A few people have asked me about the new Xmas box and how it would fit in with this list. I would go for 3x Combat Patrol, the Xmas Box and the Lord Solar. This gives you 80 Infantry, 4 Command Squads (You can only take 3 cadian, but the 4th one could be used to create other officers), 3 FOBs, 3 Sentinels, 2 Dorns and 1 Lord Solar. That comes to over 1900 points :)
What officers do you think you should build?

Aside from the greenskins and chaos undivided the astra militarum is my favorite imperium army because it feeds my nostalgia for world war history and... TANKS!😊
Just the grim demeanour of the Guard is what it sells it imo, the aestetics are a perfect bind, but it's just this grim demeanour against the horrors of the universe =][=
My favourite part about the Guard is, how they make excellent fertiliser and targets for practice.

This is all well and good, but what is the most inconvenient, expensive and suboptimal army to collect? This is what will really get the guard players interested.
gaurd are unfortunately always going to be expensive and hard to paint because of their numbers. As far as using it as best you can i think this does it pretty well.
oh I got this. Mechanized Vostroyans, plus I'm converting a vostroyan combat patrol. I'm literally working on the crew for the bombast right now. This is 100% highly inconvenient, there aren't vostroyan sculpts for vehicle crew or ordnance batteries, so I'm custom building them. It is also extremely expensive, I needed vostroyan gun teams to convert to crew, plus I bought an ordnance battery for the guns, too many kits for one unit. Finally, mechanized guard is pretty sub optimal, but I can't help but want to run mech-guard.
Well I've got really into collecting agents of the imperium and a lot of these units are really fluffy and not that useful.
@@VirtualRussianif I were you I’d look into 3D printed heads. If you get the big fur hats the Cadian bodies won’t really matter.
@@androlitoVfrom my experience Guard aren’t hard to paint at all. If you use the Zandri Dust spray you pretty much just color in the armor and gear.
16:18 I remember years ago watching StrikingScorpion82 battle reports, and it drove me absolutely nuts that James, the Guard player, never took artillery of any kind. So what would happen is his brother would take a squad of Warp Spiders and two 3-man squads of Windriders, have them sit on three separate objectives out of line of sight, and James could do nothing about it, because the rest of the Eldar army was all over him and he was always playing defensive.
Solid video for beginners, strait forward on what they need to buy and actually a very decent force.

I recently bought a Combat Patrol and Chimera I'm slowly assembling and even slowerly painting. That's about 500pt and it'll be fun to see how wise my choice was.
Really tempting me into picking up one of (a second one of...) those deeply discounted Cadia Stands boxes I'm seeing on amazon....
So I'm starting with a 1,000 point army because budget and a lot of the people I know and intend to play with, play 1,000 point armies. My current build is to but the christmas box sets, with a 20 cadian shock troupes, a cadian command squad and 2 rogal dorns. Then I plan to finish out the army with a grand strategist tank commander and a prismaris psyker. The tank comander to order the dorns and the prismaris psyker to attach to the shock troupes and command squad for them sweet 4+ invulnerable saves. Then give the command squad the "death mask of what's his name" enhancement and that is 995 points. I got a durable squad of 26 infantry to take points and 3 tanks to obliterate my opponent.
It's a beautiful thing. And you didn't even account for the Christmas box!
I’ve just started a guard army. The first thing I got was a bane blade (go big or go home) I’ve just ordered the Christmas Cadian defence force and a combat patrol which should get me to about 1500ish.
I finally printed out a combat patrol, mostly due to some of the creators I am subbed to made some very cool gobo versions of guard.
I like the list and will be picking it up and play some casual games with it. Could you give a few strategies for this list for a beginner noob thank you for your time
This is very close to my army roster (except I went with basilisks because the models are cool. so I’m pleased I didn’t faff it all up. First time painting/playing 40K since 3rd.

