    Thanks for the video. I followed your instructions on a 2017 Special Edition last evening. Here is a tip for anyone installing who doesn't want to break tabs on the old usb hub to remove. That box that the USB comes in is the hardest thing to remove. So instead of removing it, when you have enough room behind the assembly, insert a flat top screwdriver to press the bottom left tab (from behind) and leave the screwdriver inserted. Then from the front side using your thumbs push the top two tabs and the pull forward with your fingers. The USB hub will pop out of the box saving you from removing the box or breaking tabs. Great upgrade and fun little project if you don't mind pulling apart your car interior. Good opportunity to clean areas that don't get cleaned.

    For anyone who watched this and wanted to faint or second guess a self-install: I just finished installing this in my 2017 and did not need to remove ANY middle console area at all. I just popped the clips off of the top of the old AUX box from the side (from the glovebox), and pried the box out with little effort. This shortened the job down to about an hour. Everything works great, and I love it. :-)

    I was contemplating doing the install in my 2018 Mazda 3 (unit also located in front console) but after watching this, I think I will reconsider doing the AIO tweak, using the serial hack but I suspect that is not going to fly either as my MZD firmware is already updated to 70.xx

    • @spawnofsteve

      There's another video of a hack where the faceplate of the old console unit tabs can be drilled and will be popped off, and then the wires are just fed through without removing everything. Search "android auto install hack" I think. I was deterred after watching this video since it's way too involved, but I'll be trying the other method.

    All you have to do is yank off the face of the old unit (a thin piece of plastic). This reveals four holes where a screwdriver or other thin tool can be inserted which releases the clips. The unit will then slide right out. We do salute you for your sacrifice all those years ago though, lol

    Helpful video. An additional tip. As shown in the video, the USB hub is only held in by 4 tabs. It's possible to slide 4 thin items (I used steak knives) in the crack where the tabs would be and then push the old USB hub out from the back with a long stick. It's not easy but it eliminates the need to remove the center console to switch hubs.

    Hey guys if you're skinny like me you can get away with only removing the ac trim, the head unit and the glove box. I snaked my arm through a hole on the left side of the glove box and used plastic spudgers to blindly unclip each of the 4 clips on the USB hub. It's pretty painful and difficult but it's the least destructive method and takes the least amount of disassembling.

      Update: That day has come today. Installed the Android Auto Module on my 2017 Mazda without removing everything. Ripped off the front face of the old USB hub and then poked away at the four tabs while pulling it out with pliers. I tried poking at the two tabs from the top and pulling but because I had the manual AC version Mazda, it was blocking one of tabs. Overall took about 3 hours of trial and error and I would say it was worth it.

  • @SlowCarsFastSFV
    @SlowCarsFastSFV 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Update FW first! The center trim and vents were stressful getting off, but just wedge it loose and pull steadily with a good amount of force until it releases. Also, just use the new hub to figure out where the clips are holding the old one in. Take a thin flathead and push it into the 4 clips (pretty deep in) and wiggle it out. Makes it so much easier.
