Never saw Bobby Troupe before now. Been a big fan of London for a long time but Troupe, damn dude. I feel embarrassed for the state of pop music now. Yes, even in 64, this was pop. Crazy how music has devolved.

There's a lot of amazing music out there these days, if you're willing to look for it. I'm in my early twenties, and the only reason I know who Julie Londin is is because of people like Lana Del Rey and Billie Eilish

I don’t think there ever was a singer for a long time he could come up through the ranks of Julie London perhaps Peggy Lee but Julie was phenomenal!!
Julie had the sensuality and bravura that was just so understated yet she was just totally brilliant on stage!

Since 1955, so MANY singers (men and women) have tried to sing "Cry me a river" but there's no one since Julie who could really sing this song, her masterpiece -- she owns this song! Always will.

incredible concert. never seen before. she really was a jazz singer, not just pop. i dont know how i overlooked her all these years. the guitarist dennis budimer has been well respected by fellow musicians in los angeles since the 60's. ahead of his time, he never sought the spotlight like others. he has (still alive in his seventies) incredible technique and could pull off coltrane like runs on his guitar. he played in chico hamiltons group alongside eric dolphy! there is a great album he did with bud shank (on baritone sax) with gary peacock. he has some incredible solos on that.. its called "new groove" he also did several albums (hard to find) on john william hardys label revelation out of los angeles. it was a treat to see bobby troup stretching out, heard a bit of nat cole and ahmad jamal thrown in. great stuff!! thanks for sharing such a great video. have never seen these great artists at such length before. wonderful!!!!

Listening to Julie London at The Latin Quarter (1964) which was located in Nagatocho, Tokyo.....I can walk there from my place in Akasaka. The 1960s still had class before the "revolution" marked the beginning of the end for the U.S. The Japanese (including my wife) know class and quality when they hear it though they may not understand the English.
Great CD-- highly recommended though not sure if its available in the U.S. The CD is somewhat different from this recording but it definitely has a lot of the same content. "Exclusive Julie London Bobby Troup & His Combo 22-23/25-26 May New Latin Quarter"....

I think Webb was also a class act, wonderful of him to give work to his former wife and her then-husband (Troup) so they could support their family.
Webb, it seemed, was a real dad figure to so many actors in Hollywood, giving jobs on all his productions to so many up & coming actors, as well some dependable character actors that were virtually a stock company for him.
But London as head nurse "Dixie McCall" on "Emergency" was a pillar of strength for the hospital staff and young paramedics.

Apart from Julie's and Bobby's personality, looks, talent and professionalism, Jack Webb and Julie London also had a child--so it wasn't that he merely gave work to her and Bobby so they could support "their" family. It was more a his, hers and theirs thing.

I am into vinyl and one day I came across her record Julie is her name, I wasn't sure but I loved the cover so much I thought at the very least I will have a great image. I can't tell you how glad I was that I bought it. I knew alot of the songs I just never knew who originally sang them. That's one of the reasons that I love digging through old records, I might not know what I am buying at first but after I set the needle on the record and listen to it (from beginning to end) I might only hear one song that I remember but it is such a thrill. It's like I'm rediscovering it for the first time/hidden treasure. Anyway I have the original pressing that still plays and sounds great. If you even like her a little (as if you could only like her a little) I highly recommend listening to "Julie is her name" (on vinyl if possible) from beginning to end it is soothing and tranquil, you will not regret it. Especially nowadays, I think it is important to take a little time to unwind.

I've always loved both Julie's and Bobby's singing, hearing both on the radio while in high school, not realizing they were a couple. This very well produced TV show captures both of them at their best. By the time of this recording, Julie had been working in Hollywood as an actress for nearly 15 years, and her performance here, mostly lip-syncing to her pre-recorded tracks is awfully good!
Husband Bobby Troup was responsible for getting her to begin singing in clubs, and then making records. Troup was a great composer of popular songs. Route 66, Daddy, The Meaning of the Blues, and Girl Talk (this one with music by Neil Hefti) are some of the best known. Cry Me A River was written by Arthur Hamilton, Julie's friend since high school. He wrote it for Jack Webb's "Pete Kelly's Blues" TV show (she had gotten him the gig), but Webb (Julie's first husband) turned it down. Soon after, Julie recorded it as an afterthought on her first session for Liberty Records. Julie was still hurting from the divorce, and friends have said that's much of what came through on the record.
A few side notes -- trumpeter Joe Burnett was married to another wonderful singer, Irene Kral, who died early of cancer. The drummer is best known as Dee Barton, here on leave from the Kenton band (where he first played trombone and later drums). Dee was a wonderful composer, and, I thought, one of Kenton's better drummers.

BH scarcely can be a standard in musical terms, pal. Her voice was narrow and technically dubious even if she became a sacred cow. If a standard is needed, then Ella Fitzgerald should be the one. NOT that BH sung badly, but her artistry is located more in the emotional territory than in the musical one

I was surprised to discover a version of "Tenderly" recorded by rockabilly artist Eddie Cochran (one of my faves), which I have yet to hear. This song sure has been recorded a lot, seems to be one of these standards such as "I Get A Kick Out Of You," and "Just in Time" that has been covered to death.
I agree with you, though, Julie London's version is superb. I think Miss London could have sung the Manhattan phone book and made it interesting with her sultry swing.

What a great voice! I've admired her from the first time I heard her, sometime around 1955, 6, or 7, I have her first ("Julie is her name" I think, )album that I bought one of those years, still have it! I saw her in person somewhere along the way but I can't remember just when, anyway, THANKS FOR POSTING ALL THESE ALBUMS so I don't have to get out my old LPs! This is a rare program! She was very introverted and didn't really like performing in public, would much rather just record her songs. So you can see she's a good actress besides vocalist. I watched her on Emergency -- thought she was great in that too. Of course, Bobby Troup was very talented also!

Just noticed that the guitar has a "Charlie Christian pick up,...like Barney Kessel's ,hence the meaty full sound . probably a pity that Dennis never was able to make an LP with Julie London and Bass to make a trio of LSs .... in that format
