I think a lot of people instantly jump on any excuse of why they lost, so when they see something that gives the teeniest of tiny advantages they immediately go “oh, that’s why I lost, they have filters.” And this message quickly spread and is now just ingrained in the minds of a lot of players.
This is exactly it bro. Similar to Kaiser, I have been in top 500 in apex, masters in overwatch and I am half decent at DBD.. the amount of players who cant improve past a certain point, is because they stop looking at things they can do to improve their gameplay, and will find things to blame to explain why they lost instead. You said it so well dude! 😊
@@nickmyers3065 it’s not that big of a deal and it’s not cheating even behaviour says that maybe changing contrast and colours is more cheating but even then.
I think people that think filters are cheating are just coping. I've been playing with them in the past for around 500hours and compared to now where I dont use them anymore I gotta say theyre as you've said completly fine and dont make that big of a difference. The graphic settings in this game are abysmal and I'm happy we have the possibility to change that through filters.
I don't believe its an insanely "unfair" advantage from filters but I do believe they give an advantage. Filters allow you to see clearer, it can make certain colours stand out more (such as red glow or scratch marks). Don't get me wrong I think they are super ugly and I don't personally use them, but I still believe they give an advantage because otherwise why would anyone use them? The discussion about crosshairs (while back) being okay was wild to me, could be a cool video idea trying games as huntress with and without a crosshair and seeing if it makes a difference. I believe the devs said both are fine so is that it is, I guess my view point is they are clearly fine and not against the rules but I still believe filters give enough of an advantage for someone to make their game super ugly for the slight edge.
The main problem is, even if they decided its cheating, how would they stop you? They can't stop you from changing your monitor settings. They can't stop you from changing your Nvidia settings. They can't stop you from taping a crosshair to your monitor. Changing the game itself is something they can control, that's hacking the game. But filters and even a crosshair is outside the game, and therefore not something they can control, even if they wanted to. The most they could do is ban any streamers using filters or crosshair software that shows up on stream, but no developer in their right mind would ever do that.
I believe filters do give you an advantage over the normal filter, but that's just because the normal filter blows. They need to brighten scratchmarks by 50% and have them get darker the longer they're active. It's SO hard to see scratch marks in tall grass maps
Some people like to argue that "anything that gives an advantage = cheating". If one side brings meta and the other doesn't, the side that does is at an advantage, too. Are meta perks/items cheating too then? It is a reoccurring theme though. If I have to "cheat" in the eyes of biased folk so that I can actually see what I'm doing/what's going on, so be it. A shader doesn't make you a god at the game. Cheats though? They arguably do. But why complain about the rise of cheaters, if one can complain about someone having slightly brighter scratchmarks, right? Why complain about the horrible map colors, if you can complain about someone counteracting bad design choices that shouldn't have been made by the dev/design teams to begin with? Why complain about the horrible game pacing, if you can just complain about the aura reading build killer that saw you crouching in a bush, because they got their brightness turned up a little and your Distortion didn't do jackshit? At this point we are fighting a losing battle. If little Timmy with 120 hours in the game says that it's cheating, it surely is. Can't argue with the logic there. According to them I should win 100% of my games, because I'm obviously cheating. Funny how in reality I rarely win my games. (This is mostly sarcastic, if people haven't noticed.)

As someone who's become light sensitive in my old age, I have my monitor dim after a certain hour or turn on the blue light filter. And because I'm old, and an idiot, I often forget to turn this filter off before I play DbD so everything becomes a very crushing black that I can't see anything. Which causes me to use a brightness filter through NVidia just so I can see what I'm doing.
And the end of the day its a workaround the lack of visual options in dbd, things that have been standart in most games. so no its not cheating. it actually makes the game playable to some ppl and that's fine. i just hope we actually get more settings in game to help with this, like how long it took a fov slider to come
People act like you have to go and mess with the game files to put on filters, dbd literally greenlit the geforce experience to allow filters. That along with the fact you pointed out that youve literally always been able to turn on the brightness in your tv/monitor. Instead of people arguing to take away just give console the same settings. Being able to see better helps both sides not just one, as well as people who cant see due to a medical situation or the envionment theyre in.
Personally, I think any time you tamper with files and gain an advantage, it's cheating. The filters are not in game, you have to tamper with the game actively, and it gives you a visual change to what is available in game. If it's a setting in the base game/irl that you alter to gain an advantage, you're just using the tools given to you (such as the colour blindness modes).
Short answer: If you are using it to make a very dark game easier to see, whether for comfort or due to personal physical issues? No. If you are using it specifically for an unfair advantage, or program it to GIVE an unfair advantage? Yes.

