- "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" was released on Blue Öyster Cult's fourth studio album, Agents of Fortune, in the spring of 1976. The song was released as a single in July of the summer of '76. The song made it to number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart....(in the long list of songs that shoulda made #1, this tune has got to be in the very top of that list!) It was of course the biggest hit the band ever had and grew to classic stature in a few short years...where it shall remain. A stone classic for the rock ages!

I made a video for this song years ago when I knew even less about making videos than I do today, and it for the last 5 or 6 years it's one of three old autumn-time videos that I keep promising to finish for a Halloween upload (Cheap Trick's "Gonna Raise Hell" and Rush's "Witch Hunt" are the other two)...every year I fail to get one done. So very happy to finally have probably the worst of those early offenders uploaded with new effects and high resolution audio (yeah, TH-cam compression and all (though I'm among those who swear that if you play the video in HD, the audio sounds very much better than most compressed sources...who knows?)....but one day, maybe high resolution audio will be available. That will be a great day for TH-cam and music fans.
I checked out three high resolution versions; including a great sounding vinyl version, but I favored this one sourced from a rip from my old Super Audio CD in 176Khz/24bit.
Even though I got the video done Halloween evening, I really wish I'd had more time to limit the styles some...I was going in about 3 different directions, but ended up just smashing it all together. I'm pretty happy with the result, and at least maybe it won't get as mixed up as the last one by having the audio removed, then allowed, then removed, constant changes to the restrictions for viewing, etc. The one seems to have finally stabilized somewhat (but the damage was done and it's basically nearly non-existent as far as TH-cam rankings). Maybe you guys can help this one float and not sink to the bottom? As always, it's up to you guys to keep it alive.
I hope you enjoy the show....what a song, it deserves a full studio production, but it got my home computer giving her all she's got! LOL! Happy Halloween 2020...who needs costumes....especially in the USA. ;-)
[Lyrics]
All our times have come
Here but now they're gone
Seasons don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain, we can be like they are
Come on baby, don't fear the reaper
Baby take my hand, don't fear the reaper
We'll be able to fly, don't fear the reaper
Baby I'm your man
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
Valentine is done
Here but now they're gone
Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity, Romeo and Juliet
40, 000 men and women everyday, Like Romeo and Juliet
40, 000 men and women everyday, Redefine happiness
Another 40, 000 coming everyday, We can be like they are
Come on baby, don't fear the reaper
Baby take my hand, don't fear the reaper
We'll be able to fly, don't fear the reaper
Baby I'm your man
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
Love of two is one
Here but now they're gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn't go on
Then the door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew then disappeared
The curtains flew then he appeared, saying don't be afraid
Come on baby, and she had no fear
And she ran to him, then they started to fly
They looked backward and said goodbye, she had become like they are
She had taken his hand, she had become like they are
Come on baby, don't fear the reaper

