I've never thought about it, but it's very interesting how Quasimodo and Frollo each recognize their feelings for Esmerelda as a powerful, transforming light, but while Quasimodo sees her as a touch from Heaven, Frollo sees only lust and violent Hellfire. You can find the reflection of a person in how they perceive love.
Frollo: "Forgive me father for I have sinned." Archdeacon: "Speak, son." Frollo: "I have a perpetual endowment for a gypsy girl all society dictates I should despise, deplore and make moves to nullify, restrict, bring around to my thinking....or vanquish. Or it may just be myself... oh, such conflict!" Archdeacon: "... is there anything else, my son?" Frollo: "yes... I fear I may be giving way to the temptations of pyromania and that it may degenerate into passionate, city-wide arson." Archdeacon: "I see, I see. Make three 'Beata Marias' and indulge in an orchestral-backed rant of all your darkest feelings, ideally in front of your open fire." Frollo: "But of course."
Okay I get how everyone is talking about Frollo's song Hellfire but can we just take a moment to acknowledge how beautiful Heaven's Light is? It portrays Quasimodo's pure innocent love for Esmeralda perfectly. Always gets me right in the feels

He then tried to burn her at the stake when she spurned his affections and tried to kill Quasimodo.
did you ever notice that the bells from the start of the movie in "the bells", the bells from "havens light" and the undertone from "hellfire", are all the same, just in different tempo and notes, its all through the movie
Frollo: ....is blazing in me out of all control!!! Guard: I think we're gonna need some pepto bismol here quick Frollo:...Like fire, Hellfire, this fire in my skin... Guard: and perhaps some Neosporin as well
King Keegster I was raised Lutheran and can say with some certainty that they do not use "Beata Maria" in Lutheran prayers. They do in Catholic, but I didn't know that until I was older. The use of the name Maria is not usually a Protestant thing, so a young child who wasn't raised Catholic probably wouldn't immediately think he's using the Latin name for the Virgin Mary.
King Keegster l was in contact with cristians during my childhood, but l always thought they only praised jesus. I had no idea who the heck maria was and why would frollo care about her opinion
@@milliedillman4881 Please allow me to bring up the Goddess Ishtar from The Tale of Gilgamesh, humanity's oldest story. She really, REALLY did not take well to being rejected. At all.
And it's called "Hellfire" because it decrees Frollo's damnation. He had a choice until the invocation to the Virgin Mary "don't let her sear my flesh and bone", but he totally killed that piety with the subsequent "destroy Esmeralda and let her taste the fires of Hell". This song has multiple "signs of damnation" as many saints who visited poor sods called them.
I just noticed another detail. When he's singing the bits "It was the Gypsie girl, the witch, who set this flame", and "if in God's plan, he made the devil so much stronger than a man", the chorus is singing "Mea maxima culpa." He's blaming everything else for his sins, even going so far as blaming God. Just like when Adam blamed God for eating the fruit. Mea maxima culpa, indeed. This song is a freaking masterpiece.
The song Heaven's Light. I kind of relate to it. I want a girl who's loving, caring, kind, sweet, and gentle. I want a girl who is always there for me. Also, the song Hellfire is my favorite villain song.
I feel these songs fit in perfectly with the question Clopin asked at the beginning: Who is the monster and who is the man? The songs seem to have the same theme: Esmeralda. Heaven's Light sings about her with love and compassion while Hellfire sings about her through lust and obsession
I've always wished for Heaven's Light to be a little longer... >_> And then when I'm just recovering from the beauty that horrid Frollo starts singing about how much he wants poor Esmeralda.
It's a really cool effect with the latin mixed in. "It's not my fault! _(My fault!)_ I'm not to blame _(My fault!)_ It is the Gyspy Girl, the witch, who sent this flame! _(My greatest fault!)_
This song is really intersting in how both parts contrast with each other. Heavens light, is warm and gentle, affectionate. Hell fire is dark and obsessive. Follo kind of represent an argument from bigots about how God is a wrathful being, notice the line "choose me or your pior." That kind of exactly represent some ideas about gods conditional love on humanity.
Its funny because in the book for this movie the villain Frollo is actually really understandable in his reasons for doing things and wasn't actually that terrible of a person. love this song the most!!! these chills and the conviction is amazing.
Okay, no, Frollo really is understandable (and one of my favorite characters ever) but "not actually that bad of a person"? He's a rapist, dude. Since the beginning of the book he already is a terrible person, just a more repressed one, but at the end... Frollo is what /every/ terrible man is. Frollo is THE terrible man.
Frollo was nicer in the book, yes, but he was still an ass. He WAS still the villain, after all. Disney just likes making things a little more black and white.
Yeah, and it's something I can't stress enough really. I mean, compared to Phoebus in the book, he was a pretty cool guy. Frankly, everyone in the book was pretty bad or unlikable in their own way. Except for Quasimodo, because, well, he's Quasimodo.