Also I don't understand the streamers/content creators who use filters, just seems like it would cause more trouble than worth, seeing as some troll can just disregard your skill in game as "cheating".
I use the game mode filter on my monitor, which turns up the sharpness, brightness to a point where you can easily identify targets faster. Nvidia filters apparently dont work on dbd on my end so i had to resort to that i dunno. Even so, its not really cheating since you can literally do that in every game anyway regardless. The tools are there, might as well use em because i sure as hell i'm not gonna play to barely see shit
I think it's one of those cases where it's reasonable to an extent, but it does become cheating when players purposely set their filters to allow them to see in a way that the developers did not intend. Is it something the developers can do anything about? No, they can't. However if you are turning your brightness and gamma up or changing saturation and colors so much that you are able to see for example Midwich as a well-lit area, then yes that's technically cheating. It's supposed to be kind of dark and hard to see.

People who complain about filters are just making up excuses about why they lost. If filters are cheating, does that mean people with expensive monitors with built in filters + crosshairs cheating? What about people who play at a higher FPS?
Here is my arguments for why it's ridiculous to call filters cheating A colorblind person that has red/green colorblindness (Deuteranomaly) is using a filter to change the Red colors to something they can perceive better, let's say a blue. So since they changed their colors to be blue instead of red, which is easier for them to see are they cheating? Most people would say they are at a disadvantage anyway since they have a disability and cannot see red so using filters is fine. Now what they might not realize is every single humans vision is slightly different, even if two people are both "color sighted" they might perceive colors differently. Some people might be able to naturally see red better than others. Now let's take someone who has "normal color vision". If they use a filter to make the Reds brighter how is this any different than the colorblind person changing the Blue to a Red. All it does is make it more easy to see, just as the colorblind person did. Why should it only be someone with a disability that is able to use something that makes accessibility/perception easier, shouldn't anyone be able to make the game more accessible, even if they do have "perfect vision"? If you think a colorblind person isn't cheating using it then you have to conceit the argument that someone with "normal color vision" should also be allowed to use this. A third part of my argument is a hardware argument. EVERY monitor on this planet is ever so slightly different in color, sometimes this can actually even be drastic. So now would you make the argument that using a monitor that naturally has more vibrant Red colors is cheating? If you do think it is then how would you even regulate that? It is nearly impossible to standardize colors digitally for any monitor/screen. If you want a good video that explains this on this Linus Tech Tips made a video on the Pantone Plus Plastic Standard Chips and how they set the standard for color physically since on a monitor colors are not the same.
This game doesn't have a brightness slider and basic graphics settings like every other game. It took them 7 years to add an fov slider, it took them 6 years to basic graphical settings. Also, on the topic of an fov slider, this whole discussion about filters reminds about survivor players not wanting an fov slider because "it would give an advantage" and that "the killers fov is supposed to be low". Yes, a higher fov gives a slight advantage over a smaller fov, but an fov slider is the most basic thing in first person games, even rocket league has it. Yes, the game started as a hide and seek game and hiding was a major part, but those times are far gone, nobody cares about it anymore. Also, is a person who changes the settings in nvidia control pannel, an app that literally comes installed with your pc that has an nvidia graphics card cheating?

And my replies were just short posts laughing at them and making fun of them. I'm not normally like that but I couldn't believe someone was this worked up over filters.
by your own definition this is cheating?? something unintended by the devs that the other team cant have access to unless they download a third-party client (nvida in this case) that creates an unfair advantage. trapper is already weak his traps don't need to be spotted even easier than they already are
You have access to the same settings through TV and Monitor options built into the very device you are using to view the game. So everyone DOES have access to these. Pay attention
If you use comp filters youre cringe lil stinker but if u use them to make the game prettier then thats fine. I like to win but i aint gonna break my back doing so and I find filters to be unesscary and just kinda eye rolling
filters for me are def a form of cheating, the same way people who play FPS set all of their settings down in order to maximize their framerate to gain an advantage but the difference between framerate and filters is the fact that its not intended for people to brighten their screens and make colors pop more giving an unfair advantage to those who dont use them, the difference between a maxed out filter surv vs vanilla surv on macmillan is insane it goes from a dark map thats made for horror to a bright colored fun house
for filters its a messy thing, i mean people abuse filters to get an advantage so in a sense it kinda is cheating, especially when most people have to use 3rd party programs to use it to use filters, however at the same time for instance my friend wants to use filters because of motion blur and bhvr not having an option to turn it off, for instance someone having filters to make tracking red things more vibrant, that would make tracking so much easier if u use filters compared to the base game, so much so that it would be an advantage *shrugs*

It depends. Filters that make everything look brighter and more vibrant, definitely cheating. Colourblind filters, not really
It's cheating gg
for filters its a messy thing, i mean people abuse filters to get an advantage so in a sense it kinda is cheating, especially when most people have to use 3rd party programs to use it to use filters,
however at the same time for instance my friend wants to use filters because of motion blur and bhvr not having an option to turn it off,
for instance someone having filters to make tracking red things more vibrant, that would make tracking so much easier if u use filters compared to the base game, so much so that it would be an advantage *shrugs*
