Knitting Help - Helix Knitting (Jogless One-Round Stripes)

  • In this video I demonstrate a technique for working one-round stripes (think striped hat) with clean color changes.
    THE MATH:
    Take your total number of stitches, and divide that number by the number of colors you want to use in your stripes. In my sample, I have 72 stitches and 3 colors. 72 divided by 3 = 24, so I have 24 stitches between each of my markers. If the number of stripes you want to use don't divide evenly into your stitch count (ex, 80 stitches and three colors), that's okay. It isn't vital that the stitches between the markers are the exact same number of stitches - getting close is fine. In the example I just gave, I would put 28/26/26 stitches in my segments.
    The yarn in my "bad" example is leftover from my Om Shawl:
    www.ravelry.co...
    The yarn in my "good" sample is Berroco Vintage Worsted.
    The needles I use are all Knitter's Pride 16" circulars from interchangeable sets.
    My nail polish is Gelish, "I Or-kid You Not".

    Someone just recommended this technique not for striping but for alternating hand dyed skeins of yarn in garments. I think it's a brilliant application of the technique. It saves you from having to twist the yarns and you don't get a seam.

    Thank you so much for your clear instructions. I have watched dozens of TH-cam videos on this technique, and yours is the easiest 👏🏻Working on a baby hat right now and it’s turning out excellent. I love that you don’t slip 3 stitches. You just drop the color and start with the next color. Genius 🥳

    I LOVE helix knitting! So glad you did a video on it. Remember that pattern you did for round dishcloths? I used one as the top of a hat and picked up the edge stitches to helix knit around it. My grandson loved it. One thing I would mention is the colors twisting up. I line up the colors in order and when I get to the next color I’d move it to the back of the line. ❤️

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried it, but in thinking through it, I don't think it will work. To work garter stitch in the round, you have to alternate knit and purl rounds. I don't think the color trade-offs will look as seamless as they do in stockinette.

    I contacted you about this a year ago when I discovered helix knitting. I'm so glad that you made a video! I've ordered a set of Addi Flex needles because the pattern was easy until I tried to decrease. Combining helix and DPNs was too much for my uncoordinated hands (and brain) to take. I like it how the balls or skeins or yarn are messy and just there on the table. 😆 I actually discovered this technique by accident when I was knitting a hat using 4 colors and I lost count of my stitces and kept on knitting and knitting then noticed that the jog is missing at the starting row. Very good instructional videos. I've been watching all of these and gaining new techniques and styles propely. Than you!

    I love this technique! Is there any reason NOT to divide the number of total stitches by ONE LESS than the number of colors (e.g., for 4 colors, divide total number of stitches by 3)? You would end up changing color at the beginning of the round, but all sections would be the same length (or almost the same, if not evenly divisible). It's what you're doing for 2 colors. I've only done it the way you showed and wondered if I was missing something (or maybe I'm just a math nerd). Thanks!

    If you wanted to have stripes that were 2 rounds deep would you just use 2 balls of each colour and treat them as though they were separate colours? EG if you wanted 2 rounds red and 2 rounds blue, could you divide the round into 4 sections add a 2nd ball of red at the 1st marker, add the 2 blue balls at markers 2 and 3 and then continue as per the video?

    How would you handle yarn overs in hellical knitting?

  • @ralphjnkns
    @ralphjnkns 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think it is important to mention that when you switch colors, at least the first few rows, you need to pay attention to the tension of the last stitch in the color to which you are changing. Some people think you need to pull it tighter, but it's actually the opposite. You want to make sure the stitch in the row below matches the size of the other stitches. If you do this on the first few rows, I believe it will solve the issue of having the first few rows looking wonky.

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you said is probably true, but I think the "wonkiness" of the first few rows is just the nature of working with multiple colors in the spiral. Keeping good tension is always important, but the rows always look straighter after you've worked a little bit in the fabric.

    Is it possible to use two row stripes using the helix technique?

  • @ojaimark
    @ojaimark 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know I’m 2 years late but isn’t the whole math portion unnecessary? It seems like it would work just fine if the sections aren’t the same length. As long as the colors stop before they catch up to the next one it will all work out. That means for three colors it’s just knit a ways on round 1, pm, change color, knit a ways farther, pm, change color, knit until you hit the start of the next color. No counting or math needed. Or if you have a lace/cable section you can keep that whole as it’s own section regardless of the total stitch count and then just divvy up the rest by eye.

    Hi Stacey. I have two questions for you, please. The first question is, can helix stripes be applied to crocheting? I am making an amigurumi ball and I'm using up six colors of remnants. My second question is, can you work in the helix pattern while increasing stitches in knitting or crocheting? I also knit and can knit the ball if this won't apply to crochet. Thanks so much.

    Thank you for doing a video on this! I was frustrated with this very problem a month ago and couldn't get my stripes to look right doing the normal jogless correction. I'm excited to try helix knitting. I do have one question. If you want to have the top of the hat be a solid color to match the brim, how do you finish off the stripe parts and begin the solid part? Thanks! You're amazing!❤

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just switch to your solid color at the beginning of the round, and on the second round of the top of the hat, work this color-jog correction technique: th-cam.com/video/jrVP129BnRg/w-d-xo.html (This link is to the traditional color-jog correction technique, when the stripes are 2 or more rounds.)

