    My friends got a Peavy 1x12 and my other friends just got a Fender 2x12 and I’ve used the Fender for the jangle/chorus and reverb sounds and the Peavy for the gain. I’ve miked each speaker and panned the fender hard left and right. It sounds amazing.

    I find it interesting that you put the reverb before the modulation effects, especially considering that the reverb has stereo outputs. I'm guessing that the unconventional setup is sort of the point of this video. But it would've been cool to see the full stereo I/O on the H.O.F. to see what that would bring to the party.

    I run a stereo rig jamming in my basement (I was a FoH & Mon engineer for 15 years before changing careers, so pretty nerdy with respect to signal flow and gain structure). While I have a few cool stereo pedals, the TC Mimiq is one of my favourite purchases. Usually I run it on (1 dub, wet & dry volume matched to taste, and tightness to taste). A really great piece of gear for a single guitarist looking for big full tone. Cool video. Cheers

      It depends on what you want. If you want to take advantage of pedal that deals with stereo effects(some has dry signal in stereo output and only pitch changed in mono), you can use two amp with fx loop and matched output watts for cabinet/speakers. So you put your effects in fx loop of amp that your guitar is plugged, and plug the stereo signal from pedals on return section of other amp fx loop then turn up volume of both power amp at same level. Now you have a stereo system.

    Some great sounds. I find sometimes folks have a notion of "stereo" coming from the days of the Beatles, when stuff was panned hard left or hard right. The goal is really to create a sense of space and animation/movement.
    One kind of pedal that almost requires two amps is any sort of rotating speaker emulator. Try one out with one amplifier, and the user is likely to say "sounds a bit better than a chorus, but not THAT much better that I'm plunking my $250 down." Try it with the outputs going to two amps and the thing comes alive. Not *quite* a true Leslie or Vibratone, but damn close. And the reason is that the sound moves around. It's not "stereo". It just MOVES and swirls and fills up the space. It sounds "bigger".
    Some amplifiers come prepared to run things in stereo. The old Roland JC-120/60 amps did so, as do many others that come with "stereo chorus" built in. I have a Fender SK20 Sidekick that feeds 10W a side to a pair of 8" speakers for a stereo chorus effect, and comes with a two channel FX loop so that one can sidestep the built-in chorus and stick whatever you want in there. The spaciousness is rather limited by the form-factor, since the "sweet spot" for a pair of 8" speakers in a small cab is pretty, um, "specific", but it's a great platform for testing things out in stereo without having to use two larger amps.
    Which leads to my final point: the farther apart the speakers, the fuller and more animated the sound. Just don't go crazy. The only time I ever stepped up to a mic and completely forgot what I was supposed to sing was when I had a Vibratone cab rotating slowly on my left and a second amp set for slow tremolo throb on my right. There was a little TOO much "animation". That's probably why the old Ibanez Flying Pan (combination phaser/auto-panner) never really grabbed hold. It was just too disorienting. Cute effect, but NOT something you could leave on without falling off the stage because you're dizzy and confused.
    Space makes it better, but moderation makes it usable.

      Excuse my ignorance. Is stereo just meaning two? If I have a combo amp with 2 speakers, is that stereo? If I have two combo amps and I am playing one guitar going to both amps, is that stereo? What will be considered mono?

    • @markhammer643
      @markhammer643 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nicksonthevet "Stereo" would require that either there are two distinct sources of audio signal, processed individually, *OR* that a single common source is processed in two different ways. So, if I feed my guitar into two identical amps, with identical speakers, and identical control settings, that's not really "stereo", just better sound reinforcement. If I feed my guitar into two different amps that have different sonic characteristics, and they each have their own speakers, that is considered stereo.
      The old Roland Jazz Chorus amps took in a common signal, but fed two different versions of that signal - one real-time and the other with varying delay to produce chorus effects - to individual amps, with a speaker dedicated to each. Same overall cabinet, but each speaker provided a different sound. VERY rich sound. I actually own a sort of "baby" version of that, made by Fender - the SK20. It also has a single common input that splits into two power amplifiers with an 8" speaker for each amp. One gets non-delayed signal, and the other gets time-varied signal for chorus effects. But it illustrates the difference between *processing* in stereo, and *hearing* stereo. With two 8" speakers in a small cabinet, you get the rich stereo effect if you stand within 5-6 feet of the cabinet. But move farther away than that, and you may as well be listening to a mono setup, because the two channels essentially blend together in air.
      Does that clarify?