It's meaning changes now I am in my 70s... far more intimate. Lost my husband to cancer 4 yrs ago... I saw him leave. It hurt so much. Before he died he asked me to swear I wouldn't follow him until all the days of my life were over...he didn't want me to die of grief, so I live, bearing the grief. Just be there, at my death bed. Take my hand, sweetie, when my time is over, and we will fly to eternity, together.
Hey sweetie you will fly with your beloved as I will with mine god bless you he is always yours and will wait for you god bless xxx
Oh my sweet!
I hear you…
Saw them in a packed concert and a little club. High to low. Thanks MGM.
I lost my wife she still lives but doesn’t love me anymore
I’ll never get to hold her hand again and when the inevitable comes ill have no ones hand to hold before I sleep forever
Your video brought tears to my eyes in the gym of all places
One of the all time great songs. I grew up in NYC and Blue Oyster Cult was a bunch of local guys who made appearances under an assumed name (Soft White Underbelly) at local clubs back in the late 70s-80's. I've met them several times over the years.
When Sandy Pearlman moved to Marin County, Soft White Underbelly popped up occasionally in local clubs. Sorry to have missed them, as I never saw the band live.
This song from Blue Oyster Cult has been added to my "Halloween melodies" playlist that I made on Spotify. 👏🏼👏🏼
when i was a kid best remember this in Halloween!
More cowbell 😉(“Oh lord, someone had to bring that up, didn’t they?”)
Once again, pure genius! Big fan of "UFO - Love to Love" by MetalGuruMessiah. I beat the reaper, in stopped smoking 14 years ago, Halloween at 12 midnight. I did it for my Labrador Horizon, for a selfish act to die and her wondering where i am on this CRAZY PLANET. To reach this far, watching this video with my 2 year old son....is excellent!! Don't fear the reaper.... We'll all meet again Orion, Horizon and Rachel Alexis. Rock on.... Daddy loves you!!
I personally believe we've all met "the reaper" many times....he's an old acquaintance....the other side has really been right here with us all along....it's we all recognize home every time we go back to it. Stay safe....love is indeed the answer!
Wow I came here from Love to Love also! Definitely my favorite version of the song since it has the whole intro in it.
I saw Blue Oyster Cult supporting AC/DC at Donningtonbin 1981 but its so long ago i dont remember much about them, what I do remember is losing my mates and sleeping in a farm and hitching it to Derby the day after and getting a coach back to Manchester. Lol☮️☮️☮️🎸👍🏴🏴👍🇳🇴🇨🇦🇧🇪🇦🇺😁
Great...even freakier.
The old Boone St. Barn in Spokane WA, November 28, 1976. I was 17. Started off the encore with DFTR accompanied by a laser light show. One of my all time favorite concerts. Definitely one of my all time favorite songs. It aged well!
Bad ass video.
PS - Olivia Hussey was drop dead gorg in her day.
This is one of my funeral songs. Love it.
1974, I was 12 or 13 years old. This was the best music!
I was two, and yes! It was! Still is!
A masterpiece!
Appreciate the comment and visit!
Very nice work for one of my favourite songs! The dancing skeletons fading into the people dancing. I've seen BOC several times live, and this would be great as a back projection for the song.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Just fantastic👏
Thank you! Cheers!

Thanks Kent! Happy you enjoyed it.
This impressively creative video is totally off the charts. 🏜️
Wonderful classic, cool and historical guitar-riff. This song was always my cheap therapy against fear of death. Good job with the clip, love it, a lot!
Romeo and Juliet is a great play to read, I read it 2x. I strongly suggest reading it.
MGM--- 11 out of 10, as always. Great sound too, ty
Thanks for always hanging out with me, brother!
This is genius. Excellent. Superb. And a ton of other superlatives.
Wow, thank you! Happy you enjoyed it so much!
Damn I love this song......my mother introduced me to the BOC way back in the 80s when I was a kid.....and they still stop me in my tracks to this day.....she's been gone 26 years now.....but I still get to be with her through our music.
Oh yeh man.... That was a f'n fantastic job on the video.... Excellent work man...... Thanks for sharing it.
Your mom had great taste in music. Music is cool that it can put you back in in other times, in other places, with other people. Thanks for checking out the vid and for the nice comment!
@@MetalGuruMessiah you're very welcome....appreciate you.
Wow, incredible video! Just beautiful. Love the Romeo and Juliet images.
Thank you so much 😀
Wonderful. My funeral anthem.
It doesn't matter if we turn to dust. Turn and turn and turn we must.

Just fantastic thank you for posting : very best regards from York UK.
Thanks and regards back! I hope to be visiting UK once you know what fades.....still trying to learn the geography of your country, to associate names with regions, places, etc. It's very confusing, I must say. ;-)
Excellent work..
Thank you.
Cool piece and video edition, brother MGM! Happy Halloween (^__^)
Thanks! You too, my brother from across the world !
Sounds even more exciting hearing this again l ❤it so remarkable to hear
Nice work! Thx