    Does anyone know what to do if you’ve done a helical section and then want to go back to single colour for the last section? Do you just keep knitting with that single colour once you get back round to it or would that look uneven?

  • @deannajan25
    @deannajan25 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    my problem is not the jog. I learned how to fix that. My problem is that when I change color at the end of the row, that place where I change colors whether it is after one row or every two or three rows, is always a loose mess. How do I keep the tension even with the color change row. And the looseness is there even when I do not change color at the end of the row.

    I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I've come up with two mistakes it appears. One is at the place with the color changes it looks like a purl stitch; and secondly I'm doing magic loop with this in the place where the color changes keeps moving over to the right is that normal? Like it started halfway between the rabbit ears of the magic loop and then next thing I know the color changes 1/4 of the way in from one rabbit ear instead of halfway in.

    I thought I figured out some new math with this, where instead of n colors = n change points, you would do n-1 change points, so 3 colors, 72 stitches would change every 36, so you'd get to do a half-run in each color, with fewer color swaps. 4 colors would then be done every 24, and you'd always have length-24 runs, nice and even. Well, it works for the switches, I think, but it also means 2 colors would start on top of each other at the same point, opposite the 3rd, instead of spaced evenly every 120°, and I don't think you can move the switch points once they're set(?). This also might screw up whatever you do at the top, too, e.g. you wouldn't have nice, evenly-spaced end points if you switched back to a solid color. I'm a new knitter, though, and haven't tried helix knitting yet, so maybe this is all nonsense :)

    Hi Staci! I learned how to do magic loop for hats and have really gotten the hang of it, and now I want to move on to color work. How would I change colors using magic loop, or is it not possible with magic loop and only with regular circular knitting? I don't know how to use DPNs, so I'm trying to just focus on magic loop.

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do colorwork with magic loop, but it can cause tension issues. It is better to use short circulars. For instance, if you're knitting a hat, it is far easier to use 16" circulars instead of magic loop.

    If, say, I’m kitting with two strands on a toe up sock, how do I bind off with the two strands? Or say I want to start knitting the cuff with just 1 strand, how do I “stop” the other colour? Just knit over it?

    • @verypinkknits

      Yes, just pick one of the colors for the BO, and use that color to BO all the way around. (Don't overthink it, you'll just stop using the other color.)

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't worked that situation exactly before, but my assumption is that you can work a standard color-change jog correction, if you're switching to a solid colors (or two or more rows in the next color): th-cam.com/video/jrVP129BnRg/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you for this tutorial, it's very clear and makes this technique seem very simple. I don't suppose it can be used for wider stripes? I recently completed a sweater with random stripes, all different widths, and I ended up with a lots of jogs at the end of the round.

    I have a question about flat knitting, my edges just seem to be loose no matter how hard I tighten them. They just seem messy. I’ve been looking through your videos to see if you have something on it but I can’t seem to find anything /:

    I recently made some hats for newborns using helix knitting. They turned out so cute!

    I’m interested in trying this technique but I’m not good at double pointed needles. For the decreasing top of hat. I’m better at magic loop my question is can this be done with magic loop?

      Yes it can. Pretty much anything that can be done with magic loop can be done on DP's.

    this reminds me of basket weaving that I saw done in a 3-rod wale... it chases the next level around...

    So..... I am a beginner knitter, practicing on slouchy hats and having a ball. I ran into this jog-thing when I decided to do several rows of knit stitch (circular needles), then one row of purl, then more rows of knit stitch, etc. etc. JOGs! I tried a bunch of different ideas to fix it, but being new, I don't have much of an arsenal yet. This helix/jogless idea comes the closest, but I am using only one color. Got any ideas (short of cutting my yarn for each jog) for me?
    Also, I wanted to thank you for your many great videos-- I've learned a ton, with your clear and concise help.

      Correcting the jog in garter stitch is a bit different than correcting the jog in stripes...I have my own methods for how I deal with it, but I haven't yet figured out real standards that I can put into video for people to really count on. But it will happen! Tons of knitters have asked me for that video, lemme figure it out, video on the way!

    One question though - what if I need to increase or decrease stitches? 🤔

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You work the increases and decreases as you normally would, it doesn't change how you work this technique.

    Great video! I'm working on a hat now and it is just magical. One question: If I wanted to switch to one color at the decreases where/how would I make that transition? I want to use the same color as the ribbing.

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't done this, you might have to experiment a bit...my thought is that you'd just start at the beginning of the round with the solid color.

  • @judyhbaker

    Amazing! I'm wondering how this would work in knitting striped socks if you want to have solid color heels and toes. Probably drop the color(s) you don't want then restart helix pattern after heel?

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sock toes and heels are usually knit in rows, not rounds. So you would interrupt the helix knitting rounds, complete the toe/heel, then pick up with rounds and helix knitting again.