    My little trick for stereo is a simple tremolo on low speed and medium to low depth in ether L or R of the stereo signal. adds a subtle effect to the sound and is dead cheap. For a double tracking effect a stereo delay (or 2 of them) with 7-12ms delay time can do a reasonable job. Not as massive as the mimiq, but still usable. Finally a stereo signal can be routed through an audio interface into a DAW with something like a Valhalla Supermassive plugin and back into the FX returns of the amps. Usually the latency of such as setup makes subdivision unusable when it comes to delays, BUT this plugin offers so many reverb sounds, that it feels very close to cheating. For less reverb in the face wet signal might be routed to one amp only.

      Drum & Strum I agree. I still sense a doubling effect with a mono mimiq but it's very slight. In stereo it's amazing though. That's why I mentioned the new evh chorus that was just released. You just turn the intensity down all the way so you don't sound chorusy. It definitely thickens a mono amp and gives it a 3 dimensional sound. I'm normally not a big fan of mxr, but they killed it with that pedal.

    Love my mimiq pedal. I found when tripling the sound(little switch down) the speakers are more likely to go out of phase giving an unpredictable phase sound. That can an be a good thing. I mostly keep the little switch in the middle or "doubled". Technically, you can use it with a mono setup but it is rather underwhelming giving more of a weak chorus/phaser like sound. Stereo is definitely where the mimiq shines. Now, once I can afford 2 bravado amps I'll be in heaven! Single dad, 4 little kids so it might be a little while. Ha!

But if your amps aren't the same, you can re-introduce some hum that the Twin City takes out via its ground lift. Otherwise, it's killer. It is funny how majority of guitarist can't figure out stereo. It does have have some problems, but it is worth it for a massive tone, it just depends on the setup and quality of fx you use. I try to use just enough to fatten the stereo image and not bury the tone of the guitar, which is easy to do. My favorite method is wet/dry/wet!

    I think what you’re doing with the chorus is what every owner of a JC120 has discovered. Subtle stereo chorus creates a big soundscape. On a more technical level, what is happening is one side is dry and the other side has a pitch vibrato. Just putting out there.

    Why not put the Reverb last? I would suggest the Dracarys first, the Arion chorus next, keep stereo inputs and ouputs for every device after the Arion chorus, passng thru the mimic, then delay, the Reverb last. I bet that would sound great. They don't all have to be on, but those would keep the stereo image passing thru and blend nicely.

    • @mattgilbert7347
      @mattgilbert7347 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but there's something about a Chorus last, after echo, that sounds really nice. The Visual Sound H2O is a good example of that (even tho it is wet/dry and not stereo).
      It's kinda like having a Leslie amp running.

    • @JRP3music
      @JRP3music 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could put a chorus last, if it has stereo in and outs. Generally, I would never use it that way. For me modulation fx start where the stereo image begins. Longer time based fx go later. Why so the fx will blend better. The delays and reverb will carry the modulation sounds. I used to use a rackmount setup. I liked using the tremolo/panner last some times. I used to have BOSS PN-2 tremelo/panner that had stereo inputs and outputs. Having that flexibility makes a difference. I don't like time base fx: reverbs or delays to not have stereo inputs and outputs. It crimps, the stereo signal flow. You can often add chorus last with a mixer. My Rocktron Replifex has a rotary speaker configuration. I only use Chorus for a few things. It is not that of an important effect for me. Before, I really understood stereo fx setups. I used 3 amps: I had 2 Rickenbacker Road amps and a Crate G60. I would use sawed off drums sticks taped together to make an Arion Compressor and Metal Master switch on together at the same time. Then I would use a Arion Flanger, Digitech Multiplay and Arion Chorus last. It was a goofy setup. I was dealing with no stereo inputs and outputs on any of those effects. I prefer Rack fx, but when I went to pedals all my Time based, and even modulation fx all have stereo inputs and outputs to allow flexible positioning. I won't buy anything stereo that doesn't have stereo inputs or outputs. I only do mono for overdrives, noise gates, eq, etc.