This song in a nutshell answers Clopin's obvious riddle of "Who is the monster and who is the man?" Quasimodo's humble nature sees the crowd in awe and wonder, Frollo's ego views them with contempt and disgust. While Quasimodo views love as a blessing he wishes for despite his doubt that he will ever have it, Frollo sees it as a lustful curse of the devil that he must defeat by any means necessary. And while Quasimodo saw Esmeralda as an angel that brought him hope for happiness, Frollo saw her as an evil witch sent to cause his damnation. Such mentalities show you who is who within the riddle. Quasimodo who yearns to simply be accepted: to be given the chance to love and be loved shows his humanity. Frollo on the other hand behaves so detached from society: feeling better than everyone else and yet succumbing to the depravities that lay in his mind to where he'd be willing to destroy everyone for his own selfish goals with little care of the consequences.
I've always thought the line about God making the devil stronger than a man was inaccurate... Surely Frollo, being the 'righteous' man he claims to be would know that temptation would be a weakness that, if thought about in a righteous manner, would be easily disregarded and passed over; but, as much as that line irks me, this is still one of my favorite songs XD
I see it as more that he's just casting the blame onto others rather than himself. He really seems to be the seven deadly sins rolled into, ironically, a priest.
John Otero Mm, haha, I have read the book, but it's been a while; quite frankly, I was probably too young to pick up on that fact, so thank you for pointing it out :3 I know the book and movie are different, as most books that are turned into movies are :3 Like, I know the ending is extremely different, and personally I like the movies ending better, simply because only one person dies instead of pretty much every main character...
Frollo is a sick man, like all villians. i guess what makes him scarier than most villians is simply the fact that someone like jafar or milificent or ursialla wont be real but there are really people out there like frollo i think thats why he is refered has one of the best villians
How I imagined if the Phantom of the Opera had sung this: Darling Mother, How far I've come from wretched life And with my gifts I am justly proud Darling Mother, You know I'm so much smarter than the Selfish, mundane, cruel, malicious crowd Then tell me, oh Mother Why I see her singing there Why in spirit she still has a hold I need her, I breathe her Her voice of a heavens gift And yet she will never ever know None like her The Briar Her love I yearn to win Divided The liar How could she just choose him It's not my fault She had a part She's the tainted rose Who pierced my fragile heart It's not my fault It was God's plan He let the devil make me more than just a man Protect me, oh Mother In her presence I befell And lost power of the music of the night Punish Christine Daae There will never be farewell Our bond is bound for the afterlife (I'll find her even if I have to BRING DOWN this opera house!) None like her The liar Oh Christine, for concern Choose me or Else dire Be mine or you will learn There's no point of return There's no where else to flee Soon she'll be mine Or she will learn!
I really do think that Frollo is the worst(best) of all of the Disney villains. He really is just a cruel, sick old man. This makes him, in my opinion, the most evil.
I'm not sure if he's really evil. I've never seen the film, but based on Hellfire it seems he just fell in love though someone as "pure" as him shouldn't, and is trying to get rid of his desire for Esmeralda.
Thomas Kenney In truth he is the worst kind of Evil, because he doesn't see himself as Evil. He believes that what he is doing is sanctioned by God, and for the betterment of Mankind in the long run.
I have to say as a French I've always seen this movie and listened to the songs in French and I've always overlooked Heaven's light because the French singer (though very good) makes it very cheesy and so do the lyrics... But those lyrics just gave me shivers :D
I still think this song would make an awesome Hallmark Valentines Day card, especially those ones that you can record things on. i would record this and use it on a girl, just to see her reaction.
If you really think about it, rather than a “villain”, I believe that like all of us, Frollo fell victim to his sinnings. He makes it clear that he wants god to forgive and have mercy on him. He unlike other Disney villains, Frollo was misunderstood and that ultimately lead to his insanity. It’s fairly normal that humans may do sinful things, so judging Frollo is like judging ourselves.
Jordan Moore You were right about the book being so much more darker and haunting. I thought Frollo in the movie was crazy enough, but dude has like no chill.
I totally didn't understand what was going on with Frollo and Esmerelda when I watched the movie as a child. Then when I got older and watched it again as a teen I was like "Oh, he just wanted to smash". hehe oh teen logic...Now that I'm older, I see how Frollo's song symbolized his hatred and yet his (arguably erotic) obsession for her. Huh. It's fun to go back to your childhood and analyze what you once knew as an adult.
The live action movie remake I hope for, just to hear Live Action "Hellfire". If this ever happens, I kinda want to see Peter Capaldi play Frolo... Anyone agree?
OMG! I actually understand a bit of the latin in this song! The first lines are saying "I confess to the omnipotent God, the blessed Virgin Mary, the Archangel Michael, and the blessed saints and holy apostles." and the part where the chorus (guys in red hoods) say "Mea culpa" means, "My fault". Wow, it reallly IS contradictive. xD I feel smart now.

