge watching all your videos and I'm so inspired to venture beyond just Dia de Los Muertos costumes and look into cosplay. I just purchased a book on how to create costume armor and props with Worbla and craft foam. Wish me luck!!!
I loved this whole video, and the fact you mentioned Plasma's outfits being ridiculous made me laugh, because they're literally dressed like Pokémon crusaders due to the nature of their evil team. Pokémon Black was my first game and holds a special spot in my heart even though a lot of people Muk on Gen V. They had a thought-provoking (although of course ill-intentioned) goal and the character development you see in N and his interactions with you as a Trainer makes for a beautifully crafted story that always hits me in the feels. I think all of the games have had the ability to create stories like this, but BW actually did a lot better than people give it credit for. I literally tell anyone who asks me that even though it's nearly five generations ago by now, it still holds up. It actually led me to write up my _own_ character based off of the adventures I had in game, especially involving the Entralink and its interdimensional properties 'cause I really enjoyed that game function. Also, this video has inspired me to someday make the outfit I wrote up for him. I took a lot of time designing it, including his bag and accessories. It feels very put together and it's an outfit I would actually wear if I were a Trainer, so it fits. If you really take the time to explore any of these games, there's often many details that will resonate heavily with each individual. BW being set in a region inspired mainly by the New York area was nostalgic for me, as I was born there but moved away when I was young. That whole game felt like home to me and it will always be my favorite installation in the series.
Hearing you say you crochet during dnd makes me think how both me and my twin sister do hand crafts during dnd was well, she crochets granny squares and I hand sew (currently) tiny Barbie clothes :)
I love pokemon's human design so much. I aspired to be able to design nonsensical but believable fashion that exist to look cool just like them one day
This video absolutely rocked. Love the deep dive into the fashion of pokemon and, as always, your Lavender Town witch is looking incredible! Thanks for the video~
ahhhhh i love all the bits and details in this it’s totally making me want to pull out my crafts! i love hearing about what you’re drawing from and the thought you’re putting into it !
I had no idea that the world had gotten so big. To be truthful I stopped paying attention long before the kids stopped watching. @@eliontheinternet3298it seems a lot of people took that approach too
@eliontheinternet3298 I mean, you can still make an educated guest and hope for the best.
Make a shirt that goes over too many sections of the body to clearly categorize, make the colors high constrast, and then cut the shoulders out and you're good to go.
this i SUCH a good way to think of it lmao
ACCURATE
I think “flamboyance creep” is more accurate than “flamboyance drift”. Drift (ie linguistic drift) means something slowly morphs into something else for no reason. Creep (ie power creep) is when something gets bigger & stronger in an endless loop of one-upping.
I can see that!
you're using "ie" (in effect) to mean "eg" (exempli gratia). the former means "this one thing, specifically, is all i mean", while the latter means "here, have one inexhaustive example of the kind of thing i mean".
@@hemoglobin3751 Good to know. Thanks! :)
I remember having friends who cosplayed Elesa back in the day and that was a WILD undertaking!! and yes, I thought she had an umbreon for soo long!
"This bad boy can fit so many historical eras in it" is my entire design aesthetic

Galar really missed out on a great chance… KILTS!
I wanted to play a Scottish boy being the most incompetence possible.
I didn't think of that before but yeah! Give the boys kilts and the girls sweatpants! It's sad that they didn't make it as costumizable as they could
I’m surprised that they didn’t give the male player character a kilt considering a garment like that could’ve easily elevated the design we have now
"Paldea is unequivocably the worst decision the franchise has made by making school uniforms we can only accessorize"
*PREACH*
"There are over 250 trainer classes, and that wouldn't be a very fun video to watch"
Clearly you haven't seen my TH-cam history.
ORAS Wallace with Trixie/Katya's "Hi gay!" Took me out good lord 😅
sometimes I laugh so hard at my own jokes when I’m editing and I can never tell if it’s a good or bad thing, but that one got me a few times😭
Ohh the advent of ORAS redesigns hit me at the same time I discovered Drag Race and I like to think they both equally sewed the seeds for my current flamboyantly dressed self.
Oh my god, me too! I had to take a moment to recover!
I literally have the Wallace Pokemon card in my hand....
@@HeyLizardLeigh
i find it hilarious how you say that pokemon genders are super binary because whenever i want to look the most extremely nonbinary i dress like a pokemon player character dressed by an eight year okd
Or how it's a meme that Pokémon trainers from scarlet and violet sometimes look like the opposite gender they identify as
yes!! this is EXACTLY why it's so funny that the game design for player characters is so wildly gendered (boys can only wear pants and girls can only wear above the knee skirts or shorts) when I feel like the actual aesthetic of pokémon is way more flexible.
Lol
We laugh at Prof. Oak for being so dementia ridden that he can't see if we're a boy or a girl, but honestly... I don't blame him,