    I'm having trouble finding the perfect stereo tremolo pedal. I'd put it at the end of my chain so the whole sound moves. Delay > reverb > mimiq > tremolo.
    There are some existing stereo trem options out there but they all have different flaws. SD Shape Shifter has no level knob. Super Pulsar is enormous and powerful but confusing. Supa-Trem2 has a mix knob but not separate depth and level knobs. Strymon Flint does stereo but controls are super limited.
    In other words, I'd love to see a Latitude Stereo. It'd have: (1) 2 switches - tap and bypass, (2) depth, (3) rate, (4) shape (sine/square/triangle), (5) phase, and (6) stereo ins/outs. All in an enclosure the size of the Latitude Deluxe or smaller. I'd pay $250 for that. Subdivisions would be swell (see what I did there) but not at the cost of size or any of the priority features listed above.

    Playing in STEREO is AWESOME (I do it, too), BUT... I think it's only and really plausible if you are a singer-songwriter, a "live-looping" artist and/or the only guitar player in your band. Otherwise, if you play in band with two guitar players, you are forced to play on one side of the L-R spectrum (and your bandmate on the other side) to maintain a balance in the mix, so the stereo rig no longer makes sense...

    Brian... Great sounding instructive video. I wonder if the Mimiq and reverb could sound somewhat as good when you (anybody) would have the two amps forced to be literally side by side... as is usually the case when the whole band is playing on smaller stages? For most of us, that's around 90% of the time and as much as I'd like to go stereo, and with the space restrictions, I think that this kind of stereo spread can only be achieved in using in-ear monitoring in a band setting. I wonder what your thoughts on this might be.

      People run stereo in a single cabinet. Left speakers and right speakers. It's not not as effective as putting physical space between cabinets, but it most certainly makes the sound much bigger than a mono cabinet.
      Many Marshall 1960a and B cabinets are stereo. They have two jacks on each cabinet, and a switch to toggle between stereo and mono within the amp.
      Whenever you see two Marshall heads on top of a single cabinet, it's a stereo setup. or even two heads on a stack of cabinets.
      Many horizontal 2x12 cabs are also stereo capable, but again, need two amp heads.

    I used to own the Arion Stereo Chorus. Currently, I run a TC Electronics Nova Dual modulator. That is where my stereo signal begins, from there it goes to an Eventide Pitch Factor, TC Electronics Nova Delay, then BiYang Baby Boom Stereo Reverb. I use the Boss MS3 switcher to manage loops in front of my Mesa Boogie Nomad 100. The left half of my stereo fx is in the loop of the Mesa. The Right goes straight into my Musicman HD 150. My rig is not complicated. The Mesa Nomad 100 is the master and the Music Man HD 150 is the slave. Wish, it had an fx loop. I talked with Bruce Egnater about modifications for it. It would be trickier since it is a solid state preamp. Both amps use 6L6 power tubes at half power. I am a big a fan of stereo in and outputs for time based effects. I want a pedal that sounds analog with longer tape delays and a Reverb built in for another rig. When you run in stereo, the point where your first stereo fx is important, as to add other stereo fx devices that must have stereo inputs and outs. Thanks for doing this, I feel that stereo is really great for the lone guitarist. Another trick I do is blend the piezo signal panned slightly over with stereo clean guitar parts.

    Hi Brian, first I have to say you made amazing pedals, I do have the Slortion in my chain and it is amazing. I will like to know if is possible to combine two different amps brands with two different wattage. I have a Fender Deville 2x12 and a Archon 50 watts with a Marshall 4x12 cab, my last pedal in chain is and H9, both amps in clean directly into the input.

    I wish someone would come out with a pedal like the mimiq that was also a stereo graphic eq. Also I'm fairly certain the Hall of Fame isn't "true stereo". AFAIK only TC's Helix phaser is actually stereo and not dual mono.

