    Thank you so much for very clearly demonstrating this function. It works! I used it for a random image picker.
    Just one problem I keep getting (please kindly reply/comment if you had a similar problem and/or a solution) - the picture "placeholder" I've used kept duplicating itself, and I end up with many pictures pointing to the same named indirect function, lumping on top of each other. I only noticed their existence because they are sometimes not exactly on top of each other (like not very neatly stacked newspaper where you see the layers sticking out from below), and my file quickly got very big after I used a few of these functions. Anyone had a similar problem?

    Hi Leila, I hope you are well. This is a great video that I have followed to the letter, but unfortunately my end result is #REF. I am using Excel 365, does your solution only work on 2019? My worksheet fails at the =Flag stage and gives me a "Reference isn't valid" error. Is there a simple step that is commonly missed by other people that I may have missed also?
    I hope you can point me in the right direction. ***EDIT*** Figured it out - my names in my drop down list data have more than one word, when I named the cells containing the pictures excel replaced the spaces between the words with an "_" . As soon as I changed the names in my drop down list data to be exactly the same (ie with the "_" instead of a space) it worked perfectly. Thanks for a great video :)

    Hello Leila,
    thank you for educating video, it really helped me to understand VLOOKUP with images.
    Is it possible if afterwards we decide to extend list of flags in future (like extension of database) to simple refresh it somehow or all steps must be done from beginning?
    Reason for asking is that I would like to have some personal database on one Sheet which should be filled in with new data in future. On other sheet I would like to use your function which should be automatically updated with extension of previously mentioned database Sheet. Possible?

    Can the undetected function be used when looking up a drop down list from a search filter formula? Also will it pull images when the names have - or / in them? I was having trouble getting it work? Anyone know? Trying to create a inventory system in excel when you search for a part number it also shows you and image of the part or location.

    Hi Leila,
    thank you for this useful video. I benefitted a lot.
    i am struggling with few things though. I am working on a multiple drop down menu and my selections are not unique, for examples the same header might have two different pictures because it depends on the selection before it. is there a way we can make the picture depend on two different drop downs? in my case there is no way of making the headers unique because they are size ranges and those will always be the same for certain features.
    I managed to cheat the system by adding spaces when there were no pictures included to make the headers unique, however, this is not working with photos because I have to create a name manager that does not recognize spaces or special characters. can you post a video that has headers that repeat but have different drop downs or provide a formula that allows the dropdown to depend on two lists? or a way to include headers with spaces without showing the "_" in the selection as a space?

    Thanks Leila. It is cool. I have a question to ask please. As defining Name in Name Manger, Excel doesn't allow space. To get around, I put an underline in between words of a country name. However, it looks bad in presentation to select the country name with an additional underline. Do we have a get around solution for a better presentation please?

    • @LeilaGharani
      @LeilaGharani  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Karen. In that case, all you have to do is to use the substitute function inside indirect. I'm not at my PC now but I provided an example in the comments below here in response to a similar question from someone else. Please have a look.

    Thanks for video, Leila :-))
    It seems to be too complicated.... The only Name you need to use is Flag.... INDIRECT is also not necessary.
    The Flag formula will be different... it is simply INDEX and MATCH.
    At the end, you've got one Name only...just Flag.
    Flag =INDEX(Master!$A$3:$A$8,MATCH($C$2,Master!$B$3:$B$8,0))
    This time, INDEX, MATCH is a reference!!
    :-)))))

    Beware of using this in a workbook with VBA "for" and "with" loops. It seems to slow code execution down by a factor of 11 (eleven)! Remove the linked picture object and you're back to normal speed again. You can verify by re-building the picture object and re-running. Things go back to slow as molasses and almost crashing during execution. I can't figure out exactly whats going on here, but I'd guess a bug. Took months to figure out why macros were running so slow!

    How do you get past the added underscore on a team with two names such as Ivory Coast or New Zealand as it returns in the name manager as Ivory_Coast & New_Zealand??