Ngl she looks like Agatha in her prime as a gym leader or main character
perhaps a hot take but I actually kinda love team stars outfits. They’re so completely ridiculous and kind of stupid I find it very charming and fun
The team star leader outfits absolutely *rule*. They're designed by a chuuni obsessed with ninjas, of course they're over the top
I mean designed by a bunch of kids with unlimited money I expected the crazy to come through
I do love the team start outfits, I realized as I was editing that I don't think I underlined enough the fact that like while I do think they are WILD I also DO LIKE THEM A LOT, especially atticus tbh
fr like they are sooo camp and i love it
I like the team star outfits mostly because I think they reflect something in the narrative.
I absolutely love you profile pic!
"I can't just 'je ne sais quoi' I have to 'sais quoi' " has to be one of the best sentences I've ever heard

Inventing my own Pokémon was my gateway into doing character design.
(Also, I swear I drew Azumarill a year before it existed: I was making fake chocolate wrappers where each of the flavours had its own creature, and the bubble chocolate was represented by a round boi with rabbit ears, a similar wavy/spotty pattern to the Pokémon and a gumball tail.)
oh that's so CUTE
when you talked about being a lawful instead of chaotic sewer when cutting it out i IMMEDIATELY thought of nicole rudolph who is so precise with the stuff she makes, and then was jumpscared when you brought her up in the very next section 😂😂❤
LOVE her stuff!!
Even with the generations' professors, their designs tell you what their personality is like from the first look you have of them.
Oak is classic, he's the baseline. You don't find out much about him but he's professional and put together, without being too rigid
Elm looks a bit more erratic, which makes sense as baby Pokémon were introduced in that gen, so he has to keep up with all the baby Pokémon in his lab, like a tired parent
Birch, in both the original RSE and ORAS, you can tell he's pretty laid back when he's not being attacked by a wild poochyena just by the cargo shorts
Rowan is the first one to not wear a white lab coat. He's well dressed and put together, but there's something about him that makes you curious every time he's talking to your character.
Juniper has the same vibes as Birch, while also maintaining her absolute girlboss nature with that pencil skirt
Sycamore (my beloved) looks like he's been through some stuff.
But despite that he still knows what has to get done since he makes himself your final challenge to become Alola's first champion (honorable mention to Burnett, another athletic girlboss)
Magnolia has this wise lady look to her, she's been at this for a long time- and her look reflects that, with her lab coat reaching her ankles with her dress.
I just think that's fun ^-^
Some more honorable mentions:
Laventon; like our player character, isn't from hisui.
@@lilpetz500Being a purple professor who made a pokédex helped Jacq make a new friend in Masters. Unfortunately that friend is Volo.

An entomologist trying to develop a clownsona makes me feel a little called out
I actually like the Team Star bosses' crazy outfits.
Working on a fairy type elite four cosplay! This video was super helpful with the design!
One thing that I find occurring often in Pokemon design is an interesting head. Either a hat, facial accessory, or a unique hairstyle. The vast majority of Pokemon characters have something interesting going on at their face/head.
"Checkmate atheists" really had me out here choking on my breakfast ramen, thanks uncle lizard
On another note, I love how much you detail the process of upgrading and reiterating your cosplay pieces, it makes me feel like just because I "finish" a piece doesn't mean I can't push it further later, even much later if I want.
I also find it cool that not only did you reference the tile graphics from red& blue but you also created a tie that looked like gengars tounge.
SO TRUE !!!!!
Pokemon villain design is just the "Male? Female? I identify as a threat!" Meme.
i played gen 5 but heard it was easy, so gave myself the challenge of "never use the pokemon center"
... and that challeng genuinely made it one of my favorite games. so i highly recommend that
oh that’s FASCINATING that sounds like a wonderful way to add stakes to these games!!
This truly means so much to me 🥹 thank you
I love how your videos never feel like they drag on, despite how long they are!

Heck yes, the newest installment of this saga! Very excited to watch 💜

I've never played Pokemon, only watched a couple eps of the cartoon.... But I still super love this deep dive and the costume emerging from it. Thanks!
Your writing and wit feels almost as amazing as your costumes and fashion design! This was a really fun and funny video

I'm so in for this journey. The items you create are simply, astoundingly, beautiful. Thank you for making us a part of this.
Your cosplay is stunning! Also I loved learning about your design process AND an analysis of pokemon character design! Literally perfect for me!

It's honestly such a great series of videos essays about Pokemon, historical fashion, and cosplay, and this was an amazing finale!
this makes me so glad to read, thank you!!
I've wanted a video like this for a looong time. Thank you. I have a passion for costume and character design and creation.
Appreciate this very detail oriented project because I'm making my very first DIY bookcase
I really love this style of work vlog, makes me want to dive down a research hole and design some costumes
I appreciate your slow craft approach as opposed to my chaos demon lifestyle. Gives me hope. Also, gens 2 and 3 are my favorite versions.
Your dedication to this build and your creations makes me want to go create and indulge my creativity so much - so inspiring, I am obsessed :)
I had no idea that the world had gotten so big. To be truthful I stopped paying attention long before the kids stopped watching. It's funny that the grandson found all the old dvds and vhs to start following. The next gen is hooked!
Your take on things makes me think and I love the care and attention you put into your creations!
Im so hyped for the props! Love watching those final bits come together. Impecable and incredible sewing skills as always, one could only dream!