Ive been looking at 2000pt lists and just cutting the number of units in half, then adding/removing stuff as needed, so with this one the command blob cant really be reduced but thats fine, do 10 man squads instead of 20, 1 or 2 each of tanks, artillery, and sentinels, with your choice on loadout. I got a decent list at about 985pts there, probably gonna throw grand strategist on someone for the last stretch and see how it goes at my next game
2 dorns seems strong to me you would still want some cheap armor in the form of chimeras, and i'm a bit of a oddity but i like leman russ eradicators 160pts, the Urban warfare rule allow you to use it's Nova cannon A3+6 S7 AP-1 D2 Blast in engagement range either HB/HF sponsons, lascannon/HF, HS, additionly, when making ranged attacks, this model does not suffer the penalty to its Hit rolls for being within Engagement Range of one or more enemy units it's literally a tank in a knife fight
For a 1000pts Battle Force I take 2x 20 men infantry sqauds with command sqauds, heavy weapons + special weapon and srg wpn to suit. I take a mortor pit, 3x ogryns, scout sentinsls, Basilisk and enhancments for 1 or two Lts. A commissar can be the Warlord or you can upgrade your Lt to Warlord. The idea works with Cadians, Catachans and even Death Korp and you may be able to squeeze in a 3rd unit as an assault/walking fire support force backed up by the Ogryns. Have fun.😊
Old warhammer player, been out of the hobby for years. Have the itch to play and build 40k and Imperial Guard peaks my interest. TBH I'm thinking of just grabbing combat patrol box and slowly paint and go from there. Units look cool, get a little mix of everything. It is a bit discouraging though getting so few points and having to spend $$$ when rules change so frequently from what I'm seeing in youtube videos. Thanks for the videos, helpful to get started or make the decision to start.
Love it. Was building army of Guardsmen for my son. He's lost interest but I'm committed now 😂 Have the Dorn, Solar and Combat Patrol. Was looking at the upcoming Christmas box for 2 more Dorns or would that be overkill?

You have to buy your own unfortunately; I wouldn’t recommend GW paint because it’s expensive and isn’t always great. Any cheap model paint from your local Home Depot or Hobby Lobby works just as well
I’m really worried about all this “free” stuff. I get the feeling that GW’s going to eventually bring back gear costs, and when that happens, all the people who put the absolute best gear on their stuff with all of the upgrades are going to be fucked.

Hi! First of all, thanks for the video! I've been collecting Warhammer miniature and been playing since v9, however I've never touched a guard model in my life.
My idea is to get a mixed army with different regiments because, yknow, in the books it's always "the Imperium deployed 13 regiments of Cadian Shock Troops, 12 Regiments of the Death Korps of Krieg, 5 Regiments from Armageddon, etc.. etc...", so I didn't wanted a full Krieg or full Cadian army.
However, a lot of the less popular regiments are either metal or straight up discontinued, and I wanted to know if you had any recommendation regarding 3rd party sites?

What would any IG player use to replace on Martyn Coopers Beachhead Bash list for the x3 Medusa Artillery and maybe the Kreig unit because it's nearly impossible to get them now a days so was wondering if anyone had any ideas while I'm building my army around the rest of that list as I really like Catachans.

Probably, however that would be another box you would have to buy (for the mortar), so I guess he thought this would be simpler.

The wording for master vox stats the officer of the unit can give orders for 24 inches doesn’t this refer to a single officer meaning either lord solar or the leader of the Cadian command squad?
I completely get this advice and think it is great - just personally tho I don't like the fact that named characters are auto-include. It just feels kinda off from a fluff point of view that for this random skirmish I am modelling that Lord Solar has turned up to oversee it.

