- Walmart mountain bikes are not made for downhill MTB trails. Curiosity got the best of me so picked up a Huffy Carnage at my local Walmart. Will a Walmart Huffy survive a downhill MTB trail?

You did fine. Kudos for doing the best you can. I have trouble sometimes because my jaw is misaligned. Fatigue and anxiety make it much worse. I am reminded of the time when Moses was protesting God choosing him to deliver the Hebrews out of Egyptian slavery in Exodus chapter 4 vss. 10-13,

This gives me confidence that God gets more glory the more we depend on Him to accomplish His tasks.

Very cool video. Reminds me of the year I had to access my mining claim on a bike and I was too cheap to get a decent one (very pricey in the foothills of California). I did it on a $150 K-mart bike and let me say, the horrible sounds that those brakes made going downhill sounded just like yours!
Never really knew if the brakes would bring my speed down to a controllable level and a lot of the time they didn't. Had to redo the brakes after every trip down and trusted them less each time.
And they sounded just like yours, ear piercing and horrible.
Wish I'd ponied up for a little dirt bike instead.

im surprised the frame survived. It would be too expensive to add 2 more bolts to the stem. better this way - handlebars fail before frame to let you know you are riding a piece of junk.

It happens, I bought a 2005 Specialized Euduro expert for $750 shipped on ebay with paypal six months same as cash a couple years ago in like new condition. It's got the 36mm Fox Talas fork with 165mm of travel. It's awesome, it's just not stylish because it's only 26 inch wheels. If you can live with 26 inch wheels, you can get all sorts of bargains if you are willing to troll ebay and Craigslist since 26 inch wheel bikes are out of fashion now.

Martin Well, when I go to the LBS, only the low end stuff is still even available in 26 inch. Everything else is 27.5 or 29. So a lot of people assume 26 inch is dead. And it is fashion wise but that means if you are OK with it you can save a bunch on a used bike. Personally I'm OK with saving a ton of money to end up riding a trail 5 seconds slower or whatever the difference is, I guess it depends on the trail, 26 inch tends to be more nimble and 29 faster. If I was racing, I'd want 29 inch, but I'm not so I don't care, I just ride for recreation.

I used to have a huffy, I used it for a long time. I had so many adventures with it, and a lot of crashes. It got me where I wanted to go. That thing was so damaged and old at the end of its life I eventually had to throw it out. I loved that bike. Rest In Peace, Huffy.

The bar twist reminds me of a video I saw of the origins of mountain biking. They used to modify schwinn paperboy bikes with extra gears and fly down gravel roads and such. In a race called the repack a chick crashed her bike, twisting the handlebars to one side in the process. She got up, kicked the handles until it was sort of straight, and kept racing. All well before helmets and suspensions. What a legend
This bike wasn't designed to handle smooth asphalt as well.
Once I bought a bike from Walmart. They put 2 brake levers on the bike. They had a guy who specialized assembling bikes in the back. What this dude did instead of putting a brake line to the back with one lever and the other lever has a brake line going to the front brake.. This dude decided to get a brake line splitter and wired it so both brakes went to one brake lever. End story? My first time using the bike the brakes failed and I almost ran into oncomming traffic. Turns out you should never buy a bike from Walmart..
not to mention after a few months of use, on WalMart bikes, the chain and gears will wear out so fast that it will eventually slip when you start to peddle and that could also be dangerous. Never had that problem with bikes from a bikeshop.

I have a used Huffy bike with Iffy brakes going downhill is a bit of a deathtrap on it I wear a baseball helmet with a visor to be a bit more safe I already plowed into a car with it and had the handlebar fixed to ride it again

As for the bikes, I think they're great to get into the sport, when you're getting used to the terrains, the obstacles and other stuff that you're most probably afraid of at the beggining. As time goes by, one gets more experienced and start riding on more complex terrain, that's when you wanna check for better bikes.
My buddy and I were like two chairs ahead of you on your way up to film this. We were about to leave when you came down the ramp and we heard the SQUEEAAAAK. My buddy said "Hey that sounds like my brakes." I turned around, saw the bike, and said "Except your brakes weren't made by Huffy" haha. Didn't realize it was you, said "That guy is dead" and we left lol.

+DaBears08 seth is a better technical rider while phil is a superior trail rider in my opinion they would just have to do multiple tests that focus on different parts of the sport

Best bang for the buck for a department store bike would be the Mongoose XR Pro, with a few upgrades there pretty nice bikes for the price.

