  • Should the U.S. military be building an army that is technologically smart, small and hyper-effective, or should it be pumping out 20th century bullets, artillery and tanks in overwhelming numbers? In his new article "Battlefield: Star Wars vs. Mad Max," Hudson Senior Fellow Michael Doran argues that the wars in Ukraine and Gaza should demonstrate to Israel and the U.S. that contrary to popular opinion modern wars are just as slow, big and resource heavy as they've ever been. A hybrid Mad Max style industrial base will be needed to win modern wars.

Thought provoking interview and topic; I like that the argument is tailored to speak to a mass audience to explain a complex topic which is what is needed now most of all. Also, the nerd in me is piqued since Star Wars from the start was about a powerful technologically advanced Empire using an expensive wonder weapon in order to control an immense space through fear, deterrence. And then the wonder weapon is destroyed which is a disastrous blow to that Empire. Some of the Empire’s leaders were against putting all their resources into this effort, like Darth Vader, and Admiral Thrawn argued for a bigger traditional Navy with enough ships and weapons. Those dissenting leaders were proved correct.