best disney song. reminds me of some of han zimmer's best work. i know han zimmer made the scores for some disney movies but they are certainly not his best work. not to say the scores are bad by any means but he has made so much better music because he's that good at making music.
I mean, I totally understand and that's a very common thought. I guess it all boils down to people seeing this conflict which is so much deeper than any other Disney character flaw I've ever seen... A man who has absolute power being driven to move against his morals by his own base desires. Frollo is a truly interesting character and in my opinion the best Disney villain of them all character-wise... The reason, I guess, boils down to the fact that it's ultimately very interesting.

Sanctis Apostolis Omnibus Sanctis (to the Holy Apostles, to all the Saints [note: 'sanctis' can be 'holy' or 'saint'])
_Continued in between Frollo's lines:_
Et tibit Pater quia peccavi nimis (and to you, Father, that I have sinned)
Cogitatione verbo et opere (in thought, word, and deed)
Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa (My fault, my most grievous fault [note: maxima actually means 'largest' or 'greatest,' but that sounds strange])

did you ever notice that the bells from the start of the movie in "the bells", the bells from "havens light" and the undertone from "hellfire", are all the same, just in different tempo and notes, its all through the movie
Frollo: ....is blazing in me out of all control!!!
Guard: I think we're gonna need some pepto bismol here quick
Frollo:...Like fire, Hellfire, this fire in my skin...
Guard: and perhaps some Neosporin as well
LOL. Classic! XD
+k2r2m03ry way past that... I think a euthanasia is more appropriate. :P
get him a condom and a mental hospital while your at it
stop that! You totally suck. why am I cracking up laughing at that vision now...nooooo!!! LOLOLOL
Talk about trouble with the fireplace.
I find it strange that I'm not necessarily religious but I'm so captivated by the lyrics.
I remember I spent most of my childhood confused over who the hell maria was and why frollo was singing to her if be liked esmerelda so much
Were you not in contact with Christians? Or did you just not put the two together?
King Keegster I was raised Lutheran and can say with some certainty that they do not use "Beata Maria" in Lutheran prayers. They do in Catholic, but I didn't know that until I was older. The use of the name Maria is not usually a Protestant thing, so a young child who wasn't raised Catholic probably wouldn't immediately think he's using the Latin name for the Virgin Mary.
King Keegster a lot of people dont use the same name as some do even though Maria seems to be most common
King Keegster l was in contact with cristians during my childhood, but l always thought they only praised jesus. I had no idea who the heck maria was and why would frollo care about her opinion
Beata Maria is actually Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus
It took two things to fully comprehend how dark this track was:
1) Older age
2) Translation of the latin lyrics.
Wow, even today it disturbs me.
Frollo was yandere before it was cool
Yep~
History's first yandere
@@milliedillman4881 Please allow me to bring up the Goddess Ishtar from The Tale of Gilgamesh, humanity's oldest story.
She really, REALLY did not take well to being rejected. At all.
Yandares were never cool
What?
I love the transition from 2:32 from calm to evil tune
You're right
And it's called "Hellfire" because it decrees Frollo's damnation.
When he's singing the bits "It was the Gypsie girl, the witch, who set this flame", and "if in God's plan, he made the devil so much stronger than a man", the chorus is singing "Mea maxima culpa."
He's blaming everything else for his sins, even going so far as blaming God. Just like when Adam blamed God for eating the fruit. Mea maxima culpa, indeed.
This song is a freaking masterpiece.
You know, I wonder if Klopin told the kids in the street about this part...
Mono Nonny he probably did...
Mono Nonny poor kids
He probably killed them

