    Performed by Third Coast Percussion
Sean Connors, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin, David Skidmore
    ---------------------------
    ABOUT THE PIECE:
Through his operas, his symphonies, his compositions for his own ensemble, and his wide-ranging collaborations with artists ranging from Twyla Tharp to Allen Ginsberg, Woody Allen to David Bowie, Philip Glass has had an extraordinary and unprecedented impact upon the musical and intellectual life of his times.
His collection Aguas da Amazonia has experienced multiple lives on different musical instruments. Glass’s 12 Pieces for Ballet, originally composed for piano, was arranged by Brazilian musical group Uakti for their own gamut of instruments, many of which were custom-made and built by the performers. This new version of the piece was
renamed after the Amazon river and its tributaries. Drawing on both the Uakti arrangement and the original piano music, the members of Third Coast Percussion arranged a handful of these pieces as part of its multi-media project Paddle to the Sea, utilizing mallet percussion instruments and other unique instrumental colors such as melodica, desk bells, and almglocken (tuned Swiss cowbells).
    ---------------------------------
    ABOUT THE ENSEMBLE:
Hailed by The New Yorker as “vibrant” and “superb,” Grammy-winning quartet Third Coast Percussion explores and expands the extraordinary sonic possibilities of the percussion repertoire, delivering exciting performances for audiences of all kinds. Formed in 2005, Third Coast Percussion has developed an international reputation with concerts and recordings of inspiring energy and subtle nuance.
These “hard-grooving” musicians (New York Times) have become known for ground-breaking collaborations across a wide range of disciplines, including concerts and residency projects with engineers at the University of Notre Dame, architects at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, astronomers at the Adler Planetarium, and more. The ensemble has also designed free iPhone and iPad apps that allow audience members to create their own musical performances and take a deeper look at the music performed by Third Coast Percussion.
The members of Third Coast Percussion -Sean Connors, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin, and David Skidmore-hold degrees in music performance from Northwestern University, the Yale School of Music, the Eastman School of Music, the New England Conservatory, and Rutgers University. Third Coast Percussion performs exclusively with Vic Firth sticks and mallets.

Exquisite. I have followed Philip Glass since 1971 and these musicians have truly captured a beautiful canvas for his music. Bravo.

That's the first time I've heard that, its enchanting, Philip Glass never ceases to amaze me.

Crotales aren't cymbals at all. They are tuned, precisely and generate a crystal clear long duration ringing sound. Quite a unique sound.
I have not heard them bowed before this piece. Interesting effect

@@ems7623they're not that far off! Another name for the crotales is antique cymbals

@@roylangtree2362 Sean Connor and Third Coast Percussion did this arrangement - I'm not sure from memory, but I believe the original arrangement by Marco Antônio Guimarães for Uakti in partnership with Philip Glass doesn't have crotales (most likely it doesn't, since Uakti used to build all their own instruments). The very original of this piece, a piano etude by Glass, doesn't have crotales either (obviously, since it's a piano etude 😅)