    Mr Wampler! Very interesting video as usual. I noticed when listening to the video with my headphones that the TC Mimiq seems to lose a bit of volume when turned on. It reacts exactly the same for me. I have a widespread great sound but I always have the feeling that my low end reduces a bit and the volume in general decreases a bit. Is this normal ? Is this what we call the out of phase issues? Thank you

  • @michaelwillis8730

    Inn the beginning of the video the volume was louder but when you switch the Arion to stereo the volume drops which leads me to think there is some comb filtering going on.

    So I have a stereo delay pedal but delay sounds trash in front. Are u suggesting I use a stereo chorus to go into the fronts of both amps and set them individually? I'm trying to get a cantrell sound out of two 6505+112c amps. I know jerry has two amps one set dirtier than the other. My delay in the fx loop connected to the other amps fx in sounds great but I want a different preamp tone.

    It's going out of phase the left channel in my ears is the switching side with the stereo chorus.... The stereo doesn't translate well at all. The mimiq does the thing properly. I'd throw that first pedal in the trash.... Or use a very much smaller amp for the second channel as it's cancelling anyhow...

    In order to hook both amps together like you do, is the only thing your using is a Y cable from the output of the effects?

    • @evertonfrancisco9149
      @evertonfrancisco9149 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @dawnrussell4838

      Brody Swisher been doing stereo live for 25 years.
      When I use a mono rig, it sounds blan , but stereo
      Only sounds really good it you have the stage room
      To have your cabs 2 or 3 feet apart. Sometimes
      Real estate on stage can be scarce . If you mic your
      Rig that's a problem too. Need 2 channels. But the
      Sounds behind you is pure studio tone!

    Mimiq is fantastic but I can't decide whether to put it before or after my last effect which is a Ventris stereo reverb. My board lays out better with the Ventris as the final, but if there's a good reason to use Mimiq as the final (yes feeding 2 amps), I'd reconfigure the board. Any answers out there? Thanks, Doug

    Using an amp that has 2 instrument inputs on the front. I plug guitar in 1 input and the 2nd input goes to a couple pedals and into the front of a 2ond amp. That way 1 amp gets only guitar the other gets guitar with fx. Ok is that called stereo or what would that b called.

    • @wampler_pedals
      @wampler_pedals  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s not stereo usually. Generally the two inputs are a low and high. The low is cutting the signal back a bit. They are in parallel, hitting the same circuit in the exact same place. So running two signals into those two inputs simply runs them in parallel, and ultimately mono. For stereo you will need two different amplifiers.

    Just came across your video awesome sound, I question on stereo. I have a harley benton 2x12 cab that has to vintage 30 speakers, one input is 8ohm mono or 16 ohm stereo with a switch that selects either. My question is how do i use the cab in stereo? Cheers

      You may not be able to with that cab without requiring it and also using a separate amplifier, one for each speaker.

    i bought the HOF reverb for the loop of both of my amps. but that HOF sends the same signal to both amps making it dual mono

    • @ryans9029
      @ryans9029 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's reverb. Of course its dual mono, there is no motion in reverb. The point of the two outputs is so that you can use it in a two amp setup if wanted. So that a single pedal can supply both signals with reverb, and since reverb usually comes last in the chain, you can't "split" the signal after the reverb. It NEEDS to go in and come out of the reverb in two separate signals, so as to not mess with any choruses or delays, or other modulation effects that are separate and BEFORE the reverb pedal.
      It allows two separate signal paths to both get reverb, without mixing the two signals

    Question please,so if I have a multi-effects pedal that is stereo and a reverb pedal after it that is also stereo, do I only have to go mono out of the effects pedal tamano in the reverb and then stereo out of the reverb to my speakers?or do I have to go stereo out of the effects pedal to stereo inn on the River band stereo out of the reverb I guess my question is if I go mono outtu Mano en of any stereo pedal and just go stereo out of the pedal it will be stereo? My multi FX does ping pong delays etc but i dont see how going mono out of it will deliver stereo effects as long my end of chain is stereo out, is that how it works, thanks in advance!!