Hi, first off I'm new to 40k. I was wondering if you’d have any advice about creating an Airborne Infantry regiment, I was a paratrooper and know about the organization of an airborne infantry brigade(2 infantry battalions, a cavalry battalion, and an artillery battalion in the case of the combat arms element of my former brigade) and was thinking about essentially copying that layout but on a smaller scale. Do you think it might be feasible? I figured I’d try to use sentinels for the cavalry battalion and like 2 squads per infantry battalion. But like I said I’m really new to this. Btw the info I provided on the organization of my former brigade is open to the public and can be looked up in a google search, lol
So at 17:52, I have to comment this, because it is super petty, but it comes up over and over again.
So, born soldiers is a *detachment rule*. Once the codex comes out, it will be one of many options. Voice of Command, is the army rule.
This is absolutely does not matter, as long as therei s only the index detachment. But as more and more factions will get their codexes (spring alone will double what we have this fall/winter), confusing the two will be more of a problem.
And I already encounted it repeatedly that people confuse the two when talking about the factions in a "longer view". And in case of like, Death Guard who got their "good rules" baked into the detachment, or CSM where essentially using a different detachment would be a complete game changer (probably for the worst), these are not exactly minor things to consider.
For the time being, this is a pet peeve, but I feel it genuinely will get quite confusing, if people just assume that the launch detachment rules (necron's +1 to hit, Custodes 4+++ against mortals, latter of which -was- an army rule in 9th) are army rules, once they stop being that. Already saw it with space marines in practice.

I guess you could equip them with the special weapons so you could have flexible loadouts for your infantry squads

@@jorgeparson7764 Ye, or different special weapons like grenade launchers, flamers, etc. Having spare special weapons guys can allow you to swap squad loadouts without magnetizing

Cost effective and army don't go in the same sentence. It's a hyper hobby of building plastic models (toys) for hundreds of dollars. 3d print or have MONEY
I'm going to hate myself and go broke too, but when I do my guard list, I'm doing 100% Krieg. As of 01/04/2024, there are a lot of OOP Krieg models that I want. More specifically, the Grenedier Squad. MajorKill has a 3d print of a Kriegsman on a horse in the style of Lord Solar, so I might get that as a Proxy to stay with the theme.

What kinds of units would you take against SM? Currently can't seem to beat them. With everything being in cover and 3+ saves everywhere, I've had difficulty denting the army without losing far more than them.

@@patykaarplegos6282 woow I don't own a Hellhound, but damn am I planning on it now. Cover has been such a detriment for my shooting that that tank is a definite need. As for Baneblade, I current got a Shadowsword.
How viable is a heavy tank list? I know it wouldn't be super 420% ultra instinct competitive because muh board presence and action monkeys, but could a decent player do well with a 2000pt list that's mostly tanks?

well i started actualy this month with warhammer 40k and took the guard as the start fraction, but i realy have a big problem against my best friend who plays the space marines, because when he gets meele to me my roughriders die instand and then i'm dead, so do you or someone from the community have tips for me or are there some strong units in the guard who can help me with that problem?

demolisher Russ tanks are really good in my opinion to move up. Plus their guns don't have any minuses for shooting in combat. shooting at point blank with a demolisher is better than a power sword and they really can take a beating. It's also worth noting a tank commander version is only 5pts more allowing an order but I pay the 5 pts to shoot on death. (my army includes 2)

Good advice, I am an old warhammer player returning and looking at guard. Goal is 1k eventually, maybe even 500pt near term. Looking at that Combat Patrol box to start.
I am a new astra militarum player. I wanted to have 3 sentinels already before watching. I have a question tho, why not give them the rocket launcher option? It has both options to do lots of damage to a single target or to damage one single target a lot. Am i missing something?
Rocket launchers are unlikely to wound tanks, they're alright at elite killing
Why take a Power Sword on the Cadian Commander? Isn't their Power Fist strictly better? IIRC the Castellan's power sword gets an extra attack than his fist, but the fist still has higher numbers in every other stat.

