    To give other users a rule of thumb... A good ratio for the wrist circumference and the diameter of the watch is between 4.5 and 5. Bigger ratio, watch is too small, smaller ratio, too big. Lets say you have an wrist with 16 cm of circumference , a watch with 45 mm will have a ratio of 3,55 (watch is too big), 38mm ratio of 4,2 ('perfect size') and with 3,2 5 (too small). Off course it's just a 'starting point'. Some watch styles must be bigger (lets say aviator watches) and others smaller (like dress watches). Also your preferences matter (of course)... But i think this is a good tip. The idea isn't mine... I saw in a watches forum a long time ago, so i can't credit the author. (EDITED)

      A ratio between 4.5 and 5 is good? So you're saying a wrist with 16.5 cm needs to wear something between 33mm - 36mm? That just doesn't make sense.

    There is a defining moment in every man's life when must decide a
    question that will profoundly effect his future: 'which Sieko Diver
    should I get, The SKX007, or the SKX013?'
    After watching this video, for me, the answer is now clear.
    Though I might prefer that needle w/ lollipop second hand on the SKX007,
    I've got other watches like that and the second hand w/pointer is nice
    too. I like the minute hand of the SKX013 better and I think the SKX013
    looks better on Mark's wrists, and his wrists are a little bigger than
    my own. So the SXK013 it is!

    I've owned both an SKX009 (same as the 007 but with a different color scheme) and an SKX013. I bought the 013 because it's larger counterpart wore too large for it to be comfortable on me. I'm quite pleased with it; it's easily my favorite and most practical watch. However, there are a few minor differences between the two than just the size and the different hands:
    1. The markings on the chapter ring are significantly thinner on the 013 than the 009/007. I actually find the 013 easier to read, but I've seen people who prefer the 009/007.
    2. There is a dent at 3:00--without minute markers--in the 013's chapter ring, presumably to make room for the day-date window. Although I've never had an issue with telling the time because of this, it seems to annoy a lot of people.
    Both of these can be hard to notice in pictures of the 013, and that's principally because of:
    3. The bevel on the glass can obscure the chapter ring. This can happen with both the 007/009 and the 013, but it is far more pronounced on the 013. This is a minor complaint for me, but it may be more of a nuisance for others. I can still read the time without issue on the 013, so don't let this be a deal breaker.

      I strongly considered that watch myself but ultimately what killed it for me was the spring bars are positioned really close to the case limiting how thick a strap I could put on. I also decided it was too dressy for my tastes.

      Or, like the commenter below, you have a large 8.75" wrist like me. The bone structure of my wrist is 78mm wide. A 51mm or even greater lug spacing is comfortable on me. That's my "cold" measurement. I love my Seiko's, some purchased 20+ yeras ago, but my 42mm Seikos (which were considered 'huge' back then; a Sub was 40mm) look kinda small on me. 45mm looks ok, and 47 is just about perfect. And my wife is perfectly happy with all my other measurements, which match my size 13 EEE shoes. Just sayin, "if the watch fits"...

    The problem with sizing a diver is how wide and tall the bezel is. As a result the dial is much smaller than on a regular watch, and it is deeper inside a watch. People say that 42 mm is big (SKX00x), but what is the size of the dial? 28 mm? On a dress watch, that would be a 33 - 35 mm watch. How many would say, "oh, yeah, that's a big watch"? Also, because of the height of a diver, it looks like you have a small chimney growing out of your wrist. To me, a diver watch to look proportional, needs to be ~ 45 mm, perhaps slightly bigger depending on the bezel. In the end one also needs to answer the question "do I really need a diver or do I just want a robust and reasonably water proof field watch" because the latter can be had with better proportions (larger dial for overall size of the case) and thinner case (hiding an SKX00x inside a shirt cuff is not as easy as people think, particularly on a rubber strap).

    Mark - I just discovered your channel and love it. I have a crazy question you might be able to answer. Have you ever seen a small rubber O-ring keeper that protects the crystal? I’m dating myself, but I’ll try and describe what I’m talking about. I learned to SCUBA dive in Okinawa, JP in the early 80s. I bought a Seiko on the local economy and it came with a “ wishbone “ looking rubber piece. The two circle parts of the wishbone were slipped over the band and the straight part went over the crystal. On the straight part was a small O-ring that slid back and forth over the crystal. Back then, it was to protect the crystal from getting scratched on the coral. It was kind of odd, but all the American and Okinawan divers had them on their watches. I’d like to buy one for old times sake. Thanks Doug

    I have wrists of about 6.3 inches which is pretty small, so I bought the 013 from Long Island Watch after viewing this video. I also bought the Oyster bracelet from Mark and installed and sized it myself. The sizing was easy, but attaching the bracelet to the case was a little tricky. The watch looks fantastic, but after wearing it for a while I was bothered by the size. It just seemed too small for me. Maybe because I'm tall for a person with 6.3 inch wrists.
    So I've ordered the 007 Super Oyster from Mark and I'll resize the bracelet and see if I'm more comfortable with it. I have a friend who wants the 013. It is a really fine watch, especially for the price.

