The XJ9512 mill I've got is specified up to 20 mm face milling. Likely using this 50 mm face mill contributed to chew up every tooth in the middle plastic gear in the transmission. Yes, some steel cutting was done. Changing inserts for aluminium was never tried but would surely give a better result on aluminium.
Never practised fly cutting. Guess it makes no difference for radius larger then 20 mm.

Yep I’m the same with my mini mill. I stick with my fly cutter I made now.

I have the exact one too with some of the same results. First thing I did was made sure the same number of dots are going outward. (There is ether one or two dots, molding marks). It was I bit better. Then took three inserts out (as mentioned above) better results. Make sure the head is trammed. (Cuts better one way and not the other). I’ve got a Bridgeport clone and this cutter has only one insert now, stays in the drawer too.

You might actually want to try a heavier oil for ferrous metal work. It's a good use for used motor oil as it's already spent as far as using it for cars goes.

I bought one of these face mills about 4 years ago, and came to the same conclusion as you Mark. OK for removing a lot of metal to start with and then fly cut to finish. Hardly ever use it now. May be useful if I ever got a bigger mill. Cheers Nobby

I think your right Nobby, its too big for the mini mill 👍

I've got one and don't like mine either. I have one I bought with triangle inserts and 3 inserts and I like it much better. Must be the geometry of the inserts.

I had same results as you, did try the uncoated tips as well with better results on ali, less galling and recut. I also found when I ran a dti on the tips, when it was in the machine that they were all at different heights, only by 0.01-0.02mm but still you would expect them to be bang on.

I did struggle, I guess my mill is just not rigid enough 👍

@@EnglishHobbyMachinist possibly, but I have a warco major mill and had similar results to you. I stick to the fly cutter for good results.

@@paulrayner4514 I might do a little experiment and remove three of the cutters just leaving one 🤔

@@EnglishHobbyMachinist go for it, run at higher speed it's just like a fly cutter, or try a dti and see if you have 2 opposing tips at the same height and try running just them 2👍

Never had any luck with mine either tryed all speeds upto 1800 could still feel grooves finished up with a dti on the cutter in the mill and all tips at different heights so it was only cutting on one tip at a time so it was no better than a fly cutter I think it's luck of the drawer with these cutters good videos so carry on

It was worth a try, I might revisit it at some point 👍

You have the wrong inserts. The really annoying thing about these facemills from china is that they are sold with totally inappropriate inserts. They tend to be the cheapest inserts available which are ones for heavy roughing cuts. They'd work fine if you could take a 5mm deep cut but you can't. Have a look at the inserts sold for aluminium as they will work so much better for you. Also worth looking at the KM12 type facemills that have 45 degree cutters, they work very well. Don't waste your time trying to build a smaller holder for the inserts you have, it wont help.

That looks a bit big for your mill. I have a bit bigger mill and I limit mine to 40mm. Use quality inserts, it makes a difference. For Ali use uncoated inserts designed for Ali and you will do better. I can't flood cool so I don't use coolant with TC as the fluctuation in temp can cause insert chipping, and they can take the heat. I have just machined down a cast iron block with good results using 560rpm and 0.5mm cuts.

I love mine, its fitted to a PMV25 and works a treat, the inserts I have are different from yours, I think that's your problem? also noted that you didnt seem to have the quill lock on?