Many thanks!!
You never disappoint,MetalGuruMessiah.Great clip!
Thanks for the encouragement, my friend! Glad you enjoyed it!
Vc está de parabéns produzindo qualidade beleza brother.
Thanks, I needed THAT. Buck and Mr Yakus.
I knew that you had produced this one a long time ago, and I loved that one for what you did with it. With this one, you've truly knocked the ball out of the stadium, Jon! This must have taken a lot of time, thought, and effort to produce. Incredible. What else can I say? Thumbs up, bro! Take care and stay safe. ~ Dan 🤘🏽
You do mind blowing work, MGM! You must work in Hollywood, no? Seriously, your videos have got to be the best visual representations of so many songs you posted! Please, keep them coming! Can you do some Peter Murphy, The Church, Camouflage, Hubert Kah, etc.? When you get the chance, of course!
You're very kind, my friend! I'm not professional nor have I ever made One.Single.Penny from these videos. Started as a hobby when I got tired of looking at static album art "videos" back in the day and just wanted to see how I could make something visually for some of my favs. I LOVE The Church and Peter Murphy and if I'd kept up my pace, I would surely have finished some by now (I'd of course started couple/few things for "Under the Milky Way", just never could decide what direction to take....it's definitely one I'd like to finish if I get the time again). Happy you've connected with some of my videos and thanks for watching and the support and encouragement!!!
Nice work! Thanks..Franco Zefferelli and everything...
Thank you too!

Why did I just find you? Your Merlin's Time video is incredible, and I see you have a wealth of others for me to explore. LOVE BOC and this song is one of my iPhone ringtones I discovered BOC with the first album in 1972. Burnin' for You is one of my favorites, too. Admittedly, it doesn't have the gravitas of this song, but they were sure an interesting, quirky band then, and now. Happy to be a new subscriber. Don't apologize for your older vids. From what I've seen so far, they are amazing.
I don't know what took you so long Vic (I'm kinda tucked away I think! LOL!), but I'm just glad you made it over and happy to have another fan of the music that we love so much visit the channel! We definitely share a love for Al Stewart and BOC!....I've made several videos for both of these artists as they are among my favorites. Thanks for the kind words of support....'specially for the oldies! ;-) Best to ya always, from Texas to wherever you are.
Another great video! Thanks man!
Thank you Gary for watching and commenting!

@@karentroyer9688 I always hoped more people would find it, because I do think it would be popular with alot of people, but I never cared to work much on getting vids ranked (and the few times I did try, it seemed pointless). Awesome, thank you!

