When I was in Saudi for Umrah I found their actual cities really nice. Jeddah was genuinely beautiful. I really don’t understand why they are forgoing their established culture to make cities that just look like every single American suburb but somehow even more artificial and dull.

It's not actually a bad idea. With a bit of tweaking, it could be worth a try, on a small scale. A long, straight city would be an excellent candidate for magnetic trains/trams, which would need very little energy because momentum would only be interrupted when they were stopping. If they put solar panels on swivels so that the follow the sun and built the houses underneath them, they would be shaded suring the hot part of the day. If they replaced the high mirrors with a half-mile band of trees and used filtered sea water to keep them green, it would improve the quality of the soil over time and bring new life to the desert.
It is a horrendous idea, think of all the stops that would make travelling take ages. Better off with a Golden Rectangle with Golden Spirals.

Its not for everybody. Have a look at some of the middle east cities they built. Not to everyones taste but works for the climate they live in. They look after their own people. I studied architecture for 5 years but even if you aren't an architect, u can see it's not really a feasible idea. No city starts off as a line. It's a dot that expands by radiating outwards based on the extent of population growth & demand. Also because it''s basically very narrow, tall & covered with glass, it get's very dark & hot, especially because of how cramped it would be, as it's half a running track wide & 500 meters talls. It's basically a long narrow road of buildings that are taller than the Eiffel tower. The line was cut from 170 km in length to 2.4 km. Diriiyah is much nicer, it has character & it has a proven record of being more feasible & practical. Usually the way to handle this is by building extensions of a city
