I was an international student at Brunel University West London. When Sunday came, sometimes I would wear my Nigerian Attire (Agbada and Fila) to church. I got sarcastic cheers from colleagues and the odd chuckles here and there lol. Happens that, the jeerers were mostly of African Descent albeit affiliated with Britain from an early age. I noticed that the more frequent I wore it with time passing by, the less jeers I received. This brings me to my next point that Ethnocentrism can be eroded or made benign when cultural infusion consistently occurs. You cannot consistently laugh at someone for 4 years otherwise the joke would be on you.
I’ve witnessed a couple times where American men who wore kilts into the supermarkets and people would stare and laugh at them, but it was all in good heart though, I even gave him a thumbs up because I thought it was pretty awesome to be so charismatic. It does take a specific kind of confidence to wear traditional attire during a normal non holiday. Imagine if a German man walking into downtown wearing a lederhosen, I bet a lot of people would stare, laugh, and cheer him on.
For some folks in America never has studied the other cultural or leaving from their comforts zone. And only watch and hear from social media, than jump a head no knowledge of their own.
If they used social media, I feel they'd have a better understanding. But yes, I run into a lot of people who have absolutely no desire to understand other cultures.
@Zosia Aniela I'm starting to get the jest that you guys think I'm Chinese...? Erm..I am not, I'm Korean xD (Sae Mi Kim is my real Korean name but I guess when it comes to Asian names, most of you think it's Chinese) I've heard Ghenhis Khan is considered a hero in China but to me, like you said Zosia, he sounds like a mass murderer who roamed around on his horse slaughtering other people. And about your immigrant grandparents, I think it's equally disgusting how they (and their descendants) are treated as outsiders and excluded from American societies purely because of their backgrounds. Talking about being discriminated, I've felt that all my life growing up in Southern England as often the only Korean kid in the neighbourhood so I know what it feels like to feel completely excluded. Though I've met way more nice people than racists. I've briefly learned about Irish, Polish and other immigrants getting injustice treatment in American history and like you said, they deserved better than that.
@@Glumping Not the first time xDDDD I'm used to it but it is funny how they're going on about the discrimination they received and completely ignore the fact that they can't tell Korean names from Chinese names (and I assure you, the difference couldn't be more obvious, only if they paid a little more attention lol). Then I'm no different, I wouldn't be able tell the difference between Russian names and say, Czech names. So I kept quiet about it...till now....xD
When I was a new immigrant to canada , one of the co-workers spelled out a a package of frozen lunch letter by letter and and pretend to mockingly teach me how to read it and read it after him. He thought or pretended to think I do not know how to read because I am a filipino , a third world inferior country so he thought I am uneducated and unable to read. While I kept quiet, my other co-worker (canadian) shut him off telling him that I've probably read more books than he has in his lifetime and that I can actually count numbers in 3 other languages too.
What can we do in the United States to update standard curriculum and persuade teachers to teach about more different cultures and parents and role models to promote tolerance and acceptance instead of prejudice and ethnocentrism?
1:41 I disagree mister, there is no advantages of ethnocentrism. Nations are not much to love to begin with, borders and states and tolls etc are just tools of who can govern what, throughout history people have created and disbanded nations as a means to keep their current power to themselves, nation states to begin with are a bad sympthom of ethnocentrism, world leaders through history have used nationalism and culture as a means to play on peoples feelings in order to create borders and in turn gain power. Logically the more globalized and less bordered the world gets the more we’d be able to develope technology, work together as humans and cure deceases and discover the secrets of space or even the depths of our own seas. “Generating pride and self-confidence” that is something each individual human has to do for themselves. Gaining self-confidence by simply embracing pride in your “ethnicity” is just a weird and really desperate way to gain self confidence. Find a meaning with life, start working out and eating healthy, get good jobs, good educations and start a family then you should get a way to gain true self pride and self confidence.
Mexicans are Native Americans too. They are made up mainly of the Aztecs, Mayans, and Inca(n)s that fled north to avoid Spanish conquistador rule and established the country of Mexico.
The only ethnocentric thing I'm guilty of is judging people based on their accents. If someone has a hard to understand accent, I may think that they need to spend more time learning the language that they are speaking, without first thinking of how well they speak their native language, as well as other secondary languages. 😅
Hi John! I am a student at Elon University as I was planning using this video as a source for my essay. Which credentials did use and where did you get this information from.
What about that cultural thing where a parasitic culture or nationality tries overriding other national identity and cultures.....Britain sound familiar.....also this is not what ethnocentrism is....your video completely misses the actual meaning......look into....for example Britain invading Asia... America...Ireland....etc....and then trying to force the "culture" of their "lovable" nation on those countries in particular......because it's egocentric to it's own cultural values...
You need to get educated or get a life. The natives of this land (some call America) might feel like the feather is way to much. Ones culture can be different person to person. Just because hisher is native American doesn't suggest they'd be wearing feathered headgear. Stop focusing on skin and culture and instead focus on love. Have some respect

Very informative and understandable in terms of definition and examples of Ethnocentrism. Thank you and keep up with your work.

Ok

You are right!! And that’s called “ignorance or illiteracy” Most Americans need to learn their history. They don’t even know where they came from!!
One thing I never understand about those Americans that tell others to go back to their land. 'What are you doing on THEIR land yourself...?'
Like how the chinese oppressed koreans for hundreds of years themselves? No race is really free from the blame of being ethnocentric
@@successkim7920 I guess so. At least they could stop being so nationalistic after all these years.

You should be top comment. That ethnocentrism is more relatable than, like, "the Nazis," or, "the KKK."
Maybe he was just trying to help u bc he wasn't sure
