Thank you, Lisa for the very informative video. I have a prime spot to plant two fig trees and I have over 200 potted fig trees. I need to pick two varieties to plants in the prime spot in ground. This video helped me on what two varieties I’m going to pick to plant there, I’m in zone 6B. Wish me luck thanks again.

Good luck! 200 potted figs! You must be a good figgy parent! haha! Wow. The in-ground figs I have are Peter's Honey (I think, it was a cutting shared with me), Brown Turkey (another cutting, so I'm not 100% positive on the variety, but it's VERY cold hardy and leafs out all the way to the tips of the branches), Chicago Hardy (big box store) and Olympian (online nursery, again, very cold hardy but it's likely planted in a spot that is too shady).

I grow figs. All my figs are in barrows that go into the garage for the winter. I have planted a few figs over the years in the ground and wrapped them. However, the problem I had was mice. When they get into the wrapped plants they destroy them. I've never tried a variety that can overwinter without wrapping. The other thing you do is have shoots from the roots. My figs look like a traditional tree. One big trunk and all the shoots come from the top. Maybe my trucks don't like overwintering outdoors in 6b.

The ones I have in big pots are looking poorly this year... leaves starting to yellow... I'm fertilizing this week to see if it helps. I had trouble with mice when I wrapped my in-ground figs. The basket of leaves and then wrapping that worked better for me... no mouse damage.

I put layers of leaves, brown cardboard, green grass clippings, rotting branches, garden waste and leaf mold around my fig trees then top all of this with a few inches of sandy forest soil at the end of summer and add a thick layer of leaves. Insulating the roots is important both from cold and evaporation. Also add some rusty iron or iron nails in the soil and bone meal. Water young trees a lot too. ---
If you only get occasional hard freezes you can cover the tree and use a portable power station inside a cooler (or plastic bag to protect it) to power 10 or more watts of full spectrum LED bulbs or an incandescent bulb underneath the covering and use the wireless sensor of a cheap indoor/outdoor temperature unit to monitor the tree. I`ve covered young trees with plastic barrels, buckets, plastic, tarps, blankets, leaves etc. I also insulated the barrels with another covering.

That's so great! Lots of figs this year? There's fruit on the potted one and the in ground tree in the rain garden. The rest are happy trees but not much fruit!

Those are some of the hardiest but LSU Gold and Celeste are the cold hardiest of all according to researchers in Louisiana.
