Distillation of vermouth. Not very successful. Using an old type retort as you can see in old alchemical paintings. Got this retort with an old chemistry set I bought.

I think the main reason it wasn't particularly successful for you was the glass tube was submerged in the distillate, this causes the bubbles you saw which volatilises the distillate so the efficiency becomes quite low. You also get better efficiency with a water flow around the collecting tube/receiver, back in the day they just ran water over the receiver although you could also use magnetic stirring and some ice.
