  • L. Shankar: Who’s To Know 1980
    1. Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi (22’06)
    (Raga Hemavathi)
    2. Ananda Nadamadum Tillai Sankara (23’45)
(Ragam savithri, tala adi (8 beats)
    Shankar: 10-string double violin, tamboura
    Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman: mridangam
    Zakir Hussain: tabla
    V. Lakshminarayana conductor (tala keeping)
    Recorded November 1980, published 1981
    Engineer: Martin Wieland
Prod. by Shankar & Manfred Eicher, ECM 1195 LP
The 10-string double violin, which is heard for the first time on this album, is a double-bodied instrument conceived and designed by Shankar and built by Ken Parker of Stuyvesant Sound. The necks can be played individually or collectively; when played individually, the strings of the other neck create sympathetic effects, overtones. Among its many possibilities, the double violin can cover range of the whole string orchestra (although only the range of the violin and viola is use on this album)
This album is dedicated to John Mclaughlin!

This album was a part of daily meditation,i would listen while watching the golden sun reflecting on lake Ponchatrain in Nola.Years later walking through union station in L.A.,i heard a very familiar sound coming through a section of the stations courtyard and to my surprise,it was L.Shankar playing his double violin with a band,AWESOME,one of my musical heroes, got the chance to chat with him and the band...om shanti Shankar

I got on board with this in around 1983 ... and the opening phrases still give me the same chills today as then. This is one of my ten desert island Lps. Thank you for posting it - so that many more searchers may find themselves in this ecstasy.

David, thank you for loading this masterpiece. Incredible artistry by L Shankar and accompanying artists. truly mesmerizing. I too had bought the album (after hearing it on Columbia Univ Sat 3 hour Indian music FM broadcast) from Sam Goody's at Woodbridge Mall, perhaps as a special order. Sorry too far back to recall details. Sadly I do not have the LP or the record player any more (Ah! the perils of downsizing).

First of all I have to say Thank for You, David to share this masterpiece!
I humbly join to the company of those, who has unforgettable memories about it.
If I can have any parallel with anything in its spirit, extraordinary style, it is Raimon Panikkar's "The Vedic Experience".

I'm one of the curious...who wonders how some portions of this could be played with two hands unless he were plucking both notes at the same time. Some mastery!

He plays double track sometimes. Records a session, and then might add other layers. It is called over-dubbing. He has done this in many albums. He often adds a bit of vocals too. In this CD, there is double tracking in the Tanam part.