Dude last summer I rode this park on my hardtail. It was an absolute blast. I recognized it immediately when you got onto the double black jump trail. I managed to blast through that entire double black on my hardtail and it was the most fun thing I've ever done on a bike. Thunder Mountain Bike Park man, on even a decent bike ABSOLUTELY FRIGGIN' AMAZING.

I gotta say that's pretty ballsy. I had a Walmart bike for a brief period, and my rear wheel fell off while pedaling downhill on a smooth street... I'd even tuned and tightened everything. I decided never again after that.

DiamondBack Cooper, 180mm of travel, and for $2k its a good way to get into this kind of riding. Though I'd have the stock neon green color changed, but that's just me :D.

A good hard tail will run you between 700ish to over 2k, depending on the brand. The Cooper though is a good starting point for DH type of riding.

odd this pops up 3 yrs later. DAMN you got some stones bro... I had a huffy as a kid. They spot welded the frame rear chain stays. These came apart while riding.. I was lucky to lose a bit of skin, bumps and bruising. No huffy experiment for me. Glad you made it down in one piece.

I just got into mountain biking and i was on a budget so i got myself a Roadmaster Granite Peak. ran me about 100$ with warranty at Walmart. Ive had none of the problems that Phil had with his Huffy. In fact, on tougher trails and bigger jumps, the only problem I've noticed is that the brakes become misaligned every couple rides. It is a heavy bastard and I can't say its remotely comfortable, but it has withstood ordeals that nearly left myself in need of repairs. I just wanted to throw my opinion out there because I know there arent many decent looking choices out there under 300$ and I would hate for someone to forgo something as fun as MTB because of the price threshold, as intimidating as it does seem.
Craig's list is the best option. after being talked out of a Wal-Mart bike, I found a Giant for 75 bucks.
+Nathan Sher I should've mentioned that. I spent too long on CL looking at bikes and there was always a deal breaker that deterred me, but there were such great deals! especially if you're a woman or kid. definitely hit CL first.
You can still have fun mountain biking on cheap bikes, but it's when you want to push yourself and take things more seriously when you should spend the bigger bucks.
Safety also plays a factor.

+Jack Aldred Yeah you can. you just need to become pretty good at performing repairs and preventive maintenance. I definitely have had several parts come off of a fairly expensive Nishiki when pushing it too hard. cheaper bikes will fail, you just need to know how to fix em.
This video now has some age to it… but it doesn’t get old. Love the production, love the narration. And it’s classy that you totally don’t hate on the Huffy. My son races DH and this makes his $6k bike more palatable. Too bad his bikes last a max of 2 seasons. A few have only made it one.

This was the best Walmart bike comercial ever. I must admit it is a very nice looking bike. the average consumer will never go down a "Double Black Diamond" Trail, for most people that would be considered suicide.

Thank you so much for sharing your wild experience. I have passed this along to new riders that were looking for a bike. I strongly encouraged them to get a bike store bike and not a toy store bike. Great review. I saw it when it first came out and I still cringe watching it.
I bought a Schwinn Al Comp from Walmart. The handlebars rotated on a smooth greenway path. The threads in the stem were stripped by whoever assembled it.
The derailleur was not adjusted so I could only use one front sprocket.
I took that bike back the next day.
I go back a week later, the exact bike is back on the shelf. None of the issues were corrected.

Truth be told I have owned the same bike and out of the lot it only fell short of almost twice as pricey Mongoose black and orange themed thing. Obviously I returned them after a while and bought them for fun anyways. Every single bike sold at Walmart is crap :)