Does vox caster ability allow CP in addition to the CP generated by lord solar?
What do you mean?
nope, both are within the limit of 1 aditional cp gained, lord solar caps this out on his own.
No, but you can trigger the Vox Caster on your opponent's turn and that way you get it.
@davidabonyi4556 I'm afraid this is incorrect. Outside of the cp you gain every command phase you are given a cap of 1 cp per battle round (not turn). Lord Solar fills this cap meaning vox casters popping on your opponents turn wouldn't get you the extra cp
@@georgesd2167 the rule says outside the cp both players get in the command phase they can't get more than 1/round.
Meaning I can get 2/turn. During my round, in my command phase due to Leo. The second cp I get is during the enemy round. I use a stratagem on a vox caster unit, roll dice and if I'm lucky I get a cp. Or Coteaz's ability can be triggered
Are earthshaker carriages not competitive any more?
The Leman Russ choice is a mistake in my opinion. You should take the demolisher. It is anti armour and anti everything (yes it is swingy). You dont have to fear close combat (managing range is not a new player thing). Demolisher for the win (lc+2xMelta/3xHF).
Is Lord Solar too expensive for a 500pt? I was thinking of taking Creed as warlord
Too expensive for a 500 pt game, definitely a Cadian Castellan you can kitbash with the command squad and/or Creed should be good for your combat patrol game :)

I always thought that a tech priest would be fun for the astra militarum so maybe it could repair my vehicles and tanks. Not sure how they work as far as that goes. I was surprised to learn that a bane blade box was bigger than the box of a chaos knight! 😮
The Lord Bane Blade would be good

@pendargraft321 when I saw the bane blade in box I was so excited. I love tanks. Warhammer 40K should have a world of tanks game where you can pick any of the tanks including a bane blade and just lay waste to xenos and heretics alike.
this is hard for me to say, but I woulndt recomend a new player to invest money on leman russes. We all know how GW is with the scale creep. It might still be good now, but who knows in the future....
I like to watch Evolution documentaries. When 2 species occupy the same ecological niche, eventually one of them goes extinct. The Russ and the Dorn are in direct competition.
I already have 4 of them (3 official ones and one converted), and I dont intend to replace them with two Rogal Dorns at this point, but when the time comes, I might simply pay an older edition or used them as looted vehicles or something for my orks (proxying them as battlewagons or big Trakks)

Guard has some of the best access to proxies of any army. Im personally a fan of wargames atlantic.
Around 4:50 you said something about the lord solar and a cadian command squad on a 10 man squad this would be incorrect because you can only have one leader per 10 so it would have to be a 20 man squad which is possible
Check the wording again.
Infantry squads can now have 2 leader units attached , if one is a command squad.
The 20 man limit has been removed at some point.
@@konradd7567 I see what you mean I'm all sorts of confused now though are 20 count squads gone in general now or they still around I know my app won't update as soon as others and if so wouldn't that be better any way for more dice or should it be kept smaller for a smaller battlefield profile
@MordianGlory cant see how you get lord solar using a master vox. You are not allowed 2 characters to join a unit, and lord solar cant join a command platoon. Dont think that trick works

In 10th ed, which is the current edition, SCOUT sentinels and armored sentinels are not interchangeable. They work in tandem, ying and yang. Every single guard army needs to bring a squad of Scout Sents. GW decided to put a damn near army type rule to the scouts. Daring Recon. Army wide reroll 1's. Forget the indirect buff.
A squad of 3 sentinels will apply Daring recon, doesnt matter if they are in combat, shooting at something else, or if they came on from reserves. Nothing in the ability states having to stay still, shoot, move, anything. Your 3 sentinels get destroyed, ok you were keeping 2cp for reinforcements. Then they come onto the board next MOVEMENT phase, and Daring Recon still goes off cus 18" range. Theres just no excuse to not have your army blasting down 1 or 2 targets with reroll 1's.
If I see a 10th ed list without a squad of 3 scout sents Im genuinely disappointed and uninterested.
How about bringing 2 units of two Scout Sentinels?
Yes 100% this^ if you want to be able to do it to two targets efficiently without skewing to a Sentinel Spam (6+).
