This literally went from being one of the most heartbreaking scenes in any anime I've ever seen in recent memory, to one of the happiest. I couldn't even see the screen I was crying so hard.
Untilyou learn that healing the body parts of the heroes after Mankai now created a taint on the Divine Tree which necessitated a regular sacrifice of six Miko (Togo being a Miko candidate herself) to heal the DIvine Tree by literally burning the six girls in a ritual that implied they would burn for eternity. And suddenly your happy ending turned right back into darkness.
ever since they used mankai to defeat the last soul thingy I couldn't stop crying even up till now, I can't stop crying IT'S SO SAD 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 but by the time you've read this, I would've probably stopped crying
Reminds me a bit of the final scene in Legend of Korra... Actually, now that I think about it, both Korra and Togo have giant chests and turquoise color schemes, both were wheelchair-bound and out of the action for three years, after which both struggled with feeling useless, both have to deal with otherworldly vines growing on everything, both ripped a hole in the fabric of reality (though that wasn't really Korra's fault and she definitely wasn't trying to destroy the world), both have friends that wind up essentially raising their younger sibling after their parents were killed, both are gay for an eternally sweet, kindhearted red girl who fights with gauntlets... Brb I have a crossover fic to write.
+donlim2010 really now? then perhaps having a yuro kiss to close it out would've been called for but the hand holding was nice. also I would like an ova just to see a little more of what they did afterwards
Freddy Gutierrez You're in luck, you should read Sonoko After then. It's happens after the anime. www.baka-tsuki.org/project/index.php?title=Washio_Sumi_wa_Yuusha_da_Aru:_Sonoko_After
i am already in 2017, and i have watched the two new prequels films, and men the second movie is Sooo sad, now waiting for the third movie and then second season in fall
THIS SCENE MADE MY BRAIN NOT WORK FOR A SECOND CUZ ITS CONFUSINF CUZ I DIDINT WATCH THE FIRST EPISODE UST WATCH THE FIRST EPISODE TO NOT GET YOUR BRAIN NOT WORK AND SLEEP JUST WATCH THE FIRST EPISODE
Man, this felt.... disappointing. Two whole dedicated episodes of emotional struggles and hardships only for it to go “And then everyone is back to normal now.” I still enjoyed this show though but damn I feel let down in those last few minutes
Season 2 brings an explanation (which expands on already existing books). Basically the entire premise of the series is based on Japanese mythology and it ends up being that it wasn't a miracle at all. The surviving past hero we meet in season 1, sacrifices herself to the Tree God to restore the current heroes. And what do you know, there's even worse unsaid crap about their "benevolent" god, like how six "miko" have to be "burned" for eternity to preserve the barrier protecting the world from the Heavenly Gods and how Togo is one of the new Miko candidates for said ceremony. Also, the end reveal is that the God that was "protecting" the world is represented by an eight headed snake. In Japanese mythology the eight-headed Dragon, Yamato-no-Orochi, demands the sacrifice of young women in exchange for the safety of the humans living in his territory. He's said to be an enemy of the Gods of Heaven, and the God of Storms, Susanoo, hears the tale of the humans and thus fights and slays the dragon.
LeonGun8 A good story doesn’t expects its audience to learn Japanese history just to understand what the hell happens in it. Literally the only thing they could have done to fix this entire scene for me was have them still recovering from their injuries at the end and only have them fully recovered in the next season
A japanese story does expects it's "japanese audience" to know it's own history and myths. The whole fucking setting is japanese mythology 101,starting with the Taisha and the setting of the god they are tasked to protect (and the whole concept of leaving offerings to the god). Basically, the story was never written with westerners in mind. If that irks you then many anime will do so as well considering this is not even a problem exclusive to this show alone.
I don’t have problem with mythology that isn’t my problem here, what I DO have a problem is having people read supplementary material just to understand the plot of the main story. Imagine if season 2 never happened, the plot would be left hanging and unsatisfying due to a copout rushed happy ending
Fair point but that's kind of the trade-off of a multi-media franchise. This series was designed as such from the start, with the Light Novels, anime and manga all being pieces of the story. There's not just the light novel prequel of Togo's previous team, there's a light novel of the very first Hero team 300 years before the events of this show which also contained a bonus chapter of another hero from a few hundred years after. And then there's also the light novel that covers the events between the end of season 1 and the start of season 2 and explains precisely why Yuuna was able to recover. The anime, all of the light novels, and even the Visual Novel, were all designed as a concept together. Whether this is a good concept for a franchise or not depends entirely on the fan and there are indeed many who don't like the idea of having to catch up on different materials just to see the whole story. I remember US game developers love taking this approach to their games too, with companies like Bioware loving to release several novels explaining intricate details of their gaming franchises which become important for future titles.
I like this anime but I do not like the ending, this ending ruin the settings and make their sacrifice sounds like a joke. If you do not need any prices for mankai, why did you took so many things from those innocent girls? This make no sense, illogical

I really wish they would have shown Sonoko during the montage of the recovered Heroes.
They did, in one shot during the final stage scene. She was standing in front of the sea, and her bandages fell away.
