@ 2:00 (sorry to be a smartiepants lol). There are variations of the Chinese language, Mandarin being one of them, which they speak mostly on mainland China. Other variations are Taiwanese and Cantonese (which they speak in Hong Kong).
At Hong Kong Disneyland, for example, they speak both Manarin and Cantonese, which could both be considered "Chinese language". They have different written characters as well as accents. (They also, of course, speak English at all the parks).
I lived in China for 6 months but am not Chinese myself, so if I made any mistakes go ahead and correct me.
No, you got it right. Mandarin is the predominant dialect in China, and I think it’s the most-spoken language in the world. Some Chinese people know Cantonese as well, but it’s not a really huge majority. Cantonese is mainly spoken in Southern China and, like you said, Hong Kong. I’m Chinese and I only know how to speak Mandarin, but in truth, I’m more fluent in Spanish than I am in Mandarin.

Ooh I wanna add that the "dialects" is kinda a misnomer. The different Chinese "dialects" can be worlds apart, or have a dialect in a dialect. It can be as similar as Spanish vs Portuguese or as different as Spanish and Italian. A different Chinese dialect is not the same as a regional accent. The reason why ppl think that all Chinese dialects are the same is because of the unified writing system, but....no.

Perfectly right. Mandarin is the primary spoken language of China and the new, simplified version which has become the Chinese national language under the People's Republic is the one usually referred to as Chinese. Although they still have diverse languages because "Chinese" throws many regional ethnic groups into one which still exist across the nation.

Chinese is the language Chinese people speak and Mandarin is a dialect. You're right most people speak Mandarin. I speak Cantonese which is another dialect. I would say that I speak Chinese generally but if asked specifically I would say I speak Cantonese. Dialects are kinda like different accents but like different languages at the same time because different dialects sound so different you have to learn different dialects separately.
P.s. I hope my explanation isn't too confusing

Little tip that might be useful, make sure you have a local guide or go with a friend who is fluent in Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese, depends which part of China you go to), as in most part it's rare to meet anyone who speaks English.
I'm Chinese Indonesian (but don't speak any Chinese at all, hence the problem when I went there. People expect me to understand, which turns to be nothing for me. Lol) so I totally relied on translators' note, few basic survival words and gestures.

It’s pretty much explained by other people already! Mandarin and Cantonese are the two main dialects within the Chinese language. Chinese is mostly refer to the written language, but people use it to refer to speaking language as well. The calligraphy that you got is the Chinese characters of Brian 布莱恩 Hope that helps!

A moment of silence for the banana's
I appreciate the fact that Disney realized that Lunar New Year isn't exclusively a Chinese festivity (like many seem to think) and included other countries that also celebrate it even though China was the main focus (which makes since they have Mulan). Also wanted to point out that your zodiac sign isn't necessarily based only on your birth year as the date of the Lunar New Year varies between late January and mid-February each year which means if you're in January or early February, you're most likely the "previous" year's sign. For example someone born today (February 9, 2018) would still be considered a rooster because the next Lunar Year starts on Feb 16.

Mandarin is one of the parts of Chinese most widely spoken. There is also Cantonese, Taiwanese, and other dialects.

To answer the Chinese vs. Mandarin, Chinese is the broad language and Mandarin is a specific dialect along with Cantonese, Taiwanese, etc. Mandarin is the dialect that all of China (even Hong Kong) will have to learn so the country can actually talk to each other. There’s even dialects of Mandarin like northern and southern (of the Yangtze River/长江河) and more.
For English, it’s like English=Chinese and US English=Mandarin (not saying that US is the dominant English, just for the point), and a strong southern vs Bay Area accents are the sub-accents of Mandarin.

Hey Brian! Wanna comment to help out :) But in the Chinese language, the two main ones are Mandarin and Cantonese. You could consider these as dialects, but Mandarin is the one that is most spoken especially on the mainland while Cantonese is mostly heard in Hong Kong. But your names were written in Chinese :) Super awesome that you filmed this! Makes me super jelly.

My boyfriend who is originally Chinese is from part of the country where Mandarin nor Cantonese is spoken (I forget the name of the dialect, but I know it starts with an F based on the area), but yes, these two are the most spoken in China
Dialects Cantonese hokkien Beijing dialect wuhan dialect and a while lot more each province has their own 34 of them if I'm not wrong

Also Mandarin is a dialect of Chinese, it's only slightly different, and more spoken in Taiwan, rather than Mainland China.

Okay just watching that part, I HAVE to inform.
I lived in Hong Kong for over a year, so this is how I know. Chinese is an overall non-specific language. Mandarin is a TYPE of Chinese. Chinese includes Mandarin, Cantonese, Hakawa, etc. There are tons of different forms of Chinese. The characters are just Chinese, but how the characters are read/how they're pronounced depends on the specific language.
This may have already been answered, but in case it hasn't, there ya go! =)
