  • This is a really nice long point sharpener that is good for drawing away from your home/studio or in class! It's portable, and gets a really sharp point- unlike most travel or handheld sharpeners. Also, it has replacement blades that you can buy, for when the blades get dull! Thanks so much, Tony, for sharing this tool recommendation with me!
    Links to purchase are below:
    this one has the small sharpener set for mechanical pencils as well as replacement blades included:

    Thanks for being the only person on TH-cam to use this sharpener correctly. Everyone else stops step 1 as soon as the point is visible in the stop area and not until the sharpener stops shaving by itself lol.

    I recently bought one of these KUM sharpeners and never know about two replacement blades inside. So cool.

      I really like this sharpener for that reason and you can buy replacement blades, too. Thanks so much for watching and commenting on so many videos! I really appreciate it.

      And as a previous youtuber commented, I myself, wasn't using it correcty until I saw your video. Now my pencils are coming out nicely sharpened, long and well pointed. 👍😊

      Glad I was not the only one , recently purchased one and complained there was no spare blades, quickly apologised and owned up as to having a senior moment. 😀😀😀😀

    I used to have the Berol sharpener that could be screwed down to the desk.

    The two blades at the bottom aren’t replacemts they are for 2.0mm mechanical pencil lead. The two holes on the sides marked red and white are the entry points for such lead.

      Yep! And the sharpener comes with 2 replacement blades for wood pencils, too. So 6 blades in all. :) I read this, 2 years later - thanks for watching!

    Thank you for a lovely and informative channel.
    KUM also makes the 'Masterpiece' which makes a lead that is just a little longer (a lethal 15° point as opposed to 'just' 17° for the automatic). Also, on the Masterpiece you can take off the rear guard so the first part of the sharpener can expose as much of the graphite core as you want (you can then finish it off with sandpaper or whatever you like to use).

    First thing is, am in love with that point of your Xacto sharpener! Now I can fully appreciate why you like it so much. My old Boston Champion sharpener doesn’t perform as well. Gotta find me one, can you point me in the right direction?
    Secondly, for some odd reason (since I happen to own many different mechanical pencils and leadholders), I too prefer drawing with a wooden pencil. There is something truly gratifying when they reach the tiny stub stage!
    Third, there is a design flaw in that KUM sharpener, after a while it simply stops working on the second step. Mine did and while looking for answers on why this happened, I came across many other people that suffered the same. BTW the lead sharpener is not two stage, one side is meant for 2mm leadholders, while the other is meant for 3.2mm leads.
    As always, great video!

      The point on the xacto is the best! And agreed, wood pencils are the best! I'll be on the lookout for problems with the KUM sharpener, too. I've seen the Xacto sharpeners at walmart during back-to-school shopping for $6, but you can also get them on Amazon for $13 amzn.to/2HOdXB7

    There is also the *KUM* Masterpiece. It gives a 26mm (2.6cm) long point and is Hand-Made in Germany

      My problem with this one is it doesn't have a container for shavings, which is fine for adults, but since I teach 20+ private lessons to kids a week- they are messy and wouldn't always think to use this over a trash can and it would make for a lot of cleanup. Plus, the unprotected sharpeners leave a lot of graphite dust on our hands, which then can smudge on our drawings... so I have to stick with this one over the Masterpiece! But thanks for sharing it with me, I'm always on the hunt for new tools!

    • @somehumanbeing4018
      @somehumanbeing4018 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lzmstudio It's worth the spend tho. i agree w/you about the shavings. I am a student in high school and the classrooms in my school don't have garbage cans, so if i had to pick, i would choose the Kum AS2

    ... also looks like the blackwing sharpener... maybe same product with varying brand-labels?? In any case, yes, it's sooooo creamy-buttery-smoooooth and makes a beautifully long and sharp-pointed tip -
    ... it changed my whole drawing practice... I hardly draw anymore... just sit there sharpen pencils all day... Ha ! :-)

      peter quenter Hahaha! Understandable, I pretty much did the same thing when she informed me about the Xacto sharpener. Maybe later on I’ll try this one too.

    • @Lzmstudio
      @Lzmstudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha! If only being a paid professional pencil sharpener was a job- sign me up! Yep, the Blackwing sharpener is produced by the same brand, but I think costs a little more because of the association with Blackwing. The Blackwing history is pretty cool. A client who was a journalist and Press Secretary for an awesomely outspoken female governor introduced me to the Blackwing pencils. I think it was the John Steinbeck ties that got him to splurge. palominobrands.com/blackwing-pencil-story/

    A good alternative would be either a KUM Masterpiece or a DUX adjustable brass pencil sharpener.

    • @Lzmstudio
      @Lzmstudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer sharpeners with helical blades or more than one blade and a case to contain the shavings. The one blade sharpeners dull too quickly in my experience, and I'm not a fan of the mess when there isn't a receptacle attached. But I looked those 2 up, and the points look nice and long. If it weren't for the other features, I'd consider them.

    • @Addwrite
      @Addwrite 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see your point (no pun intended). Helical sharpeners are less messy and are best suited to heavy duty use. I think the sharpeners that I suggested are better looking, though.

