      I agree they are often used incorrectly and unintentionally. I also feel they are hard to pull off well. Personally I also don’t like them except for specific circumstances. Design should feel effortless yet intentional and not just do things because one can
      I love your point that an accent wall is a bit of a misnomer. It’s really more of a focal point created through paint

    • @1paradox
      @1paradox 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Could be timeless depending on the type of enhancement like the paint color or architectural detail that's been added. Board and batton, grass cloth wallpaper, plaster or shiplap may be more timless than say the geometric patterned molding. Also bright red paint used to be considered a super trendy focal/accent wall color, but may now be comsidered dated. I think it just really depends.

    Over a decade ago, I saw a feature “accent” wall and liked the idea so I painted one wall of my bedroom a few shades darker than the other walls. It’s a warm brown SW Nomadic Desert and the other walls are SW Kilim beige. I still love it today and it’s been easy to make some decor changes to freshen the look. The featured wall is center view when entering the room the bed against it and only has a window to one side. The room is small and square and this color combination and decor makes it so cozy. I also got brave and painted an ombré feature wall in
    another room which I am debating on changing but find it hard to let go for now. I felt like such an artist painting it lol and I love the colors and it is something unique and special for me.

    I might have made some of the biggest mistakes you talked about. I did an accent wall and liked it so much that I accented the borders of another wall to tie the rooms together. it was a walk-through to the rest of the house but with the accent, it looks like it's one big room. I really like it.

    Thank you so much for this video, Julie! I'm typically late to trends, so I discovered the board-and-batten x different-colored "accent wall" phenomenon a few weeks ago. While I was excited at the idea at first, I realized it's not only easy to mess up, but it can be cumbersome if, like me, you like to switch up your decor often. People say you can just paint it over, but that costs money and time and isn't feasible for everyone. I also watched a different video by an interior designer who said you have to at least try to match your wall with major items in the room, e.g., your comforter-otherwise it can look random rather than intentional.
    Also thank you for criticizing the name! I hadn't thought about it before, but I did always wonder who decided the word "accent" made the most sense. I'll refer to it as a focal wall from now on. Thank you for everything you share with us. God bless you and your family!

      Maybe do the focal wall where you want it and define the space with a large plant wall hanging lights or dramatic floor standing lights or folding wall separators etc. then you can have the focal wall define that space or even more dramatic tie it all together with one big focal wall going through all three rooms. And use the other walls to complement it. Don’t forget the ceiling. Check out 1950’s modern design layouts frank lloyd wright etc to see what they did. Watch movies set designs too. North by northwest just about any Doris day movies. Read design mags from 1950’s. But update the look! Good Luck🍀 !

    The older I get the more I think " less is more". Less colors in a room leaves more creativity to decorate for each season, and Ive cut way down on those decorations too. For me accent walls can't be too vivid and only needed in a rare style of room.
    Its funny as we have children how our style preferences become more safety conscious. ( I hate escutcheons! They get jabbed under my fingernails & ouch!

    Don't be intimidated or limit yourself by one's thoughts on design. It is okay to create a space that is visually stimulating to your specific taste.

I have always had my house with different colors in most of the rooms; Now I am painting my entire house with SW Alabaster but I have a question and that is that I have a dining room wall with sconces and a gold mirror and I am not sure if the alabaster coordinates well with the accessories. I would like to have your opinion so as not to fail. Now, this wall has the color of BM “Caliente” but I would like to change it. Julie, I wish you could help me. Thank you🌷

    Hey there, great youtube channel! I would love to bring up a request for a new video that you can consider. I was searching in your channel but did not find one: That is how do you organise an interior design project? You have a great video on the steps you take but how do you mange all of it and get out of overwhelm. This can be a lot to plan say if you just purchases a new home (like me) that is still in construction mode and allows you to be very flexible. Flexibility is great but it can come with overwhelm of ohh my where to start and how to manage all the pieces, what timeline to give exedra especially if you want to do most or all of it yourself. best regards Julia

    Hi Julie
    I do have an accent wall in the master bedroom. It’s really a focal wall meant to be seen from the opposite side en-suite. It looks very nice. Navy wallpaper with copper tones branch motif. It’s from perigold. I did it to complete a navy white motif already in the room. I took down the hanging photos of my children and placed those on the nightstands. I agree that the focal wall should stand out and doors and windows and even artwork can interfere with that impact. But Thank you😊 for the advice on ceiling work to compliment it. I will be thinking about that now not sure what to do yet. I agree it would complete the look! I would be interested in a show about dining rooms and storage of the things we use in there. Hosting time is around the corner and this would be a great time to hear about designers thoughts on how to decorate and design them for gatherings and what accessories you think are most valuable to have in our dining rooms. Have a great week! Margaret

