Bhutan refugees renew farming in U.S.

  • At the age of six, Bishnu Kamar fled her native Bhutan where, she says, the government was trying to kill its own people. She lived the next twenty-two years in a bamboo house in a refugee camp in Nepal, to where many ethnic Nepalis fled, under harsh, cramped conditions. She and her companions, Dropada Kafley and Mon Maya Bastola, now live with their families in South Philadelphia. With the help of an American friend they started a community farm and now tend nearly 100 beds. In Nepal, they had farmed rice, corn and "all kinds of vegetables."
On Thursdays the threesome takes the bus up to the Weavers Way Henry-Got-Crops Farm in Roxborough to better learn American farming techniques.
In addition to farming, Kamar takes care of her mother-in-law, works in a pre-school and, after an intensive 6-month study of English, also works as a Nepali language interpreter in a hospital.
HOW IS IT GOING FOR YOU NOW IN SOUTH PHILADELPHIA?
"It's awesome. Because we spend our life -is a very good way. We are good now. And I think my future can be good. I can try hard..."

These individual Nepali born in Bhutan will be an asset to the USA. They farm, work hard and from the initial responses depicted on video, are grateful to be in the USA.
For those who know little of their heritage please read about the Gurkhas, a formidable fighting force employed by Britain, India, and Singapore. Many a time they stood up to attacks by tyrants who wanted to overpower Democracies.
Imagine if the USA has a Gurkha Regiment.
There is also articles on the on the Nepali brought in to WORK in the development of Bhutan in its early days when BHUTAN was introducing itself to the modern world.
By and large, they are willing to work and don't demand handouts or try to impose their lifestyle or religion on the host populace. Lhotshampa (Southerners - Nepali people who settled in the southern UNINHABITED region of bhutan) first came when the Bhutanese Bearded Worrior-Monk, Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal brought in Nepali craftsmen from the Kathmandu valley in Nepal. He wanted them to make a silver stupa to contain the ashes of his father Tempa Nima. Very soon this UNINHABITED region became the country's main supplier of food.
I wish them well in their new homeland.

Thank you US govenment for taking them in and giving them a second chance for a better life that everybody deserved. They will owe it to you forever. I just hope that most people get educated about refugee and don't get yelled at in the street to go back to their country. They are already frustrated and in depression that some killed themselves because they don't feel being accepted in the society and they don't speak the language. They are hardworking people and ready to learn.

When I see these bhutanese refugees of nepalese origin, I recall year 1990 an incident when they were first become victim of ethnic cleansing by the Brutal Bhutanese government , I was at the nepal india boarder then returning from india tour. I met there at the boarder 3 toddlers who freshly lost their parents due to the brutality of Bhutnese government, those little ones had no one to lookafter them, were sobbing and were in Nepal which was unknown land for them was arrived with the group of bhutanese refugee in a lorry, I don't know where they are now , but there were couple of nepales guys who were fund raising for those kids.I donated too for them. Remembering that incident I still deeply hate Bhutanese government.

Bhutanese refugees are Lhotshampas ("southerners"), a group of people of Nepali origin, including some Kirat, Tamang, and Gurung peoples. These refugees registered in refugee camps in eastern Nepal during the 1990s as Bhutanese citizens deported from Bhutan. As Nepal and Bhutan have yet to implement any agreement on repatriation, many Bhutanese refugees have since resettled to North America, Oceania, and Europe under the auspices of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