Frollos dating advice #1 imagine her in a fire and then scream at her " Be mine or you will BURRRRNNN!!" then she's all yours!
Hollie Atkins lol
Also, there’s millions of fish in the sea, especially in Paris!
The song Heaven's Light. I kind of relate to it. I want a girl who's loving, caring, kind, sweet, and gentle. I want a girl who is always there for me. Also, the song Hellfire is my favorite villain song.
it's funny this opposition between the light of heaven and the fire of hell. never noticed it before...
My favorite part of the song is from 1:40 to 2:20. So haunting, but also peaceful at the same time. It's rather ineffable.
Yeah!
I can't listen to this song without thinking of all the Frollo/Hunchback YTPs and grinning to myself.
Guys, I just finished reading the original novel and I just have to say: wow.
Flameheart of Thunderclan and it's nothing like the Disney version
You should listen to the soundtrack of the musical. While the music is based on the music from the Disney film, the story is closer to Hugo's novel.
You do?
4:23
me: now Frollo that is not how you play hide and seek
This song is really intersting in how both parts contrast with each other.
Heavens light, is warm and gentle, affectionate.
Hell fire is dark and obsessive. Follo kind of represent an argument from bigots about how God is a wrathful being, notice the line "choose me or your pior." That kind of exactly represent some ideas about gods conditional love on humanity.
Sorry, I have to... he meant "pyre" as in her burning.
Jamie Madrox was* a terrible person at the beginning, not is. Sorry. I'm not that good at English.
***** Dude, it's disney. This was kinda the best they could do.
Love the contrast in these scenes. The purest outlook on love right before the most deranged view on lust.
The first song always makes me cry! I so understand how Quasimodo feels...
Only the Disney version, though. Only the Disney version..
True; it seems the priest that sins terribly is a common archetype... XD
John Otero
Mm, haha, I have read the book, but it's been a while; quite frankly, I was probably too young to pick up on that fact, so thank you for pointing it out :3 I know the book and movie are different, as most books that are turned into movies are :3 Like, I know the ending is extremely different, and personally I like the movies ending better, simply because only one person dies instead of pretty much every main character...
I know.
Absolutely flawless lyrics, tone and deep, dark beauty
This will always be my favourite disney song, the dark and deep lyrics plus the beautifully dark voice
Frollo is a sick man, like all villians. i guess what makes him scarier than most villians is simply the fact that someone like jafar or milificent or ursialla wont be real but there are really people out there like frollo i think thats why he is refered has one of the best villians
How I imagined if the Phantom of the Opera had sung this:
Darling Mother,
How far I've come from wretched life
And with my gifts I am justly proud
Darling Mother,
You know I'm so much smarter than the
Selfish, mundane, cruel, malicious crowd
Then tell me, oh Mother
Why I see her singing there
Why in spirit she still has a hold
I need her, I breathe her
Her voice of a heavens gift
And yet she will never ever know
None like her
The Briar
Her love I yearn to win
Divided
The liar
How could she just choose him
It's not my fault
She had a part
She's the tainted rose
Who pierced my fragile heart
It's not my fault
It was God's plan
He let the devil make me more than just a man
Protect me, oh Mother
In her presence I befell
And lost power of the music of the night
Punish Christine Daae
There will never be farewell
Our bond is bound for the afterlife
(I'll find her even if I have to BRING DOWN this opera house!)
None like her
The liar
Oh Christine, for concern
Choose me or
Else dire
Be mine or you will learn
There's no point of return
There's no where else to flee
Soon she'll be mine
Or she will learn!
You are talented my fellow person-
Yeah!