    Well I have made some of the mistakes. I was wondering why HGTV was calling it an accent wall? I do like a feature wall(correct term), but sometimes it is hard to find a wall that works as you described. Many people live in tiny homes. I did do a feature wall in my dining room--but alas it has a slider to a deck and a couple windows, but I carefully planned it out and had my accent pieces(see how I used that 😂)first, rug, art, table accents, furniture. So it blends well together. It is a nice shade of red because It is kind of dark. I debated about painting it something else, but I am hearing it is coming back! 🤣🤣🤣 I have cherry wood furniture and some walnut, red/green/gold/cream, rug, original art with bold colors and cherry wood frames, some eclectic African art, b, some handmade pottery, etc. Books on an old vintage buffet. The art is portraits, landscape with Fall colors, impressionist paintings. Nice family portraits with gold leaf frames(classic old world frames) A cool classic table runner and a nice ceramic/stone/hand painted centerpiece. I like to put chunky candle holders on it with some nice fat candles. I like it, but it is a bit bold. It has a more classic old library feel(it has my upright studio piano in a cherry wood stain). Will see if the red stays. I would have to get a new rug, art, etc. First. Which would cost some money so I may just live with it for a while. I have debated about painting it the same as the frontroom which is a warm cream(used to be a dark taupe with red undertones), but would have to get new furnishings(accents). I love the tips, but not sure if I would give up a feature wall if it had a window or two. I think it depends on the room. 😊

      @@JulieKhuu It is personalized. Above my piano is a photo of me and hubby with a nice chunky gold leaf frame. Other pictures on my piano. Some strange hanging art(given to us a good luck large amulet in green jade and wine red macreme) A didgeridoo sitting upright in a corner. Some floor giraffes (mom and baby). Art on the walls, an old 1940's upright radio(really cool from hubby's grandma). So I have a real eclectic mix. Odd, but personalized. None of my paintings hanging yet. I do have one I finished of hubby and our son(when he was little). I think I will see if it will work in the living room. It is like 42 x 36 I think. I need to put it in its frame. Acrylic on canvas.). Personalized is the way to go for a cozy home. My opinion anyway. 😊

    I've recently discovered ur channel and am in love! Ur style speaks to my soul! My husband and i are in the process of building a 5k sqft home right now, and the main floor is an open floor plan with a huuuuuge kitchen, two-story-high-ceiling living room 19x18ft, and an expansive dining room. The living room has an electric fireplace with the "chimney" going up the entire 17ft up, and im thinking to accent that chimney with a charcoal gray (the rest of the walls will be a nice cozy light gray).. Im going to have 10ft long matte black chandeliers in the foyer and living room (all hardware is matte black too) so now after watching this video I'm thinking, would that make it 2 focal points if the chandelier is black and the fireplace is dark gray, and might they clash? Or is it ok to have a light gray base throughout the house, and have like the black stainless steel appliances, gray drapes, black knobs, black lighting fixtures to tie in with the fireplace feature wall..? Any tips?
    OH, and: the dining room has 2 walls, one is all windows, and the second is 13 feet of empty space. Should I paint it the same charcoal gray as I want to paint the fireplace feature-wall in the living room? They would be diagonal from each other, 25 feet apart

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want the fireplace to be a feature, let it stand alone and don’t coordinate any other walls to that finish. If you want a more coordinated space and let it be all about the lighting, I would swap the black fixtures out for brass or nickel. Something to contrast with the grey Elaine! Hope that helps, thank you for watching 🙏☺️

The rest of the walls and ceiling has pine tongue and groove (except the separated open living room has new drywall that I need a paint color for too). After your video I'm thinking that I shouldn't make it an accent wall because there is a window in the middle of the wall and you mentioned that it's best to have a solid wall if doing an accent wall. Do you recommend an off-white paint color instead (no color)? The window has white casings already.

    I have been wanting a (soft) feature wall in my bedroom. There is no other real focal point in my bedroom. I would like the paint-only wall behind my bedroom to be more interesting. No windows, no cut outs, doors, niches etc. I had been considering a LARGE SCALE peel and release wallpaper, or one with a subtle TEXTURE but it is SO EXPENSIVE and my wall is large! I have decided against anything wood because I have white board and batten in my hallway, living and dining room. More wood trimmed walls in my bedroom seems like "over kill" to me. My walls are a soft golden yellow with white trim, a golden solid textured rug, and a rich medium-brown wood flooring throughout (I live in Michigan and too much white in our condo with white snow and gray skies all around us for 7 months of the years...is just too much white and just too depressing for me.) I have a chalk painted vintage dresser with a beautiful natural wood tone mirror in this bedroom, black and white ticking bedspread/pillow shams over my black metal framed bed and black linen black- out curtains and horizontal, sheer blinds over our large (almost full wall size) horizontal window.This window overlooks a sunken garden with lots of green plants but also overlooks the walkway into our 6-unit condo building so having privacy at night is important at times. Green is an accent color found in the vintage dresser (the dresser is painted mostly black with accents of green and some natural wood.) I have a large wooden carved statement piece on my wall above the bed frame painted in a soft green. If I was to do the wall behind the bed, I would move the half round carved wood piece to another spot. Still looking for ideas....

      @JulieKhuu  2 ปีที่แล้ว