so, if you change the brakes , fork and handlebars, it should work right?
+zeus lim you would have a hard time finding a new fork that is not tapered, since the huffy users an older style fork. After that you'd still want disk brakes to stop a bike so heavy, which would require different wheels since you'd need hubs that have the disk brakes mounts. Essentially you could, but there's a lot of things that really need to be upgraded you'd be better off buying something used.
It's fairly easy to get a fork with a straight steerer tube as long as it is an inch and and eighth but the fork would easily cost more than the bike did originally. There's some forks as cheap as $200 from Suntour but a fork even reasonably capable of doing a trail like this is going to start at the $500 mark new. After that it is like you said, new brakes ($120 ish for disk), new wheel (Another $90 at least, but it's a plus bike so maybe more), a new stem ($30), and a new handlebar at $50. So that's just a cool $760 to make the bike semi safe, but certainly not a high performer.
zeus lim I was thinking the same thing. But then remembered the wheels are likely crap and would be destroyed in a day of riding. By the time you put decent parts on it you may as well have just bought a used bike that's quality and just a few years old.
Just put a Shimano V Brakes and youŕe ready to go again.
And Stem. And new brakes, too. The cheapest alloy brakeset runs at $25 but you might want to "splurge" and get a better linear pull system at $40-ish, then $20 for pads.
Plus you'd probably want a better shock on the rear, which isn't cheap. The wheels will give out, too, and it's possible the reason he fell was the bearings got squashed and seized for a moment, throwing him over the handlebars. You see that wheel doesn't even spin when it gets the weight put on it when landing from the jump; I think those bearings got squished. If the hub/bearings/cups stay in okay shape, there's also keeping the rim straight and spokes tensioned properly. A new wheelset will soon be needed, either through axle failure (freewheel driven with too much strain) or through rim failure, whichever comes first.
For the new wheel, you would want it to be a cassette driven, thanks to that system having a stronger axle, and double-wall rims. If you have a casstte drive, though, I think that will bump you to more speeds minimum, so then you'll need new shifting and cables, and cog too.
You could theoretically go very cheap friction shifting fingertip, but gripshift is safer since you're liable to go over the handlebars. A good set won't run TOO much, but it's adding up towards what you'd spend on a good used MTB or even an entry-level MTB from a much more reputable maker.
And that's still a VERY heavy bike that won't jump very well, with loads of other parts that are prone to violent, sudden, and possibly injurious failure.
A testament to your skill, getting out of those precarious situations.

@@jort93z nope. Steel is quiet popular with enthusiasts. Just that this is probably some low quality steel and the width of the tubing is probably double that of normal aluminium frames.

you are lucky, i got a $100 mountain bike from target as a joke. i was messing around with it doing some higher sped wheelies. when the front wheel came down, the suspension bottomed out, and the rim proceeded to shatter, sending my flying over the handle bars and into the pavement. i ended up dislocating my arm and sliding down the street on the dislocated arm. took about a year for my shoulder to stop hurting. never doing that again

Great video thanks. I bought one just for local rides and saw the same exact problems. Handlebars turn constantly now matter how tight and go through break pads like crazy. I guess you could put a screw through the handlebars and swap out disc breaks to try and stay cheap.

Just got my brake caliper replaced and it cost $20 less than that bike.

Just start riding. Anywhere you can, any bike you can get your hands on.
I just got into mountain biking at 33ish. just get a bike and ride. talk to local shops about what you want from biking and ask about used bikes if you are unsure about getting into the sport. check out my channel and you can see what a 34 year old noob is able to learn in less the. 2 years of riding.
I see plenty of women over your age on the trails. Usually on full suspension Treks.
Hello! I am a 32 year old frumpy woman who started riding about 3 years ago on a hardtail Costco bike lol. But I loved it so much and now I am on a full-suspension Transition Smuggler. I have ridden all kinds of trails including some downhill stuff like Sandy Ridge and Post Canyon in Oregon and Capitol Forest in Washington. I mostly ride XC style locally though, and I love the challenge of rooty, twisty trails. It helps to find friends to ride with. Check facebook for local mountain bike groups and join them on beginner rides. Most clubs are pretty friendly toward new folks. You can do it! Just get a bike and go!

Well, look what happend to it after one run, not even a full day's riding it. Imagine how it would be after 6 months, all the bearings gone, crank arms falling off, head set rattling etc. FDS

The stem is soldered, so you can't change it, and overtightening the handlebars would probably compromise the components involved, given the quality of the materials 💔
Use threadlocker. Loctite 242 or the like, and observe its curing time of about 24hrs.
But what about the ~$350 bikes? 90% wont or cant spend $1000+ for a proper bike. How well do they hold up? Especially since bikes like the Carrera vulcan get excellent reviews for the price and weight nowhere near to 55pounds...
All the big bike companies seem to be making impressive sub-$500 bikes. I have a Cannondale Catalyst I got for $379. I've put about 500 miles on it with 100 of those being *moderate* trails, and the only issue I've really had is rear derailleur related. It's pretty solid and has impressed me but it's probably a lot heavier at 39 lbs than a real professional bike.
When you are in the $350 price range, you are already talking about bikes from a reputable bike shop. A shop that will talk to you about the bikes, knows about them, cares about them, and backs them up. My bike shop has employees that actually ride, it isn't a minimum wage job they have that is better then McDonald's.
If you can't afford the proper tool, find a different hobby or start working harder and saving.
That's a ridiculous statement. You can't define proper. I shoot with $10k worth of photography gear, some of my students have $200 cameras. They don't need to find a different hobby or work harder and save, they need to understand the abilities and limitations of what they do have and how to work within those parameters. This goes for any hobby.