This is the song that shows the difference between love and lust. I love it.
Quasimodo: Love
Frollo: Lust
I really do think that Frollo is the worst(best) of all of the Disney villains. He really is just a cruel, sick old man. This makes him, in my opinion, the most evil.
I'm not sure if he's really evil. I've never seen the film, but based on Hellfire it seems he just fell in love though someone as "pure" as him shouldn't, and is trying to get rid of his desire for Esmeralda.
No, if u watch the movie u will see that there is more to him than just this song
Thomas Kenney Well thank you, Captain Obvious
I don't remember receiving such an honor but thank you anyway.
Thomas Kenney
In truth he is the worst kind of Evil, because he doesn't see himself as Evil. He believes that what he is doing is sanctioned by God, and for the betterment of Mankind in the long run.
Started out as pleasant, went into the spiritual, then all the sudden, it all went to hell! A great song!
Heaven's Light Makes me misty eyed.
Hellfire is chilling to listen to.
This reminded me of church

thanks :D
Hmmmm true 😟💜
I have to say as a French I've always seen this movie and listened to the songs in French and I've always overlooked Heaven's light because the French singer (though very good) makes it very cheesy and so do the lyrics... But those lyrics just gave me shivers :D
This makes me think of Scar from TLK for some reason.
I still think this song would make an awesome Hallmark Valentines Day card, especially those ones that you can record things on. i would record this and use it on a girl, just to see her reaction.
I LOVE THESE SONGS!!! (but especially hellfire!)
THumbs up for sending the Frozen-like works back into Hellfire.
Heaven’s Light makes me want to cry.
Shit……minus how awesome that transition is and how much I love Hellfire period, it perfectly explains why Esmeralda fell for Phoebus
Let me say this ina local dialect from my country "Oga Frollo no be by force"
I sang this at karaoke once. I’ve never seen such mixed and confused reactions haha.
I'm actually reading the book, 'The Hunchback of Notre-Dame' and was listening to this song.
The book is so much darker and haunting
Frollo is one of my favourite Disney Villains 😍😍😍😍🖤🖤🖤🖤
aww, I love quasi
Beautiful
The live action movie remake I hope for, just to hear Live Action "Hellfire". If this ever happens, I kinda want to see Peter Capaldi play Frolo... Anyone agree?
yes but for me it would be kinda weird - the doctor being a lust-crazed priest/judge.
Love the Disney font.

wow...the plot to this story went straight over my head as a child now I realise just how creepy and sick this story really is...
love this song. but all think of is how he should say 'kissed my face without a trace of fright' instead of 'kissed my cheek' because it rhymes

This is actually Alan Menken I believe. But yeah this is groundbreaking. You'd never see modern Disney do this.
People kept talking about Hellfire but how about Heaven's Light
I mean, I totally understand and that's a very common thought. I guess it all boils down to people seeing this conflict which is so much deeper than any other Disney character flaw I've ever seen... A man who has absolute power being driven to move against his morals by his own base desires. Frollo is a truly interesting character and in my opinion the best Disney villain of them all character-wise... The reason, I guess, boils down to the fact that it's ultimately very interesting.
Awesome, thanks!
Quasimodo sounds like a literal angel

It sounds like it could be in an Opera concert!

Somehow, Frollo's movements on the word "bone" suggest that he's trying not to put an R at the end of the word.
