For a little context, the Dreamcast having VGA output is a hold over of it being a stripped down Naomi arcade board. It was somewhat common for arcade boards to use VGA to get progressive screen output. And oh boy did it look GOOD!

I sold my dreamcast years ago and I’m currently on a trip back down that memory lane to get another. This just juiced me up even more. I didn’t know there was a sega VGA box either. I had a pound hdmi before I sold mine but I bet this looks so clean.

Pound cables SUCK on dreamcast, though they make good cables for OG Xbox. But VGA is where it is always at when it comes to damn near HD quality. 580P looks SO good on VGA on the DC.

Cool that VGA was popular around the Dreamcast era, I use a VGA to HDMI for flatscreen play.
Btw, I think you can output PS2 in VGA with a console softmod, heard that it also looks great with certain games and you will need a compatible lead also.

Yeah Dreamcast has one of the cleanest video outputs of any retro console imo. I've never owned the official VGA box but Behar Bros has been selling high quality boxes for years, but they cost a fair bit more than the Amazon cables.

  • @GinoBrand5

I did the VGA with Dreamcast all through the 2000s, some ebay VGA, but yeah it was great on my tv that had vga. Today though im rockin a more modern display.. and they have removed component and vga and svid(that hurts the most). So yeah displays now have all HDMIs so I got a Kaico HDMI adaptor which presumably takes that vga signal and converts. Looks great. VGA is just so clean that the conversion doesn’t seem to degrade it.

I remember randomly thinking, "Wonder if Funcoland has a VGA box..." and walking in to find an Interact/Performance brand VGA box hiding behind the front counter of their store. Snagged it, brought it home, and MAN, the jump from RF to VGA was just mind-blowing. I later tried to sell my friends on the upgrade and got one of them to try it. He was playing an import copy of Biohazard: Code Veronica, and when he hooked it up to his Mother's PC, he TOO dropped his jaw at what he was seeing. And lastly, I brought it to my college campus to have something to do while I was waiting for finals to be over. I hooked it up to one of the monitors, and after a while, I drew a crowd in an empty section of our Computer lab where many more people were experiencing VGA for the first time. And actually selling them on a Dreamcast only 3 years after Sega withdrew. Seeing your reaction just brought back all those memories. Happy to see it's still blowing minds years later! 😎

I'm really digging my fpb for Ps1, Snes, Nes, and Genesis. I was surprised how well the Snes looked via s-video compared to my crt via component cables. Played around with the retrotink-2x pro via hdmi to dvi-d for interlaced consoles, and it looked okay. Ps2 looked pretty decent. At the end of the day, I think emulation for 480i content through the Series X is king with a modern tv display. Dreamcast at 4k 60 4:3 via flycast is ridiculous.

Its the only way I play Dreamcast is with a VGA cable. I use a 720p upscaler (since anything higher is kinda pointless) and worked great on a 50" 4K UHDTV.
There only a small few games that vga doesn't work while some games that isn't supposed to work still can be tricked to work simply by starting the game normally then hotswapping the vga cable as it only detects at boot. Some games though will still refuse to work with VGA but that's a very small amount of the entire library.

I ended up buying the same OEM Dreamcast VGA cable on eBay ($100+ via Japan) and connecting to the same monitor. Didn’t realize 4:3 & fill settings would look so stretched and pixelated though, honestly thought it would look closer to the quality of 1:1 but for the full screen size, as that’s how I remember the pic quality looking all those years back playing on a CRT.
Am I doing something wrong here or did I just have the wrong expectations? 1:1 looks amazing but obviously the picture is just too small. In this video the picture quality looks almost like 1:1 quality even though the screen is full/filled. Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me at this point

Are there any comparison videos between official Sega DC VGA cables vs. aftermarket?

Do you tend to use 4:3 or fill setting on the monitor? Which for VGA and which for using s-video? I have the same setup and can’t figure out which would be most appropriate

I’m in the same boat. Ended up buying the same OEM Dreamcast VGA cable on eBay and connecting to the same monitor. Didn’t realize 4:3 & fill settings would look so stretched and pixelated though, honestly thought it would look like the quality of 1:1 but for the full screen size, as that’s how I remember the pic quality looking all those years back playing on a CRT.
Am I doing something wrong here or did I just have the wrong expectations? 1:1 looks amazing but obviously the picture is just too small. In this video the picture quality looks almost like 1:1 quality even though the screen is full/filled. Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me at this point

Does it rotate vertically the other way? Pretty sure Ikaruga only works rotated the opposite way. If not, you’ll have to mod the rotating mechanism. Done it on other rotating monitors.
