  • In 1992, Mark O’Connor created a history-making album of duets with his violin and fiddle inspirations, entitled “Heroes”. For both historical documentation and further study, there was a video camera in the recording studio during these important recordings and now fans of the violin can see up close and in real time, what took place in the recording studio between O’Connor, Shankar and the East Indian percussionists. Included on this film is the actual recorded violin solos of both O’Connor and Shankar as well as the trade section between the musicians.
After the album track has concluded, some bonus footage never heard or seen before this film of additional O’Connor solo takes, as well as an additional trade section, both discarded for the final recording, but could easily have been included as both of these masters improvised back and forth to each other for most of the day. There is some footage of O’Connor warming up while the mics are being set up, demonstrating the intense focus and preparation for the new musical language the musicians would embark on in the studio. Famed record producer and engineer George Massenburg appears in the film and helps the album’s producer O’Connor, create one of the most magical meetings of two violinists ever documented. “Heroes” released in 1994 on Warner Bros. Records, was nominated for 2 Grammys and sold 200,000 CDs in its first pressing. Since then, the album has become a classic and an inspiration for violin and fiddle fans for two generations and counting.
