Manly P. Hall: Exploring the World Within Ourselves

  • Full title: "The Inside of the Cup: Exploring the Underworld Within Ourselves", March 30, 1980
Just as Manly Hall was able to speak eloquently and at length about ancient esoteric wisdom traditions, he clearly understood the difficulties of mankind and effortlessly described -- in plain terms -- what it is that each of us, as individuals, can do in our own Inner Life to improve our condition in the world and in ourselves.
Soul growth and the maturity of the human being were among the major themes of Mr. Hall's career. His stated mission, in part, was to gather the wisdom of the ages, and re-present it a way that a general audience of today could not only grasp, but directly apply toward their own lives.

I am looking for like minded people. I'm living like a hermit because of some past trauma. The only time I feel any better is listening to Manly P Hall. This man saves my life daily. Thank you so much for putting these lectures available to us.

I live like a hermit too but haven't been able to identify the cause.
Not to imply that there is a problem.
But your point made me ponder.
Would you mind elaborating on the past trauma you are referring to?
It may be one of mine too...

I'd like to share something that really woke me up to how selfish I had been. Some others may find it of value also.
I have spent the better part of 8 years living in a forest.
I have a small adopted family, some sheep and turkeys... a very humble existence. Some would say in near poverty, And in extreme isolation...
And you know what I had been busy thinking about most of these 8 years?
How can I be a better man?
    Who am I?
    What is my purpose?
How may I best serve my family?
How can I right some wrongs I've made in the past?
This had been *self*interest at its finest and most subtle.
Although turning my back on material things for a time had been a blessing and humbling gave a certain strength to my character I spent the better part of my minds attention on myself and the cost of this had been passing judgment on the outside world for what seemed like it's degeneration.
The outside world seemed near over run with hypocrisy and impending doom...until I realize, I had been self seeking these past years.
I know who is the hypocrite and the doom sayer... 8 years of staring at him in the mirror and not recognizing it! 😂
Well, I have traveled a long winding path of my own making, so perhaps, at the least some other will not have to.
If one can Quite these thoughts your whole world can begin to heal.
Like the bible says, clean the inside of the cup and the outside will become clean also. It really works this way! 😀

When I was in my teens, I came to see what religion was, and completely rejected it. Unfortunately, I threw the baby out with the bath water. I also did not pay any attention to my spiritualty, and regarded myself as rational follower of science and technology. It was not until I was 73 years old that I came to realise my mistake. I am now 76 and am trying the know what, I am, having realised why I am here. It is never too late.

The ego wants to be right so bad that it would rather die than admit to being wrong. Sadly, many do die from precisely this wish. But there's something about aiming this stubborn desire to be right at whichever areas of your life wherein you might actually be quite wrong--either morally in our actions or factually in our ideas--that produces a deep change in your personality. You have to be willing to "be right" about being wrong. In that moment--which the ancients called "confession"--the moral alchemy of a changed perspective, a changed character, takes hold, and you suddenly realize that you no longer need the influence of chemistry on your perceptions to bring about its temporary change in the direction of improvement. In that moment, the deepest urge of a living being--the urge to grow, to develop into its highest self, to overcome its present being, to improve inwardly--materializes, and you realize that the lasting change in the direction of improvement, the experience of progress, which you've been seeking all along by changing your chemistry, can more naturally, more permanently be obtained by a simple change in conduct: all you need is willingness to direct your desire to be right at any areas of your life where either you know in your heart you are or were wrong, or where other people might insist that you are. Try that for a REAL change. And now you know both the meaning and the practical use of....
"And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect is weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the Power of Christ may rest upon me."
    2 Corinthians 12:9