    Marc, Yet another great video. With my 7" wrists, I can also wear either one. Never apologize for another Seiko video. I love them! I'm glad you are carrying the new Recraft SNE448 & SNE447! I am also happy that Seiko had made the Grand Cocktail Time (SDGM001) available in the US. I am shocked that they put it in with the Core Series, and saddened that it is a Boutique Exclusive. Anyway, all it all great content presented very well.

    do you have any recommendations on where to buy a seiko 007 for the best price.. I see so many reviewers and stuff having a ton of these.. I wonder if any of them sell or trade them off anywhere?

    Although I have large wrists, I'm a big fan of the SKX013 because it's more manageable of a size. I've had an SKX007 and felt it was fairly bulky, which makes sense for a dive watch, but didn't work too well for everyday use.

    If the 'K' means 'not made in Japan', where are they made. Does it affect the quality or the cost? Please reply.

      Barclay Sauers it does cost a little bit less if they are the k version. It doesn’t affect the quality or anything but if you really want the skx made in Japan then look for the j version. Hurry and buy one because they are a discontinued model

    Dumb question: Since the distance from lug to lug is pretty much the same, wouldn't the lugs hang out a bit on a small wrist anyway? I have a small 6inch wrist but I prefer the roundish 007 to the long/slim 013. Should I buy for the fit or the look? Thank you.

    • @islandwatch
      @islandwatch  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but it still looks "better" on a smaller wrist, more in-proportion. There are many dimensions that tell how a watch fits; thickness, diameter, crown protrusion, lug length and even the bezel size!

    Not sure if you guys notice but if you have OCD, the smaller skx013 crystal glass cuts in with the daydate causing it to see double for example at 5:40. You can change to a different crystal to fix it. It may or may not bother you. To me its one of those imperfection cringes.

    Hi Mark, great video. I recently bought SKX013K2, great dive watch and thank you for reviewing it. I have a question for you.
    I inherited from my late father Seiko 66-8050 from 1971. on original Seiko jubilee bracelet in very good condition. Only the crystal has little scratches. Should I go for for crystal replacement or leave the watch in original state?
    Greetings from Croatia

    • @TheHynza
      @TheHynza 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      replace it unless you want to sell it. considering that it is a inherited watch, i assume that you don't want to sell it. so buy a decent sapphire and wear it with that. it will not scratch and look better.

    Hello Mark, probably a stupid question but on the 007 I wonder how the seconds hand indicate where it is. The reason for my confusion is that the short end of the hand has the illuminated ball which seem to me of importance to show the correct position when the visibility in the water is poor or simply in the dark; especially when you are diving with oxygen when time really counts, even seconds. Can you clarify this please.

    • @islandwatch
      @islandwatch  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The SERNO's start with '6', which is 2016. Seiko runs a single digit year designator. So how do you know what year it is? 2006 or 2016? Well then you have to know what version of movement is inside it. Like the 7S26 has many versions (a, b and c). Next then you see what decade the movement was made in, then you figure out what year.

    I just received the 013. Great watch. However, it wears smaller than it's 38mm size, even compare to my sarb033. I have a relatively small 6 inch wrist, can I pull off the 007 or 009, or is it too big for my wrist?

  • @ahab8047
    @ahab8047 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Please I need this question answered: I have bought a SKX007, the size of watch itself it nice but my 5:9 inch wrist puts the strap at the second last hole. Hence the strap sticks out on the outher side and looks ugly. My question is if the rubber band is SHORTER on the SKX013, I would then consider getting that one instead.

    • @islandwatch
      @islandwatch  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, it will not fit. Wrong size. Just cut the rubber neatly on the 007 strap.

    I think I am about to buy myself a SKX013, never realised it existed until today, I was originally looking at the 007 as I had heard it wore smaller than its size would suggest, I don't have particularly small wrists but I have a technical hands on profession, and big bulky watches do my nut in when I forget to take them off. Currently daily wear a CWC G10 36mm, but really wanting another Auto (previously wore my Bulova marine star 43mm, always felt it was way to bulky)

    Would you mind telling the width of your wrist? I find it to be a better reference than circumference.
    I have a flat shaped wrist, though it is small in circumference, many large watches do not overlap the edges so they look quite fine.
    Thank you.

      So many people on the Seiko watch forums swear that Seiko has discontinued that watch. The only thing I would see is Seiko possibly changing the movement to the upgraded 4R36 and possibly placing it into the Prospex line.....the watch is too popular to discontinue.

    The lug to lug on the 007 is so small and the case makes it measure bigger than it looks so the 007 isn't too big for even a small wrist.
