Hey guys cool old house lots of work. I have a similar problem. Got to get under a blocked up old house. I've given it much thought. Cut holes in the floors where YOU need to work it will make it easier to make these openings and drop down block it up save the pieces to put back when done. Framing back to existing floor joists. But knowing tubers (commenters) some one won't adgree. Save all that crawling time

The original cabin of our old house was built in 1872 , James Marshall (finder of gold in the American River in 1849, starting the California gold rush) built the fireplace. The rest of the house was added around this well built cabin on three sides in the early 1950's. The underside is open and on stone pillars just like yours, even the people that did the add on followed the same procedure. We bought the house and property in 1971. My now husband of 30 years is a carpenter, he went under the house many years ago and stapled insulation on the underside. It made the house much warmer. To this day we only use fireplace heat. I've been here 50 years, and I have always loved my old home.

Up under that house is an excellent example of country farm living. The old yard dogs would get a hold of trash or pieces of animals and carry them up under the floor. Even raccoons etc...would take off with garbage or whatever and run under an old raised house. I remember as a kid I would go under the old houses we lived in and play. I would watch my momma legs walk around the house hollering for me. I would sit there quiet and see if she would look under the house to see if I was there. 😌 I would see stuff everywhere. I asked why stuff was under an old house one time in a box and momma said that people would store things under there because it was cool. I grew up in Florida so the coolest spot to play was under the house. ✌

The mortar is called simply, lime mortar. It is one of the oldest forms of mortar and best used for parging stone walls. Concrete or mortar made with portland cement can't breathe and doesn't permit wet stone or concrete block from drying out, whereas lime mortar is porous. If you look carefully at old European buildings especially castle interiors they are plastered or parged with lime mortar. Ir wet stone can't dry out it is susceptible you freeze thaw and failure. Hope this helps or you find it useful. Love both channels by the way. Keep up the good work. In way of a ps...My family owns property in rural Indiana County in southwestern PA. Off in the woods is an old family cemetery forgotten and long abandoned from 1863. A Mother and five children all died within a month of each other with the Mother dying last. The Father was off in the war and the neighbors buried them all behind the old cabin as they passed and marked them all with simple wood coffins. When the Father came home from the war, he had no idea that his entire family had died and he bought tombstones for them all. We have taken it upon ourselves to clean it up and try to maintain it. Cheers to you all and God Bless.

She was playing one day and went up under the chicken house to hide, and found a complete skeleton of what turned out to be a Confederate soldier. He apparently had crawled under the same chicken house , after the battle of Malvern Hill, to die of his wounds. She had his belt buckle for years. They did rebury this soldier in a nearby cemetery. This is how this story was told to me back in the 1980s. The fact that it was the same chicken house just amazed me!

Those cross braces between the joists are there to distribute the deflection of the joist. When you step on one joist, it spreads the "bounce" from a single joist to the joists around it and makes the floor less springy. A lot of times they're removed for plumbing or duct work but they should be replaced whenever possible.

I have a few of those jars and also some bicentennial Folgers coffee jars my granny got. I'd say a lot of that garbage was from dogs dragging it under the house. Have seen that many times. The old bottle neck was cool. Get done with your work under there before spring if you can. Copperheads love being under houses. You'll also get a lot of spiders, some that could be harmful such as black widows and brown recluses. Of course being a southern boy you know all that. Cave crickets = fish bait. lol Enjoying the series. Can't wait until you start working on the inside.

Robert, once you clear off the land around the house from all the wisteria and brush, i think we'd like to see a video of you metal detecting. You might find some things you'd never know were there like old axe head, coins, cans, etc.

Our house was built in 1983 and as we have remodeled we have found coins dated 1982 and 1983 under wall supports and under drywall walls. Now as we replace flooring and such we put coins under the wood and vanities. A very cool tradition.

Only way I could watch this was knowing you had to edit and post, so, you made it out alive! All I thought about was, both of you, under there, probably your phones in your back pockets, and no one outside that even would know you were under there...I didn't watch the episode when you squeezed up into the attic somewhere! God bless you, and happy new year!

The cross bracing is used to keep the joist from twisting. But they would not be used where the joist were 4x6 like the old section. When they used 2x6, 2x8,2x10 or 2x12 they bad to brace to keep them from twisting

  • @mikjary1909

The small boards between the floor joists is "bridging." They distribute the force between joists to stiffen the floor. They help during new construction to eliminate joist warpage, but I think you're well past that time frame. In order to measure twice and cut once, you need a pencil and tape measure. 🤞

They are called camel crickets. The boards between the joists are called bridges to help to keep floor from sagging and moving when you are walking on them.

Coins must have fallen out of the children's pockets when they'd go under there to play hide and seek and stuff. Change left over from the soda fountain at the drug store in the center of town. Indian head pennies, Liberty head nickels, and Barber dimes. Maybe some earlier coins. Buffalo nickels and Mercury dimes, too. You'll need a metal detector to find them.

Hi Robert, Daniel and crew! I agree that a dog probably took that jaw bone piece under the house but it is creepy! It is too small for a horse though unless it was a tiny pony foal. Teeth are worn too suggesting age. You could take it to a college or museum to identify it but I'm guessing that somebody was outside dressing a deer and Ole Bullitt scarfed himself up a good piece of trash!