    • @Lzmstudio
      @Lzmstudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I use my pencils so much with so many students in the studio I have to go for function over form. I appreciate a beautiful sharpener, but they often are as useful as a sculpture ;) Pretty to look at while it sits there collecting dust!

    • @Addwrite
      @Addwrite 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quite so. I have a collection of fountain pens - all of which I adore - but, somehow, they tend to remain in their storage case: maybe a triumph of aesthetics over function! Love your vids.

    • @Lzmstudio
      @Lzmstudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Darryl Foster haha! I bought my first fountain pen in a long time this summer. Used it once. Now it’s clogged and I need to learn how to clean it😭 some functional stuff is really worth it over the romance of yore- even though I love the look of fountain pen writing. Sigh.

    How about double stick tape on a small piece of wood veneer not much bigger than your sharpener base? Actually I'll be trying it myself. My desk is oak.

    • @Lzmstudio
      @Lzmstudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      for the xacto sharpener to suction? not sure double stick tape will be strong enough, as the crank handle is pretty tough. worth a try though maybe?

  • @elvatoloco6105
    @elvatoloco6105 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Here’s my question LZM, is it better than the XACTO though in your opinion?

    • @Lzmstudio
      @Lzmstudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a tough question! I use the Xacto in the studio every day. Every once in a while I have a pencil that keeps breaking in the Xacto (which is usually a softer pencil, and likely a lesser quality brand, so the problem lies with the pencil rather than the sharpener) and I am able to get it to sharpen in the Long Point handheld sharpener, because there is less torque on the lead with the Long Point. Also, the point that the Long Point sharpens to IS DEFINITELY sharper, so occasionally, I'll go to the Long Point just for the teeny tiny point (like when I'm drawing animal hair in detail). What I love about the Xacto, though, is that it sharpens for years, no dulling of the blades. And I have only used the blades in the long point for five months (and they are still sharpening, but I only use it maybe 5-10 times a week) so I don't know if they will last as long as the Xacto will. I'm guessing they won't, but thankfully you can replace the blades... but might not be as cost-effective as the Xacto, overall. All of this is to say, I love having them both, for different purposes. Xacto for everyday. Long Point for travel, breakers and teeny points.

      LZM Studio Thank you for the reply. And thank you for informing me about the Xacto sharpener. Just like you I love my pencils always sharp and pointy I went to buy one when I saw your video on it and man do I love it! Best pencil sharpener I’ve had so far.

    • @Lzmstudio
      @Lzmstudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is so awesome to know other people geek out about their pencil sharpeners, like me! Hahaha. I had a friend say when I first started my channel "I watched the one on the pencil sharpener. It was, um, specific..." Some people just won't understand the life changes a good sharpener will make!!!!! :)

      @elvatoloco6105 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      LZM Studio Yes. Hehe. You should’ve seen me I was looking for every Pencil in my room and all around the house to just pretty much just sharpen pencils for the first 3 days when I got it. Haha. Sharpens so nice! Again thanks for introducing me the Xacto and love your artwork as well.

    CAUTION! The KUM is a great sharpener, however the grey plastic is quite cheap and prone to cracking..be warned!

    • @Lzmstudio
      @Lzmstudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SO funny - my sharpener lid just broke off last week. It still closes, but isn't sealed as well now, so fine particles of graphite are more likely to leak out into my travel pencil case. Agreed- if the plastic were more solid it would be a better product!

  • @antquinonez
    @antquinonez 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had one of these and the plastic hinged cover snapped off and then the blade became dull. I replaced the blade but it never sharpened well after that, so it ended up in the garbage.

    • @Lzmstudio
      @Lzmstudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My plastic cover hinge broke too! I replaced the blades though and it still sharpens well. Sorry you had a bad experience with this brand. :/

    • @andrejdamis7263
      @andrejdamis7263 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was disappointed by the cheapness of the plastic. Not the case, mind you, but the sharpener itself. Once the blades get replaced, you realise that the screw holes are stripped and you can't get it to fit as it should. Sucks, as it's otherwise a nice design, it's just that the materials used make it seem like a disposable item.

    • @Lzmstudio
      @Lzmstudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrej Damiš yeah my plastic lid snapped off. But I haven’t had the stripped screw holes- that would be really frustrating. At least we didn’t pay for the more expensive black wing version of this... unless it has any better quality?

    • @andrejdamis7263
      @andrejdamis7263 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lzmstudio I think the only difference with the BW edition is the logo on it. And apparently the price. From the pictures it seem like the exact same sharpener.
      I kinda miss it, since it worked really nice with certain pens, but then again it seemed to just want to brake others. Maybe some day I'll get the metal version, since I already have two replacement blades that aren't compatible with the rest of the sharpeners I can get my hands on... That is, when/if I get into the position where spending 20+€+postage on a pencil sharpener won't seem like a frivolous thing to do.

    • @Lzmstudio
      @Lzmstudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrej Damiš I entirely agree- bw version just seems to have added cost. And also not spending that much on frivolous stuff either!