Loved it... you re as old as I am 😂
LOL! I was with my mom a few months back at her assisted living and was HORRIFIED when a lady asked if I was her husband! It hit me then....dammit, I got old...even though I was certain that I was never going to! LOL!
@MGM, another awesome track and video! Kudos mate!
I wonder who would've given the 4 'Dislikes' to such a great effort! Bots?
One of my all time favourite compositions. Thank you for making brilliant video row for it, Jon. Bravo.
P.S. Have you watched or read "Ghost in the Shell"? We were talking about it 5 years ago.
Thanks friend. You know, I remember the conversation vaguely....but ashamed to say I've not gotten to it yet. I'm going to find it tonight and at least get it in line so I won't forget again. Stay safe.
How beautiful with the Romeo and Juliet scenes. There are many Romeo's and Juliet's forever in eternity. Don't fear the Reaper.
I am much afraid that most of the people never understood what Shakespeare wanted to tell us:
Romeo and Juliet were nearly still children, this was not "love", but childish obsession.
His play was a warning about the stupidity of human nature, here the deadly feud of these two families, which lead to the death of these two youngsters, which otherwise would soon have recognized their folly and gotten bored with each other.
I wonder (yes I'm dark like that....) how many people have done the self forever sleep while listening to this song? I'd probably say....lots.
Never thought about it, but yeah....you're probably on to something. I guess if you gotta go, this wouldn't be a bad tune to have in your ears when you left the stage?
Top song and a hit in the UK in '78. Nice work MGM. Any chance you could do a video for one of The Struts songs please? Maybe one from the new album, Strange days :)
I really love 'em...know the first two records really well, have the new one, but haven't listened to it properly yet...."shame, shame, shame" there I took care of that for us! ;-) Lemme give it some time in my ears. I'd love to do something for one of their earlier tunes as well, but I don't really mess with the newer releases too much for various reasons. Great suggestion though....and I've taken it. Be safe!
@@MetalGuruMessiah Thank you MGM. Strut on 🎸❤️
I got a Fever, and the only cure is more COW BELL!!!! Love B.O.C.
That is the funniest skit on Saturday Night Live. I crack up every time I watch it 🤣
Great video. My only critique is the fact it has nothing to do with suicide. Don Roeser dispels that myth in many interviews…
Thanks! Before the instant I read your comment, I had actually never considered the song to be even remotely about suicide and I certainly never intended the video to be about suicide.....I just used the clips because it was Romeo and Juliet (as referenced) and, I guess, because somebody died? I appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching and taking time to comment!
@@MetalGuruMessiah it was a big controversy when the song was released that it was encouraging suicide. My instincts told me better. You did a wonderful job on the video. As an artist and a musician as well as a lifelong fan of BOC, I appreciate it on many levels. There were few videos made back then and certainly not one for this song. You have great imagery and scene changes to make an interesting video to a great song. Being a graphic artist, I would have chosen a different narrative to show the female passing.
@@scottratell3705 Thanks Scott! I guess I can see how it might be interpreted that way, but yeah....after listening to and loving the tune for the last almost 50 years🤯!, I don't think the lyrics ever took me down that road even once. Listening to it always brings a sense of love and peace, to me at least. It's a very positive song in the end, and I have no doubt that is exactly as Buck Dharma intended. You know this already though! 😁
Thanks for the nice words about the effort...I try and make things I'd like to see, and had never found anything quite right for it, so I endeavored a swing at it. I'm just a guy on his pc and since I can't generate any revenue my resources are very limited....new ai technology is giving me the means to finally approach so many great songs that I always wanted to vid, but could never find a way, but again, the tools aren't cheap and I have no revenue being generated to help generate content. I'd like to keep doing this as long as I can afford to, but it's getting harder. I started this as a hobby with no intention or expectation to make any $$$ and I still don't want to make any money....I just need a way to fund the hobby?
The result I managed for DFTR placed it in the top tier of the things I've done that have been most pleased with, but as per usual, as soon as it was uploaded I started thinking of the things that were wrong with it and the different choices I would make now. Since I frequently update my videos (some multiple times!)....and being a more recent one (I've saved everything and have it handy) I could easily jump on it. It's tempting to me on one level, of course I have so many other vids that I need to either update or take down, but who knows....point being, if I get around to it, I'd appreciate any thoughts on what visual/narrative concepts might get the message of this great song across better....man, you got me thinking about this more now!
I ramble, pay no mind! LOL! (and I know your comment is not asking for an update!)
I sincerely appreciate hearing from you!...and again thanks for the encouragement, it means alot coming from an artist/musician/and another lifelong BOC fan! ROCK (and ART and BOC) ON!
Death is our only real friend, he delivers us from all pain, terror and suffering in this valley of tears.
Fun fact:
in German death is "male", in italian, spanish, french and russian death is female - what about english, has it a gender in that language ?
So yung grim reaper po ang naghahawak ng kalawit na di po tayo dapat mag bahala dahil palagi po siya nagbabantay sa dilim at sino po ang di niya papababayaan na masaktan?
THIS WAS 1976 NOT 75
Wow...even though i mentioned the correct date in the description (several times) i sure enough did plug in the wrong date on the caption (and in the video title, now corrected). I'm pretty anal about getting the captions all correct on the videos and i hate to mess up. Especially painful for such a popular tune. thanks for the heads up...you're the first person to catch the error in over 6600 views!
Must be a popular one for undertakers 😂

That was awesome until you had to put that 666 in at the end but i am glad you did as it reminds me of how evil can tempt us into sin from time to time. Our Lord knew we would go astray in life but gave us the freewill to chose so that one day we would discover that we are surrounded by evil then return to sanity and know Jesus Christ is our only savior. Thanks again.
Hmmmm....don't remember any 666 and sure not my intention with the video. I'll check it later this evening.
